Linda Copeland

Assistant Professor
University of California
USA
Biography

Dr. Linda Copeland received her M.D degree from the University of California Davis School of Medicine during the period of 1975 to 1979. She is board-certified in Developmental Behavioral Pediatrics. Since August of 2012 she has been working as an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics through the University of California San Francisco-Fresno Pediatric Residency Program. She previously worked with administrative responsibilities at Alta California Regional Center (ACRC), a non-profit agency serving individuals with developmental disabilities in Sacramento, California from 1988 until 1994, being Medical Director during 1993-1994. She worked for Kaiser Permanente, a large Health Maintenance Organization, from 1996 until 2012 where she evaluated, diagnosed and treated many children with developmental conditions. She participated in the creation and operations of the second Kaiser Autism Spectrum Disorders Clinic in Northern California. Her research has included the study of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorders (conducting a national survey of pediatric practices in diagnosing and treating ADHD), brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Magnetic Spectroscopy studies on children with autism and/or Fragile X syndrome as well as on adults with panic disorder and a scientific literature review of biochemical pathways that may relate to autism risk from air pollutants. She contributed to several studies, including a Kaiser study that showed no increased risk of autism due to prenatal ultrasound tests and a single subject case design study that showed lack of efficacy of an SSRI medication in treating stereotypic behavior in a child with autism. She completed requirements to earn a Board Certification in Behavior Analysis (BCBA) in 2009. Based on her academic excellence in medical school training, her fellowship training in Developmental Disabilities at the University of Iowa and her research and her advocacy, she has received several awards and honors, such as: Upjohn Award for Outstanding Clinical Proficiency and Alpha Omega Alpha as a medical student and the 2002 Award for Excellence in Services for Young Children with Autism from FEAT(Families for Early Autism Treatment) of Sacramento. She has authored or co-authored several research articles and scientific poster presentations. She is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Society for Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics and the California Association of Behavior Analysts.
