Biography

Dr. Powell is a leading expert in understanding autism and related disorders using novel genetic animal models for which he received an Autism Young Investigator Award in 2007. His recent work is directed at studying synaptic genes that cause autism including neuroligins, neurexins, Shank3, & PTEN to name a few. Dr. Powell’s work has identified novel mechanisms of brain dysfunction and novel potential therapeutic targets in animal models of autism.  His laboratory efforts combine cutting edge molecular biology, biochemistry, neuronal morphology, brain slice electrophysiology, and behavioral characterization to identify how autism-associated mutations lead to brain dysfunction and to discover novel ways to treat these functional differences.
MD/PhD 1994/1997 Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX
Neurology Residency and Chief Resident UCSF 1998-2001, San Francisco, CA
Postdoctoral Fellowship with Dr. Eric Nestler at UT Southwestern Medical Center
Currently Associate Professor with Tenure of Neurology and Psychiatry at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, TX
