Steven J Garlow MD, PhD is Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Emory University School of Medicine and is also the Chief of Psychiatry at Emory University Hospital. Dr. Garlow received his MD from the University of Pittsburgh and his PhD in Molecular Biology from Carnegie-Mellon University. He received his psychiatry training at Stanford University Schoolâ¨of Medicine and completed his neuroscience fellowship at Stanford in the Nancy Pritzker Laboratory of Molecular Neurobiology. Dr. Garlow has participated in basic neurosciences research as Director of the Laboratory of Molecular Neurobiology and clinical research through various clinical services. He is the senior psychiatrist in the Deep Brain Stimulation for Treatment Resistant Depression program at Emory. He has been the Principal Investigator and Co investigator on a variety of basic and clinical neurosciences research projects. His current research includes understanding risk for completed suicide especially genetic risk, novel screening methods for people at risk for suicide (AFSP Interactive Screening Project), impact of addiction on suicide risk and the biology and treatment of mood disorders. Dr. Garlow has published articles on topics including the basic regulation of expression of serotonin receptors in the brain, factors that predict suicide risk, consequences of policy changes on outcome of psychiatric patients, and augmentation strategies for treatment-resistant depression and deep brain stimulation for TRD.
