James Fotouhi – a research analyst at BlueTech Research - will join water experts from around the world at the Canadian Water Summit in June 2015. Mr Fotouhi, who is a global expert in emerging technologies and investment, has been invited to moderate a panel on the subject of the water-energy nexus.
The Energy of Water–Exploring Nexus Opportunities is the theme of the summit, which takes place in Vancouver on 25 June and is the pre-eminent water conference in Canada.
Mr Fotouhi, who is from California but is based in Canada, is an analyst who specializes in the use and reuse of water and wastewater in the oil and gas industry, particularly in relation to unconventional fossil fuels.
He said: “Water is critical to oil and gas production. You need water to produce oil and gas and you also end up with a lot of wastewater which you need to treat.”
According to the latest research from BlueTech the US oil and gas industry uses 22 bn barrels of water each year. A barrel is 6.29 cubic meters or 40 gallons.
The Canadian Water Summit is a great opportunity for representatives of governments, non-governmental organizations, industrial users, water companies and water technology experts to share their knowledge and to discuss ways of using water more efficiently.
Mr Fotouhi said there were tremendous opportunities for companies involved in oil and gas to reassess the way they currently use water.
“It is a great time to be in the wastewater reuse industry. The challenge is to find new and safe ways to reuse water and there is a lot of opportunity for using new technologies in these areas.”
“Water is fundamental to how we function as a society and how we maintain our relationship with the environment. There is also a huge amount of technological innovation going on in the industry, both in terms of water and wastewater treatment, which also makes it an exciting industry to be involved in.”
