Biography :

Ming Pei is an Associate Professor and a Director of Stem Cell and Tissue Engineering Laboratory in the Department of Orthopaedics, West Virginia University. He also serves as an Adjunct Professor in Exercise Physiology and Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering at the West Virginia University. He spent three years as a Postdoctoral Associate in Harvard – M.I.T. Division of Health Sciences and Technology (HST) focusing on Bioreactor and Cartilage Tissue Engineering Projects, and three years as a Research Fellow in Department of Orthopaedics, Brown University focusing on Stem Cell Projects. He received his MD from Xuzhou Medical College, China in 1991, MS from Fudan University, China in 1996, and PhD from Beijing University, China in 1999. He is an Active Member of Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS, since 2002), Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society (TERMIS, since 2002), and Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI, since 2006). He serves as a reviewer for 17 journals and 6 grant agencies. He also serves as a reviewer for Annual ORS meeting abstract. He has 43 papers published in peer-review journals and more than 55 abstracts accepted for conference presentation.

Biography :

D.A. Garzón-Alvarado is a Full Professor of Mechanical and biomedical Engineering in the Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering, National University of Colombia, Colombia since 2000. He graduated (with honours) with a degree of Mechanical Engineering from the National University of Colombia (UNAL) in 1998. He obtained his PhD in Computational Mechanics from the University of Zaragoza in 2007. From 2000 to 2006 he was an Assistant Professor at UNAL. In 2011, he got the Full professorship at the UNAL, teaching in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, where he is Head Professor of the Mathematical Modeling and Numerical Methods Research Group GNUM. His present research is in computational biomechanics, computational biological systems, mechanobiology and numerical methods.

Arvind Chhabra is an Assistant Professor at Department of Medicine and Stem Cell Institute of University of Connecticut Health Center. He has completed his postdoctoral research in 2007 from Department of Medicine, University of Connecticut Health Center before which he attained his doctoral degree from Department of Microbiology of Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI) located at Lucknow, India in 2001.

His research work is aimed at developing an effective immune based cancer therapy. Since most human tumor antigens identified are "self-antigens", and most human tumors are MHC class I positive, but MHC class II negative, the generation of a potent anti-tumor immune response faces many inherent constraints. Among these include, an extremely low precursor frequency of antitumor T cells in most cancer patients, and the lack of an effective method to engage CD4 T cells in tumor immunity, especially in an antigen specific manner. They have developed multiple approach to effectively address these limitation, utilizing the human melanoma associated antigens as model tumor antigens. He have published his findings in prominent peer-review journals and research work has earned him several awards at international cancer immunotherapy meetings. In addition to his work on human melanoma, ongoing research efforts in his laboratory are aimed at extending his expertise to the human breast cancer model and also to utilize the human pluripotent stem cells [hPS, i.e. human embryonic stem cells (hES) and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS)] for developing patient specific cancer immunotherapy approaches through TCR engineering approach.

Dr. Massimo Conese is currently an Associate Professor at the Department of Biomedical Sciences, University of Foggia, Italy. Dr. Conese obtained his M.D. degree in 1987 and Specialization in Oncology in 1990 from the University of Bari, Italy (field of interest; macrophages and the control of coagulation in health and disease), and his Ph.D. in Cellular and Molecular Biology and Pathology in 1995 from the Second University Medical School, Naples, Italy (field of interest: role of the urokinase/urokinase receptor in pericellular fibrinolysis and cell migration/differentiation). During the Ph.D. program, he spent one year and half in the Institute of Microbiology, Copenhagen, Denmark. Dr. Conese performed postdoctoral research as Research Assistant at the Telethon Institute for Gene Therapy, DIBIT, H. S. Raffaele Scientific Institute, Milan, Italy (1997-2001) and was appointed Group Leader of the Institute for Experimental Treatment of Cystic Fibrosis in the same Institute (2001-2007).

Biography :

I got my Ph. D. from Shandong Normal University and Chinese Academy of Sciences, China, majoring on the study of mouse pronuclear exchange and nuclear transfer in 2005. Then, I worked as a Postdoc Fellow at the Department of Cell and Systems Biology (2005-2007), and then moved to the Centre for Research in Neurodegenerative Diseases as a Research Technician II (2008-2012), University of Toronto, Canada. During this period, my research mainly focused on Parkinson disease, which included the differentiation of neural stem cells into dopamine neurons, and the molecular mechanism of Parkinson disease. Particularly, I developed a new method, designated as “Combinatorial Strategy” to clone different plasmid vectors with various clone sites, and also optimized the protocols of lentiviral transduction to establish stable transgene cell lines efficiently. Now, I am a Research Associate (Research Technician II) at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard University.

Biography :

Youming Zhang qualified in Medicine from Tongji Medical College. He had further clinical and research training and obtained a Master degree in Medicine from Peking Union Medical College. He was a Clinical Research Fellow in Paediatrics at Beijing Children’s Hospital before he went to the University of Oxford to study for a DPhil. He focused his research in the field of asthma genetics at Oxford Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics.  After completing his DPhil study, he continued his research at Oxford. He was then appointed as a Research Council UK Fellow at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London where he is currently a Lecturer in Respiratory Genomics. My research focuses on three signaling pathways that emanate from the ER that orchestrate survival and death responses. More recently, our studies have discovered that ER protein misfolding leads to oxidative stress, calcium mobilization, and inflammatory responses. These findings are central to the defect in intestinal epithelial cells that encounter a necessity to increase protein secretion to produce antimicrobial peptides.

Shuji Ogino, MD, PhD, MS (Epidemiology), is Associate Professor of Pathology at Harvard Medical School, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women′s Hospital, and Associate Professor (Epidemiology) at Harvard School of Public Health.  Dr. Ogino′s research focuses on molecular pathological epidemiology (MPE), epigenetics, and colorectal cancer and neoplasias.  Dr. Ogino established the interdisciplinary science "Molecular Pathological Epidemiology" (MPE) (Ogino et al. J Natl Cancer Inst 2010; Gut 2011; Nat Rev Clin Oncol 2011; Int J Epidemiol 2012; Am J Epidemiol 2012; etc.) as the first MPEist (MPE\\ist, MPE-ist).  The MPE field deciphers diseases at both the molecular and population levels and contributes to personalized medicine and personalized prevention.  Dr. Ogino created various novel paradigms, concepts and theorems, including the "Colorectal Continuum" theory (Yamauchi, Morikawa et al. Gut 2012; Yamauchi, Lochhead, et al. Gut 2012); "Unique Tumor Principle" (Ogino et al. Expert Rev Mol Diagn 2012; Int J Epidemiol 2012); and "GWAS-MPE Approach" for the post-GWAS (genome-wide association study) era (Ogino et al. Gut 2011).  Analogous to systems biology, MPE takes a holistic approach to incorporate diverse intersecting pathways and themes (such as epigenetics, genomics, energetics, inflammation, immunity, microbiome, microbiota, etc.) into integrated analysis of etiologies, evolution and progression of cancers as well as all other human diseases.  Dr. Ogino initiated the “MPE Method Working Group (MMWG)” and the “STROBE-MPE Initiative” in order to standardize methods in MPE research worldwide.  Dr. Ogino has published 128 original papers (as of July 2012; 75% of which he is the first or last author) in a variety of high-profile journals (including Nature, Nat Genet, NEJM, JAMA, J Clin Oncol, J Natl Cancer Inst, Genome Res, Gastroenterology, Gut, etc.).  Dr. Ogino′s work has been quoted over 5000 times in the past 5 years (since 2007).  Dr. Ogino has served in NIH Study Sections, and for other grant agencies.  Dr. Ogino conducted peer review for 80 journals (including NEJM, Nature series, Lancet, JAMA, etc) and has been an editorial board member for over 15 journals.  Dr. Ogino has served as a member of numerous national and international committees in molecular medicine, pathology and cancer societies (including AMP, CAP, USCAP, NCCN, ACS, CLSI, etc.).  Dr. Ogino received his MD and PhD from the University of Tokyo, and MS degree (in Epidemiology) from the Harvard School of Public Health.  As a result of his unique and pioneering work in establishing and developing MPE, Dr. Ogino received the prestigious Ramzi Cotran Young Investigator Award in 2011 from United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology (USCAP).

Dr. Victor V. Levenson is an Associate Professor at Rush University Medical Center (Chicago, IL). Dr. Levenson received his MD from the 2nd Moscow State Medical Institute and his PhD in cellular and molecular biology from the Institute of Molecular Biology (Moscow, USSR). He has been on faculty at University of Illinois at Chicago and Northwestern University (Chicago, IL). Dr. Levenson’s work in DNA methylation-based biomarkers has been recognized in peer-reviewed papers, reviews, and book chapters. Ziad W Jaradat holds an MSc and PhD Degrees in Microbiology and Biotechnology from the University of Manitoba, Canada with an outstanding record. In September 2004, he joined the Jordan University of Science and Technology with a major appointment in the Departments of Applied Biology and the Department of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering and co-appointment with the Department of Nutrition and Food Science. Since his appointment at JUST, he was actively involved in research, he have obtained several grants from local and international granting agencies. In Sept 2009 he was promoted to Associate professor. Since July 2007, he is working in Institute of Applied Technology, UAE as head of Academic Affairs. My group uses human pluripotent stem cells, particularly induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells, with the goals of studying normal and abnormal hematopoiesis and developing new technologies towards the use of iPS cells in cell therapies. We have developed new tools to generate transgene-free human iPS cells and to genetically engineer them in safe harbor sites in the human genome. We are harnessing these technologies to better understand the genetic basis of myelodysplastic syndromes and to advance iPS cell research towards translation to the clinic. We are using reprogramming of patientderived hematopoietic cells and genetic engineering of normal human pluripotent stem cells to develop new models of dysplastic hematopoiesis. We are also developing new approaches to generate safer genetically modified iPS cells for cell therapies.

Human body is composed of a variety of cell types with different functions. All of these cells, however, have the same genetic materials. Depending on actively expressed genes, cells acquire their fate in the developmental process. Forced expression of a given sets of genes reprogram cells to become the cell type of interest. Dr. Park have shown that the overexpression of genes important for pluripotent stem cells convert somatic cells to become induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells that have similar features of embryonic stem cells. The iPS cells provide unprecedented resources for cell replacement therapy and for developing platforms for drug discovery. Dr. Park’s lab investigates the molecular and epigenetic mechanism of reprogramming and the utility of iPS cells for human diseases.

Identification of angiogenic molecules and their mechanisms underlying tumor growth, vessel formation, and metastasis. Tumor angiogenesis, the new vasculature formation from pre-existing blood vessels, is a fundamental process required for tumor growth, and is initially triggered by angiogenic factors that are mainly derived from tumor cells and tumorassociated stroma cells, such as growth factors VEGF and bFGF. Those angiogenic molecules specifically bind to membrane tyrosine kinase receptors to induce intracellular angiogenic signaling cascades in endothelial cells, a major component of the blood vasculature. We recently have discovered that a secreted glycoprotein referred to as YKL-40 has the ability to promote tumor vascular endothelial cell angiogenesis; thus promoting tumor progression and metastasis. Serum levels of YKL-40 were significantly elevated in a broad spectrum of human cancers, including breast, colorectal, and ovarian cancer, suggesting that YKL-40 may serve as a biomarker for the cancer diagnosis and prognosis.

He completed a research-fellowship at the University of San Francisco, USA, with emphasis in genetic studies in otology. The degree of “Privatdozent” was given him by the University of Basel, where he is involved in regular teaching activities of medical students. He is special advisor for Otolaryngology for Orphanet, public database for rare diseases, and member of various national and international societies, such as Association for Research in Otolaryngology.

Andrea Mastinu is a Temporary Research Fellow in the Department of Molecular and Traslational Medicine, University of Brescia, Italy. Here he studies the pathophysiological and morphofunctional mechanisms of the autism in animal models with mutation on the p50 gene. His work group is evaluating inflammatory pathways involved in this pathology. He spent the past four years as a Postdoctoral Associate in National Research Council-Institute of Translational Pharmacology of Cagliari, Italy,  studying  the gene expression of hunger-satiety peptides, metabolic enzymes and monoaminergic transporters involved in side effects of rimonabant and other CB1 antagonists. He also serves as an Adjunct Professor in Biochemistry for medical disciplines at the University of Cagliari, Italy. He received his MSc Degree in Biological Sciences from University of Cagliari in 2004 and PhD in Neurosciences from University of Cagliari in 2014. He is an Member of Italian Society Of Neuroscience (SINS). He serves as a reviewer for Nutrition & Food Sciences. He is author of 12 papers indexed on PubMed and more than 20 proceedings for national and international conference.

Dr. Mark Kindy is a biochemist/neuroscientist and Professor/Associate Chair for Research in the Department of Regenerative Medicine and Cell Biology and Neurosciences at the Medical University of South Carolina and a Senior Research Career Scientist/Deputy Associate Chief of Staff for Research at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center in Charleston, SC.  He received his BS from the University of Massachusetts in Zoology and PhD from Boston University School of Medicine in Biochemistry.  He was a postdoctoral fellow at the Salk Institute.  Dr. Kindy started his faculty career at the University of Kentucky School of Medicine in the Department of Biochemistry and the Center on Aging.  His area of expertise is neurodegenerative disorders, animal modeling, mechanisms associated with diseases and regeneration of the brain.
