Biography :

Dr. Tagaya received  MD from Kyoto University Faculty of Medicine in 1986 and PhD in 1990 from the Graduate School, Faculty of Medicine, Kyoto University in Molecular Biochemistry. My research focus at that time was the analysis of a link between T cell activation and thiol-related reactions. From 1990 to 1994.I characterized and cloned this factor. In 1994, I joined the National Cancer Institute (Tom Waldmann’s lab) as a visiting associate and started my research on cytokines, in particular on interleukin-15. I have identified a new class of receptor for this cytokine, then demonstrated that this factor is critical for NK cell development. In 2002, my research group at the National Cancer Institute has proposed a new mode of IL-15 action in vivo, the IL-15 trans-presentation paradigm, and demonstrated a very unique nature of this cytokine. These complexes will be presented in trans to NK and T cells, the primary in vivo target for IL-15. My group subsequently showed that the trans-presentation mechanism operates in cancer immunity as well as in various autoimmune diseases to cause pathological activation of CD8 T cells.

Dr. Vernon is the author of more than 100 peer-reviewed articles, 15 book chapters and numerous abstracts. He is the Editor of two text books on the upper cervical spine (1988 & 2003).

Dr. Vernon received the FCER Researcher of the Year Award, 1993 and the Canadian Chiropractic Association Researcher of the Year Award, 1995. He was Chair, Consortium of Canadian Chiropractic Research Centres 1997 – 2004.

His primary area of research is on the cervical spine, especially the relationship between the upper cervical spine and headache. He is currently the Principal Investigator of an NIH-funded project to validate a sham cervical spinal manipulation for use in clinical trials and a co-investigator on a study of the development of an animal model of lumbar facet joint injury, pain and arthritis.

I currently work as Postdoctoral Fellow at Autoimmune Disease Center in The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, 350 Community Drive, Manhasset, NY 11030, USA.

 Biography
Research Interest :

My research focus on to understand the role of co-stimulatory molecules in target organ inflammation. Co-stimulatory receptors are involved in trafficking of immune cells to target organs. Normally, immune cells are sequestered in the lymphoid organs, such as the spleen and lymph nodes. When they traffic to a non-lymphoid organ, such as the kidney, they can induce inflammation. Recent work therefore focuses on lupus nephritis and the role of immune cell activation in kidney damage so as to understand the molecular basis for cell migration to the kidney and for resolution of inflammation after remission inducing therapies. Other project I am working on whether the deficiency or overexpression of circadian master transcriptional regulatory protein CLOCK/BMAL1 have any impact on lupus severity
