Dr. Dario Siniscalco is Research Associate for the Department of Experimental Medicine of the Second University of Naples (SUN), Italy. He graduated in Chemistry from the University of Naples “Federico II” in 2000 and received his Ph.D. in Pharmacological Sciences from SUN in 2004. He completed his neuropathology fellowship at University of Alabama at Birmingham, USA before joining the Second University of Naples staff in 2006. He is registered member of the following scientific societies: Order of the Chemists of Campania, National Council for Chemistry, Stem Cell Research Italy, International Association of Neurorestoratology, and European Association for Chemical and Molecular Sciences, Italian Pharmacological Society, Cell Death Research Group - University of Alabama at Birmingham, USA.

In 2010, in collaboration with Dr. Nicola Antonucci, he founded a research group to study cellular and molecular changes in autism spectrum disorders. Author or co-author of 54 scientific peer-reviewed papers and 9 book chapters. His works received 723 citations so far. Presented 95 communications/abstracts to national and international conferences. He is serving as an editorial board member and reviewer of more than 40 international journals. His main research interests: gene expression and molecular regulation in autism spectrum disorders; use of stem cells as therapeutic tool in autism; role of macrophage activation in autism. Other research interests: stem cells therapy for the neuronal recovery; studying of neuronal apoptosis. Role of bcl-2 family, caspases, and cell cycle regulator genes.

Dr. Rahbar is professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of Texas School of Public Health and serves as Director, Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Research Design (BERD) component of the Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences (CCTS) at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth). With funding from NICHD/FIC, Dr. Rahbar is investigating the role of five heavy metals (lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium, manganese) and their potential interaction with the GST gene in relation to autism in Jamaica. Since May 2004, Dr. Rahbar collaborated with colleagues at the CDC in assessing the prevalence of ASD in 16 US study sites (18 States), as part of the CDC-funded Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network (ADDM). In addition, he collaborated with the CDC and the CADDRE sites (also known as SEED) investigators in planning and implementing a multi-site case-cohort study to identify risk factors for ASD in the US.

Biography :

Dr. Rick Lin received his Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University in 1976. He did his post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Virginia. He was appointed to the rank of full professor in 1992 when he joined the faculty of Hahnemann University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  Later, in the fall of 1998, he came on board at the University of Mississippi Medical Center as a full professor in the Dept. of Anatomy. He received a joint appointment as full professor in the Dept. Psychiatry and Human Behavior in 2003. He has reviewed grant applications as a regular member of NIH study sections (VA, neurobiology, NINDS) for almost 7 years. He has served as an associate editor for the Anatomical Record from 2003 to 2010, and authored over 250 scientific articles, abstracts, and book chapters. He has also edited a book entitled, “New concepts in cerebral ischemia”, as well as two special issues for Anatomical Record. Among his many publications, nine reports have been published in prominent journals such as Nature, Science, and PNAS. He has been continuously funded by NIH, NSF, and private foundations throughout his 30+ years in research. Recently, he has received one of the most competitive and prestigious NIH grant awards, the EUREKA (Exceptional, Unconventional, Research Knowledge Acceleration) grant, which allows him to explore whether dysfunction of the serotonin system may be a critical biological factor for the recent surge of autism spectrum disorder in our society.

She has authored and co-authored 120 publications. She has used her expertise to identify and describe several novel genetic syndromes. She added new syndromes to the medical literature. She participated in determining the spectrum of gene mutations causing common genetic disorders in Egypt. She has contributed to find important gene variants developing biomarker detection tests. Stephen Grossberg is Wang Professor of Cognitive and Neural Systems and Professor of Mathematics, Psychology, and Biomedical Engineering at Boston University, where he is director of the Center for Adaptive Systems, founding chairman of the Department of Cognitive and Neural Systems, and founding director of the NSF Center of Excellence for Learning in Education, Science, and Technology (CELEST). She graduated from Shanghai Medical University in 1984 and received her PhD in Pharmacology from University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) in 1991. 
Dr. Ming completed a residency in Pediatrics at the State University of New York, Syracuse, NY; and a fellowship in Pediatric Neurology at Johns Hopkins Medical School in Baltimore, MD. 
She joined the faculty of the Department of Neurosciences and Neurology at the New Jersey Medical School, UMDNJ in 1997 and is currently an Associate Professor of Neurology at the same institute. 
Dr. Ming is certified by American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology with special competence in Child Neurology, and its subspecialty in Sleep Medicine. 
Dr. Ming was awarded with grants from the Cure Autism Now foundation, the New Jersey Governor’s Council on Autism Biomedical Research, the Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey, the UMDNJ Foundation etc.   Dr. Ming was recognized as best physician of the year by Center for Outreach and Services for Autism Community in 2003.  Dr. Ming has served as reviewer for grant funding agencies and peer reviewed journals.

Dr. S.H. Fatemi is currently an Associate Head for Neuroscience and Translational Research in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Minnesota Medical School. Moreover, he is a Professor of Psychiatry, Pharmacology, and Neuroscience. He received his Ph.D. in Human Anatomy from the University of Nebraska Medical Center and his M.D. from Case Western Reserve University Medical School. Dr.  Abha Chauhan is Head of the Developmental Neuroscience Laboratory at the New York State Institute for Basic Research in Developmental Disabilities (IBR), Staten Island, New York. She is also adjunct doctoral faculty member of the Neuroscience Subprogram at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. Dr. Chauhan received her Ph.D. from Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, India. From 1983 to 1984, she worked as a research associate at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York. Dr. Chauhan then joined IBR, where she has over 60 publications in the fields of oxidative stress, membrane biochemistry, signal transduction, Alzheimer’s disease, and autism. She is the editor of a book entitled “Autism: Oxidative stress, inflammation and immune abnormalities.” and of a “Special Issue on Autism Spectrum Disorders.” Dr. Chauhan has also organized and chaired symposiums on “Oxidative Stress and Inflammation in Autism Spectrum Disorders.”  For her work on autism, she has been awarded research grants as Principal Investigator from Department of Defense, Autism Speaks and Autism Research Institute.

Dr. Powell is a leading expert in understanding autism and related disorders using novel genetic animal models for which he received an Autism Young Investigator Award in 2007. His recent work is directed at studying synaptic genes that cause autism including neuroligins, neurexins, Shank3, & PTEN to name a few. Dr. Powell’s work has identified novel mechanisms of brain dysfunction and novel potential therapeutic targets in animal models of autism.  His laboratory efforts combine cutting edge molecular biology, biochemistry, neuronal morphology, brain slice electrophysiology, and behavioral characterization to identify how autism-associated mutations lead to brain dysfunction and to discover novel ways to treat these functional differences.

Ayman El-Baz, Ph.D., Associate Professor in the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Louisville, KY. Dr. El-Baz has ten years of hands-on experience in the fields of bioimaging modeling and computer-assisted diagnostic systems. He has developed new techniques for analyzing 3D medical images. His work has been reported at several prestigious international conferences (e.g., CVPR, ICCV, MICCAI, etc.) and in journals (e.g., IEEE TIP, IEEE TBME, IEEE TITB, Brain, etc.). Dr. El-Baz has extensive experience in automated diagnosis of autism in MR images. His work related to novel image analysis techniques for autism diagnosis has earned him multiple awards, including: first place at the annual Research Louisville 2002, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 meetings, and the "Best Paper Award in Medical Image Processing" from the prestigious ICGST International Conference on Graphics, Vision and Image Processing (GVIP-2005). Dr. El-Baz has authored or coauthored more than 192 technical articles (32 journals, 4 books, 23 book chapters, 103 refereed-conference papers, 30 abstracts published in proceedings, and 4 US patents).

Biography :

Dr. Yong-hui Jiang is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Medical Genetics and an Assistant Professor of Neurobiology at Duke University Medical Center.  In addition, he is an investigator in the Duke Institute of Brain Science and a member of the Duke University Programs in Genetics and Genomics and Cellular and Molecular Biology.  He received his MD at Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University in China and his PhD in Human and Molecular Genetics at Baylor College of Medicine, where he worked in the laboratory of Dr. Arthur Beaudet.  He completed a residency in pediatrics and fellowship in clinical genetics and biochemical genetics at the Texas Children’s Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine.  Dr. Jiang’s research program focuses on the molecular basis of neurodevelopmental disorders, with an emphasis on Angelman syndrome and autism spectrum disorder.  In an effort to define the role of epigenetic modification and synaptic function in these conditions, he is employing cutting-edge molecular methods and powerful mouse models developed using gene targeting techniques.

Biography :

I am an Associate Professor in the Smurfit Institute of Genetics in Trinity College Dublin and a member of the Trinity College Institute of Neuroscience.  I am a graduate of the Genetics Department, Trinity College Dublin (B.A., Mod. 1991) and received my Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley (1997), where I studied neural development with Prof. Corey Goodman.  I did postdoctoral research with Prof. Marc Tessier-Lavigne and Prof. Bill Skarnes at the University of California, San Francisco and Stanford University, using molecular genetics to study neural development in the mouse.  Since 2002 I have been on the faculty at Trinity College Dublin.  I have been an EMBO Young Investigator and was elected to Fellowship of Trinity College in 2009.

Biography :

Developmental Psychologist qualified to advance the ongoing investigations on child development contributing strengths in data-analysis techniques, statistical methods, hypothesis design and development with the aim of studying typical and atypical development. His specific focus is on the contribution of communicative and motor systems to the social development and their implication on psychopathology.
He has worked in the last years using observational and behavioral protocols in the context of child socio-cognitive development, always comparing typical and atypical development. He has gained proficient knowledge in social and cognitive development of children with special needs, in particular recognizing early indicators of autism specifically where concerning social development and expressions of distress evidenced in infants and children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Since 2010, he has joined the Riken Brain Science Institute (Japan), where he is working comparative neuro-behavioral analysis of infantile attachment behavior in mice and humans, and its implication to Autism.

Biography :

Elysa Marco is a clinical and research neurologist who specializes in cognitive and behavioral child neurology. She cares for children with types of neurologic concerns, however, she specializes in the evaluation and treatment of children with autism spectrum disorders. Her research centers on a thorough phenotypic evaluation combined with innovative functional imaging to better understand sensory and cognition. Her current research involves individuals with autism, sensory processing disorders, and agenesis of the corpus callosum.  The over arching goal of Dr. Marco’s research is to use basic science findings to create beneficial treatments for children.
Dr. Marco received her BA in psychology at the University of Pennsylvania and then obtained her MD at the University of California, San Francisco.  She continued her residency training at UCSF in pediatrics, neurology, and child neurology.  In addition, she completed a cognitive and behavioral fellowship with an emphasis on the genetics of cognitive impairment. She joined the faculty of UCSF in 2005 and is an active clinician, researcher, and educator.

Dr. Wang is an Assistant Professor of health economist in the department of public health sciences at the Penn State College of Medicine. She received her PhD in economics from the Pennsylvania State University in 2008. Dr. Wang is a health services researcher with special interest in autism. Her current research in autism includes comparison of the private and public insurance regarding the use of autism health care services, medication and resulting costs. Dr. Wang is also an econometrician and statistician by training, and has extensive experience with applied data analysis.

Ciria C. Hernandez, MD, PhD, is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurology at Vanderbilt University and Faculty Member of the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center. Her research is focused on understanding the basic mechanisms of epilepsy and how mutations alter the structure and function of gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) type A (GABAAR) receptor channels to cause epilepsy, and ultimately, to provide a mechanistic foundation for development of novel therapeutic strategies to treat or cure epilepsy. She has published more than 20 peer-reviewed papers in recognized scientific journals, presenting more than 50 peer-reviewed presentations at national and international scientific meetings, mentoring and training more than 10 students among undergraduate, pre-doctoral and research fellows, been the recipient of numerous awards and honors, has been invited speaker at universities and meetings around the country and around the world, has served on a variety of review boards and committees, and has participated in a number of academic programs. She has been doing fundamental research on mechanisms of ion channel biophysics, physiology and pathology for 15 years and has established a track record of making transformative breakthroughs for basic, translational, and clinical studies.

Dr. Marc obtained his PhD in cognitive neurosciences at the University of Louvain (Belgium).  Between 2002 and 2006 he worked as a postdoc at the Yale Child Study Centre (Yale University School of Medicine). He is currently a member of the social brain lab of the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience (Amsterdam) and the principal investigator of a research project on theory of mind and mirror neurons in autism. A health outcomes researcher by training, Dr. Rahul Khanna received his M.S. (2007) and Ph.D. (2010) from West Virginia University.  He completed his B.Pharm from Delhi University (1997), and MBA from Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (2004), India.  His research efforts are geared towards the use of claims data for pharmacoepidemiological research in the area of autism.  He is particularly interested in assessing the healthcare utilization and economic burden associated with autism, and the impact of the disorder on health-related quality of life of individuals and their caregivers.  Dr. Khanna has worked on both limited and public use datasets such as Medicaid and Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project to undertake autism-related research.  His work in autism has been published in leading peer-reviewed journals and presented at national conferences.

Sandra Costa was born in Portugal and soon she was attracted by new technologies. She have a graduation in Industrial Electronics Engineering and Computers, as well a master degree, with a thesis entitled "Robotics in Autism Therapy", in University of Minho. Now, in her PhD degree she is continuing to research on the same theme, trying to develop a robotic platform to increase Human-Robot Interaction with children with Autism.
For several years, Sandra Costa appreciated their extracurricular activities, being involved in Girl Guiding (Associação Guias de Portugal), in sports (Women Soccer in Casa do Povo de Martim, 1st National Division), for five years she was the representative of their class with the Academic Association of University of Minho, and more recent she was co-founder of the Portuguese Section of the IEEE Women in Engineering group.

I completed my doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Louisiana State University with a specialization in intellectual and developmental disabilities (ID/DD) and completed my clinical internship at UCLA’s Semel Institute of Neuroscience & Human Behavior in 2009. I currently work as a Community Psychology Clinician at the Greater New Orleans Resource Center on Developmental Disabilities and work with child and adult populations. I provide in-home psychological and behavioral assessment and treatment for individuals in the community, as well as service capacity building to professionals and support staff, provide health/medical education, conduct staff and parent training, individual skills training, behavioral psychopharmacology, and render consultation/liaison services to two parishes.

Dr. Abu-Amero received his BSc degree in Clinical Laboratory Sciences from the College of Applied Medical Sciences (King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia) in 1989. He then moved to England, UK where he studied Molecular Genetics at the University of London (UCL) and received his Master′s degree at the end of 1990. He then joined the Public Health Laboratories, Colindale, London, and worked there until April 1994. During that time, he obtained his Fellowship in Public Health. After which, he studied Molecular genetics at King′s College London (University of London) and awarded a Ph.D degree with special university honors in March 1997. He then joined Imperial College, School of Medicine as a Senior Research officer and worked on the genetics of various intrauterine growths retardation syndromes until April 1998. He then moved back to Saudi Arabia working at the Military Hospital, Riyadh where he established the first Molecular Genetics laboratory there. In June 2000, he joined the Research Centre at King Faisal Specialist Hospital at the Molecular Genetics and DNA diagnostic laboratory. In 2003, Dr. Abu-Amero established the Mitochondrial Research Laboratory, which deals with molecular and biochemical aspects of various mitochondrial disorders. In 2010, he became Fellow of the royal college of pathologists in Molecular and Medical Genetics. Dr. Abu-Amero published more than 120 scientific articles in high impact factors medical journals. Dr. Abu-Amero is currently an associate professor of medical genetics and head of the ophthalmic genetics laboratory at college of medicine, King Saud University, Riyadh.

Dr. Baffa is a certified special education teacher and board certified behavior analyst. She received her PhD in Autism and Intellectual Disabilities from Teachers College, Columbia University. Dr. Baffa has consulted with several school districts as an educational consultant and behavior specialist to develop effective programming strategies for students in direct instructional settings as well as inclusive environments. As an independent consultant she also provides in-home and school site ABA program development and delivery for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder and conducts parent training. She has extensive experience in the formation of social skills groups and measureable objectives for outcomes. In addition she instructs groups to facilitate play, social interactions with peers and skill generalization. As an adjunct professor at Sage, Dr. Baffa taught graduate courses in autism and behavior analysis; currently she serves as a BCBA supervisor for certification candidates and conducts seminars. In her current role as a consultant for ReThink Autism she supervises international and domestic candidates who are studying to become BCBA and BCaBA’s. She works closely with colleagues developing multi-cultural approaches to service and support of this disability.
