Dr. Kiran Velpula received his PhD doctoral degree in 2008 from University of Hyderabad, India. Dr. Velpula held post-doctoral positions at leading institutions such as the University of Central Florida and Case Western Reserve University. Dr. James E. Carroll, MD, received his medical degree from the University of Louisville and completed his training in child neurology at the University of Colorado. He served on the faculty of Washington University in St. Louis for eight years and then went to Georgia Health Sciences University in 1984 when he assumed the position there as Professor and Chief of Child Neurology, which is his current position. From 1988 to 1991 he was Professor of Pediatrics at Kuwait University Faculty of Medicine. Glutamate transport is central to neurotransmitter functions in the brain. The Excitatory amino acid transporter-2 (EAAT2) is the major glutamate transporter expressed predominantly by astrocytes in the brain. Dysregulation of glutamate transport induces neurotoxicity associated with numerous pathological processes, including HIV-1-associated dementia, Alzheimers disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Huntington′s disease, and stroke/ischemia. Our laboratory is interested in understanding the role of epigenetics in the regulation of EAAT2 expression in the context of NeuroAIDS. Our long term goal is to identifying therapeutic approaches that are capable of modulating EAAT2 expression that could potentially inhibit, ameliorate, or prevent various neurodegenerative diseases. The complement system is one of the key players in the innate immune defense against pathogens. Complement activation in excess can promote inflammation and tissue damage. Numerous studies in the last one and half decade have demonstrated that the complement system is activated by HIV and the system plays a significant role in HIV pathogenesis. Complement factor C3 up-regulation has been demonstrated in brain of SIV-infected macaques and in mice model of HIV infection.

Dr. VanMeter has 20 years of experience in the field of neuroimaging and the application of these techniques to the study of normal and abnormal brain development. His graduate work involved the development of computer algorithms used for the analysis of white matter and gray matter segmentation in structural MRI scans. Before joining the faculty at Georgetown, he spent five years directing the R&D effort that resulted in the first commercial, FDA-cleared system for functional brain imaging and a multi-modal imaging processing software package used by researchers at over 300 institutions worldwide. He has used a number of MRI-based techniques including fMRI, DTI, and MR spectroscopy to investigate the neurobiological basis of autism, the affects of alcohol on the brain, and pain perception disorders. Currently, he is the director of the Center for Functional and Molecular Imaging, which includes a 3T MRI scanner, high-density EEG, and a NIRS system.

Michael F. Waters, M.D., Ph.D. is Director of the Stroke Program in the Department of Neurology at the University of Florida & Shands Hospital. Under his direction, the acute stroke team ensures that Shands remains at the forefront of acute stroke care and serves as site principal investigator for clinical trials designed to improve clinical outcomes in stroke.
Dr. Waters received a masters degree in genetics from Penn State University. Biography :

Jing-Qiong (Katty) Kang is an assistant professor in the Department of Neurology in Vanderbilt University. Dr. Kang received her MD. PhD degree from Tongji Medical University, China and is a neurologist specialized in epilepsy. She joined Dr. Kenneth Maiese in the Department of Neurology, Wayne State University to study neurodegeneration briefly before she joined Dr. Robert Macdonald’s lab in Vanderbilt University Medical Center. There she has become a faculty member in the Department of Neurology, Vanderbilt Brain Institute and Vanderbilt Kennedy Center of Human Development. Dr. Kang is interested in understanding the pathophysiology of GABAA receptor gene mutations in various epilepsy syndromes especially Dravet syndrome. Her current research centers around using genetically modified mouse models to understand the role of GABAA receptors in normal development and diseased conditions especially epilepsy. Dr. Kang is an award recipient of Citizen United for Research in Epilepsy (CURE), Dravet.org which is formerly known as IDEA-League, Dravet syndrome foundation (DSF) and National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS).

He received Young Investigator Award from American Peptide Society, New Investigator Award from Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and Senior Research Scholar Award from Le Fonds de la Recherche en Sante de Quebec.

Biography :

Gustavo Turecki MD PhD obtained his medical degree in 1989, specialty in psychiatry in 1994 and PhD in neurosciences (genetics) in 1999. His research has focused on the study of biomedical risk factors for suicide, with particular interest to the intersection between clinical and basic research. Dr. Turecki holds a William Dawson Chair, heads the Depressive Disorders Program at the Douglas Mental Health University Institute and is the director of the McGill Group for Suicide Studies and the Quebec Suicide Brain Bank. He is also the director of the Quebec Suicide Research Network and Vice-Chair of Research and Academic Affairs of the Department of Psychiatry, McGill University. He is the recipient of several scientific awards, including the NARSAD Michael Kaplan Investigator Award, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Distinguished Investigator Award and the Radio-Canada Researcher of the Year 2009 for his pioneering work, in collaboration with colleagues Michael Meaney and Moshe Szyf, leading to the demonstration for the first time that childhood adversity influences epigenetic markings in the human hippocampus. Dr. Turecki has authored over 180 research articles in peer reviewed journals and book chapters and holds a salary award, as well as funding from several national and international agencies, including CIHR, NIH, FRSQ, NARSAD and AFSP.

Dr. Turecki’s group scientific contributions include the characterization of the role of impulsive-aggressive behaviors in suicide, the identification and characterization of polyamines as a system involved in the neurobiology of suicidal behavior, and the investigation of epigenetics in mood disorders and suicide.

He is actively involved in clinical studies investigating new treatment stretegies for PD, and studies of risk factors for PD in epidemiology, and project on newly defined Fragile X Associated Tremor Ataxia Syndrome. He also extends his clinical interests and expertise into the area of dystonia management and utilize electromyography to guide the injection of botulinum toxins.

Rickie Patani graduated with degrees in Medicine (MB,BS) and neuroscience (BSc) from Imperial College (London, UK) in 2004. He then completed his general medical training at Hammersmith Hospital and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square (UK). He obtained a PhD in Pluripotent Stem Cell Neurobiology from the University of Cambridge (UK) in 2011 as a Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Fellow, and is now completing higher training in clinical neurology while continuing laboratory-based research. Dr Patani is currently a Specialist Registrar and University Clinical Lecturer in Neurology at Cambridge University (UK).

Biography :

Over the years, he has been involved in many pattern recognition projects, particularly in the field of on-line and off-line handwriting analysis and processing. His main contribution has been the development of a kinematic theory of rapid human movements which can take into account the major psychophysical phenomena reported in studies dealing with rapid movements. The theory has been found successful in describing the basic kinematic properties of velocity profiles as observed in finger, hand, arm, head and eye movements. Professor Plamondon has studied and analyzed these biosignals extensively in order to develop creative and powerful methods and systems in various domains of engineering. Fellow of NIAS (1989), of IAPR (1994) and of IEEE (2000), Professor Plamondon has been involved in the planning and organization of numerous international conferences and workshops and has worked with scientists from many countries. He is the author or co-author of more than 300 publications and owner of four patents. He recently received the IAPR/ICDAR 2013 outstanding achievement award for “theoretical contributions to the understanding of human movement and its applications to signature verification, handwriting recognition, instruction, and health assessment, and for promoting on-line document processing in numerous multidisciplinary fields”.

Nancy Fathali holds a Ph.D. in neurophysiology from the Department of Human Anatomy and Pathology at Loma Linda University. She is currently a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Neurology and Neurological Sciences at Stanford University. In her current research endeavors, Dr. Fathali uses transgenic mouse models to study the molecular mechanisms involved in the cross talk between the peripheral and central nervous systems after stroke. She has served as an ad-hoc reviewer for several leading journals, and is currently a member of various editorial review boards. She has guest lectured medical scientists on central nervous system development and pathology, and was co-Instructor for a course on cerebral pathophysiology.

Yingbo He received her BA in Biopharmaceutics from China Pharmaceutical University in 2002 and Ph.D in Biology from Tsingua University in 2008. In her ph.D career, her interests mainly focus on uncovering the biochemical and biophysical mechanisms of protein misfolding, aggregation, and its role in neurodegeneration. She also studied on amyloid inhibition and animal model establishment for Alzheimer’s disease. During her postdoctoral training at Stanford University since 2008, her primary research area is to investigate the novel function of immune molecules and signaling in adult brain, with specific interest in adult neurogenesis and neuroprotection with transgenic mouse models. This may provide some clues in the therapy of neurodegenerative diseases.

Martina Vendrame graduated from the University of Padova (Italy) in 1999. She obtained a PhD in Neuroscience from University of South Florida in 2004, completed a residency in Neurology at Temple University Philadelphia in 2008, and a fellowship in Clinical Neurophysiology at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital Harvard University in 2010. She is currently Assistant Professor in Neurology at Boston University. Dr Vendrame’s research focuses on sleep disorders in patients with seizures and epilepsy, including sleep apnea, insomnias, and parasomnias. She received the American Academy of Neurology Award for Clinical Research in 2009. She is an active member of the American Academy of Neurology, American Epilepsy Society and American Academy of Sleep Medicine, and serves in the American Academy of Sleep Medicine Research Committee.
