Dr. George Perry is dean of the College of Sciences and professor of biology at The University of Texas at San Antonio. Perry is recognized in the field of Alzheimer's disease research particularly for his work on oxidative stress. Perry received his bachelor's of arts degree in zoology with high honors from University of California, Santa Barbara. After graduation, he headed to Scripps Institution of Oceanography and obtained his Ph.D. in marine biology under David Epel in 1979. He then received a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Cell Biology in the laboratories of Drs. Bill Brinkley and Joseph Bryan at Baylor College of Medicine where he laid the foundation for his observations of abnormalities in cell structures.

Dr. Thomas Lufkin Research is in the novel area of Developmental Genomics and Regenerative Medicine with a focus on the molecular mechanisms controlling vertebral column development and an emphasis on early embryogenesis and embryonic stem cell commitment to specific differentiation pathways, but from a novel Systems Biology point of view. We use both mouse and zebrafish as model animals. In particular we are working on understanding the gene regulatory networks (GRNs) that govern normal embryonic development of the vertebral column and intervertebral disc (IVD). We are investigating the role of transcriptional regulators in the restriction of pluripotent embryonic stem cells into specific lineages that in turn comprise functional pre and postnatal vertebral elements with the goal of applying this knowledge to regenerative medicine using patient- specific induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells and adult mesenchymal stem cells."

He graduated with honors at the University of Seville followed by a Masters in Cellular and Molecular Biology at the Center for Applied Medical Research [CIMA] at the University of Navarre. He obtained a PhD at the University of Seville and currently he is an Associate Professor in the Department of Stomatology at the US. Rajiv Mohan is a Professor of Ophthalmology, School of Medicine at the University of Missouri, Columbia, Missouri, USA, and holds a joint appointment as a biomedical scientist at the Harry S. Truman Veterans Memorial Hospital. He has authored 90 peer-reviewed research articles and over 180 abstracts. Dr. Mohan’s cutting edge research has received numerous prestigious national and international awards and focuses on corneal gene therapy, corneal wound healing, refractive laser surgery (PRK, LASIK), and corneal scarring and angiogenesis. DNA transposons proved to be remarkably useful as transgenic vectors as well as insertional mutagens in certain vertebrate species. Some of the main characteristics of a desirable transposon vector are: ease of use, relatively wide host-range, little size or sequence limitations, efficient chromosomal integration, and stable maintenance of faithful transgene expression throughout multiple generations of transgenic cells and organisms. Bin Wu, Ph.D. HCLD (ABB) is currently a director of the Assisted Reproductive Technology Laboratories at Arizona Center for Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility in USA. He received his training in animal genetics and reproductive biology at the Northwest Agricultural University in China and Cornell University, New York, where he worked with leading reproductive scientists in the field. Then, Dr. Wu was trained as a post-doctor fellow to work with famous embryo cryo-biologist Dr. Stanly Leibo at the University of Guelph in Canada. Dr. Wu ever was promoted as a professor to teach animal genetics, molecular genetics and reproductive bio-technology courses for graduate students in the College of Animal and Veterinary Sciences at the Northwest Agricultural University. As an embryologist, he later joined at the Center for Human Reproduction, the largest assisted reproduction facility in Chicago. Since 2001, Dr. Wu has been a chief embryologist and scientific laboratory director to obtain high IVF pregnant rates at Arizona Center.

Wu has an extensive research background with interest in oocytes in vitro maturation, embryo and egg freezing, testicular biopsy sperm in vitro culture, preimplantation genetic diagnosis, nuclear transfer, molecular biology, as well as perfecting blastocyst culture. He has published some significant papers on molecular regulation of oocyte in vitro maturation and cryobiology, embryo sexing, proto-oncogene expression by preimplantation embryos, optimal use of testicle biopsy tissue sperm in peer review journals. Dr. Wu is a member of many professional associations, such as the American Society for Reproductive Medicine; the International Embryo Transfer Society; the Society for the Study of Reproduction; American Association of Bioanalysts, Pacific Coast Reproductive Society and European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology. Dr. Pelosi received his PhD in Medical Biotechnology from University of Bologna, Italy in 2006. He joined the Laboratory of Genetics – Human Genetics Section – at NIA/NIH in Baltimore as a postdoctoral Visiting Fellow under the direction of Dr. Schlessinger. He finished his postdoctoral appointment in 2011, and then accepted a position as Research Fellow in the Laboratory of Genetics. Dr. Luigi Mandrich is currently researcher at the Institute of Protein Biochemistry of Italian National Research Council. He has graduated in Biological Sciences in 1997 at the University of Naples “Federico II”, and in 2004 he has received PhD in Industrial Biotechnology at the University of Naples “Federico II”. During his training he muoved in The Netherland and Argentina to exploiting new approach to use exogenous enzyme in cheese making. He has carried out research in the field of biochemistry, acquiring advanced skills in enzymology, molecular biology, biotechnological applications and proteomic; actually he is involved in projects that regard recombinant technology to produce and study human and bacterial proteins (paraoxonases) involved in detoxification by pesticides. Main research line is the study of the structure-function relationship in enzymes from the viewpoint of understanding the determinants that underlay (thermal)stability and the molecular processes which control the substrate recognition, enzyme inhibition and enzyme catalysis. The tasks are approached mainly by studying enzymes from (hyper)thermophilic sources, mainly from Archaea and are also performed by comparison with mesophilic, homologous counterparts, which allow tracing back evolution of enzyme activity by looking at sequence/structure hallmarks and promiscuous activities. Furthermore, the potential uses of these enzymes in the industry, for the environment and for human health are investigated.

Dr. Anthony was trained as a Veterinarian at the National Taiwan University and received my PhD training at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I create the first transgenic monkey in 2001 and the first transgenic Huntington’s disease monkey in 2008. My research is focused on the development of transgenic nonhuman primate model of inherited human disease such as Huntington’s and Alzheimer’s diseases. My lab also has great interest in developing pluripotent stem cell model for studying pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases and develop in vitro platform for the development of novel treatments including new drugs, gene and cell therapy in parallel with our transgenic monkey model. In addition to extensive longitudinal studies on our transgenic monkey model and stem cell research, we are developing transgenic MRI reporter that we hope to apply in stem cell replacement study in nonhuman primates.

Dr. Anthony research is focused on the development of a nonhuman primate model (NHP) of Huntington’s disease (HD) that is not only physiologically comparable to humans but also carries a mutant huntingtin (HTT) gene that leads to HD (Yang et al., 2008) as well as an Alzheimer’s monkey model. Our goal interest is to study progression of disease through longitudinal studies in transgenic monkey model. Longitudinal studies including non-invasive imaging, gene expression/small RNA profiling,metabolomics, and cognitive behavioral evaluation. In addition to the development of animal models, we are developing genetically modified pluripotent stem cells by different method including iPS, parthenogeneisis and from IVF generated embryos as a tool for modeling disease development and developing novel platforms for drug discovery research and the development of cell and gene therapy. We also developing transgenic MRI reporter for monitoring of cell graft in nonhuman primates.

Ca2+ is a key element in cell signaling mechanism. As an ion, it contributes to the cell membrane potential. As a messenger, it interacts with tens of intracellular effector proteins, including many enzymes, and regulates diversified cellular functions: contraction, secretion, motility, gene expression, proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis etc. Resting intracellular free calcium level ([Ca2+]i) is usually low (100 nM), considered as a “zero / silent state”. Upon stimulations, [Ca2+]i can be raised up either by Ca2+ influx across the plasma-membrane or by Ca2+ release from intracellular store (the ER and related organelles) through variety of calcium channels. For example, store-operated Ca2+ channels (SOC) exist in numerous cell types, serving as the main source for Ca2+ entry in most non-excitable cells. Regulated activity of SOC channels is essential to the immune response and may play an important role in the cardiovascular system. He is interested in the Ca2+ signaling transduction network. His goal is to discover and understand the missing pieces of this big puzzle, using techniques of molecular biology, biochemistry, and genetics. Currently I am focusing on the structures and functions of two newly identified protein components of SOC channels: Stim1 (the ER Ca2+ sensor for SOC activation) and Orai1 (the pore-forming subunit of SOC channels), which are both potential drug targets to treat autoimmune disorders and prevent organ transplant rejection.

Dr. Gang Zhang got his Ph. D. from Shandong Normal University and Chinese Academy of Sciences, China, majoring on the study of mouse pronuclear exchange and nuclear transfer in 2005. Then, I worked as a Postdoc Fellow at the Department of Cell and Systems Biology (2005-2007), and then moved to the Centre for Research in Neurodegenerative Diseases as a Research Technician II (2008-2012), University of Toronto, Canada. During this period, my research mainly focused on Parkinson disease, which included the differentiation of neural stem cells into dopamine neurons, and the molecular mechanism of Parkinson disease. Particularly, I developed a new method, designated as “Combinatorial Strategy” to clone different plasmid vectors with various clone sites, and also optimized the protocols of lentiviral transduction to establish stable transgene cell lines efficiently. Now, I am a Research Associate (Research Technician II) at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard University.

Nelson S. Yee is a physician-scientist-pharmacist at the Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute, where he is the attending physician of medicine in medical oncology and he specializes in treating patients with cancers of pancreas, liver, biliary tract, esophagus, stomach and intestines. He is director of the Laboratory of Pancreatic Development and Cancer, and his research focuses on the developmental biology and genetics of exocrine pancreas in the zebrafish and translating the developmental regulators of exocrine pancreas into disease biomarkers and therapeutic targets for in pancreatic adenocarcinoma. He is an editorial board member of the Clinical Cancer Drugs, and he is a guest editor of the Current Clinical Pharmacology. Yee\'s research program focuses on the developmental biology and genetics of exocrine pancreas in the zebrafish and translating the developmental regulators of exocrine pancreas into clinical biomarkers and molecular targets for personalized therapy in pancreatic adenocarcinoma. To determine the molecular mechanisms underlying development of exocrine pancreas, part of our efforts involve cloning DNA constructs using the technologies such as TALEN and CRISPR to generate transgenic zebrafish with targeted mutations. These transgenic zebrafish will be useful tools for studying the genetic regulation of the developmental events during pancreatic morphogenesis.

Biography :

Shahein received Ph.D in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Cordoba University (Spain) then; he joined Toronto University (Canada) as a postdoctoral scientist. He is currently an associate professor in the department of molecular biology at the National Research centre, Egypt. His research concerns with the production of recombinant vaccines against ticks. He has cloned several genes that may play a role in the vector-host relationship. Dr Shahein had constructed two cDNA libraries for both cattle and camel local hard tick strains; Rhipicephalus annulatus and Hyalomma dromedarii, respectively. Dr Shahein received research grants from MUCIA (University of Illinois, USA-2005-2007), ASTF (United Arab of Emirates-2007-2009), and KACST (Kingdom of Saudi Arabia-2010-2014).

Shahein started his postdoctoral research studying the apoptotic pathways downstream of the tumor suppressor retinoblastoma (Rb) in KO mouse. The ongoing research theme of Dr Shahein focuses on molecular cloning and gene expression of tick genes infesting cattle and camels in Egypt and Middle East. He produced recombinant proteins from several cloned genes as potential anti-tick vaccines.

Dr. Vikash Kumar Dubey has completed his PhD from Banaras Hindu University, India. After his postdoctoral training at Florida State University, USA, he joined Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati. Dr. Dubey’s group is extensively involved in research using interdisciplinary approaches. Dr. Dubey’s group has used integrated computational, molecular and biochemical approaches to target various key enzymes leishmania parasite. He has identified compounds that can inhibit the biological function of key enzymes of the trypanothione metabolism with aim to develop potential anti-leishmanial drug. He has also made significant contribution in discovering novel lead candidates from Indian medicinal plants for the treatment of leishmaniasis that can be further developed in affordable drugs. Dr. Dubey has likewise made cutting edge contributions to the general knowledge of the scientific community regarding protein folding-misfolding, protein structure symmetry and the role of turn sequences in the stabilization of proteins.

Dr. Karen W. Y. Yuen completed her PhD in the Department of Medical Genetics at the University of British Columbia, Canada, studying chromosome instability in the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae and human cancers. She then pursued her post-doctoral training as a Croucher Fellow at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research and the University of California, San Diego, USA, studying centromere and kinetochore formation and propagation in Caenorhabditis elegans. Dr. Yuen is currently an Assistant Professor in the School of Biological Science at the University of Hong Kong. Dr. Yuen has received the Hong Kong Research Grants Council Early Career Award. She is now focusing on cellular mechanisms involved in chromosome segregation. She is also interested in the development of accurately segregating artificial chromosomes.

Dr. Yuen’s research is focused on cellular mechanisms involved in chromosome segregation, including centromere and kinetochore function, sister chromatid cohesion, and epigenetic regulation. She is interested in the mechanism of de novo centromere establishment on chromosomes in cancers, chromosome rearrangements, evolution and on artificial chromosomes. She is also involved in the development of accurately segregating artificial chromosomes for applications as cloning vectors and gene therapies.
