Research was initially in my major interest, cardiac pacing, where Westminster pioneered the introduction and development of dual chamber cardiac pacing. A grant for British Heart Foundation Junior Fellowship was given for the support of Dr C Morley.  Later my interests spread more widely and have had additional very close co operation with the Department of Endocrinology at Westminster.  This co operative effort resulted in winning a British Heart Foundation project grant for the study of the atrial natriuretic peptide.  Westminster introduced head-up tilt test as a diagnostic investigation for syncopal patients. This has now become a worldwide standard investigation of syncope underlined by American College of Cardiology consensus, J Am Coll Cardiol 1996 and ESC Task Force Report on Syncope, Eur. Heart J. 2001, Europace 2004. My efforts are now directed towards:
Vasovagal syncope.
Chronotropic incompetence as a phenomenon in vasovagal patients.
Expanding the clinical role of cardiac pacing.
New sensors for cardiac pacing and haemodynamic and electrocardio-grahic monitoring
Resynchronization cardiac pacing.
At St Mary’s these interests continued with the addition of more expansion into the neurological control of the heart and development of pacemakers that are safe in Magnetic Resonance scanners.

Augmenting cancer-based vaccination through different approaches that can elicit robust effector and memory responses of immune cells. I use the following approaches: 1) active vaccination with ex vivo dendritic cells pulsed with the target antigens in combination of agonists for the toll-like receptors (TLRs) expressed on dendritic cells; 2) augmenting T cell activation, survival, and function by cytokines and TLR agonists in vitro before to use them for adoptive T cell therapy. Measuring the phenotype and function of the immunoregulatory cells that associate with advanced stage of cancers. I focus my studies on the immature myeloid-derived suppressive cells (MDSC) and CD4+CD25+FoxP3+ T regulatory (Treg). A great interest is to develop efficacious strategies that can interfere with the regulatory functions of these cells or approaches that induce their differentiation into immunopotentiating populations. Treatment of pancreatic cancer patients with a combination of the adjuvant TLR3 agonist poly(I:C) and autologous dendritic cells pulsed with defined tumor HLA-A2 binding peptides.
