Biography :
Abass Alavi, MD is a Professor of Radiology and Director of Research Education of the Department of Radiology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and former Chief of the Division of Nuclear Medicine. He also served as Medical Director of the Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Center at Penn’s flagship hospital. In addition to a busy clinical practice, he dedicates much of his time to teaching residents and conducting research into the clinical applications of PET imaging for the detection of cancer and other serious disorders such as dementia, seizures, and cardiovascular disease. An internationally recognized leader in medical imaging, Alavi holds editorial positions with over a dozen prestigious science journals, including the Journal of Nuclear Medicine, the European Journal of Nuclear Medicine and the Journal of Experimental & Clinical Cancer Research. He has authored or co-authored over 100 pieces about nuclear medicine, and has published over 500 peer-reviewed articles in such leading periodicals as the American Journal of Physiology, Cancer, Gerontology, the Journal of Clinical Nuclear Medicine, the Journal of Nuclear Medicine, and the New England Journal of Medicine, Neurology, and Oncology. Alavi has also edited or co-edited eight books related to medical imaging and to conventional and modern modalities. A frequent speaker at scientific meetings worldwide, Alavi has been active in more than a dozen international, national and local medical societies. From 1999 to 2000, he chaired the study section of the American Cancer Society. Alavi is also a founding member of the Brain Imaging Council of the Society of Nuclear Medicine and served as council vice-president and president from 1992-1996. Alavi joined the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1971 as a research fellow in nuclear medicine after completing his education in internal medicine, hematology and radiology. He soon was appointed to the faculty where he currently holds appointments as Professor of Radiology, Director of Research Education, Department of Radiology, and former Chief, Division of Nuclear Medicine.
