OMICS is a new word introduced into the field of life sciences. The term OMICS refers to the field of studies in Biology. This English-language neologism, OMICS informally refers to a field of study in biology ending in -omics, such as genomics or proteomics.
The term OMICS is essentially a suffix used to denote a specialized field of study in life sciences, such as genomics, proteomics or metabolomics, etc… The related suffix -ome is used to address the objects of study of such fields, such as the genome or proteome, respectively.
OME and Omics are convenient ways to describe a holistic way of looking at complex systems. In the mid 1990′s bioinformatists started realizing the convenience of -omics and used terms for many fields; such as, metabolome, textome, interactome, bacteriome, eukaryome, functome, patentome, neurome and so on.
