Department of Civil Engineering & Construction
Dr. Maillacheruvu has served on the Water Environment Federation’s (WEF) Task Force on Clarifier Design as well as the Task Force on Industrial Wastewater Management, Treatment, and Disposal. He has also chaired sessions at international conferences and serves as a reviewer for many top international journals in environmental engineering and science. He is currently the Chair of the Publications Committee, Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors (AEESP). Dr. Maillacheruvu served on the Newtown Creek Advisory Panel for a $1.2 billion upgrade of a 330 MGD wastewater treatment plant in Brooklyn, NY. He has worked on modeling and clean-up efforts related to Lake Ulsoor in Bangalore, India as part of a non-profit group led by E.R.G. Ltd, Bangalore, India. Dr. Maillacheruvu’s research interests include biological treatment systems (aerobic and anaerobic), industrial waste treatment and reuse, mathematical modeling of environmental systems (water), and hazardous waste treatment and management (emerging technologies for soil and groundwater clean-up). He is currently developing the area of electrokinetics-enhanced bioremediation which has the potential to provide low-cost in situ treatment of organic wastes in the subsurface environment. In addition to several publications in national (US) and international journals and conferences, Dr. Maillacheruvu has co-authored a book: Industrial Wastewater Management, Treatment, and Disposal (WEF Press, McGraw-Hill, 2008).
Dr. Maillacheruvu has developed several courses over his academic career including Geoenvironmental Engineering, Solid Waste Management (with a sustainability approach), Industrial and Hazardous Waste Treatment, Environmental Regulations and Policy, and Transport Phenomena in Environmental Systems. Dr. Maillacheruvu has received several awards including the 2009 and 2010 Outstanding faculty Awards from the Dept. of Civil Engineering & Construction as well as the 2010 Putnam Award for Teaching Excellence from Bradley University. Dr. Maillacheruvu graduated from I.I.T. Madras (1985) with a B.Tech. in Civil Engineering. After working briefly in India, he went to the U.S to obtain his M.S. and Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from University of Iowa (1993). After postdoctoral work at the University of Florida, Gainesville, Dr. Maillacheruvu taught at Polytechnic University, Brooklyn NY (now part of NYU) from 1994 to 1997. Dr. Maillacheruvu is on the faculty at Bradley University since 1997. Between January and June 2011, Dr. Maillacheruvu was Visiting Associate Professor, I.I.T. Bombay, Mumbai, India, while on sabbatical from Bradley University.
