Panagiotis K. Artemiadis received the Diploma and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) Greece, in 2003 and 2009 respectively. From 2009 to 2011 he was a postdoctoral research associate with the Mechanical Engineering Department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, at the Newman Laboratory for Biomechanics and Human Rehabilitation. He worked on the development and control of novel robotic devices for human motor rehabilitation. From 2004 to 2008 he was working on many research labs in Europe and US on the control of robotic devices and development of decoding algorithms for brain-machine interfaces. Since August 2011 he is appointed as Assistant Professor in the School of Engineering for Matter, Transport and Energy, in Arizona State University.

Biography :

Dr. Zahra Kadivar has received Bachelor’s degree in physical therapy from Shriaz University of Medical Sciences in Iran, in 2003. Having worked as a physical therapist and shared in many people’s lives and witnessing lack of evidence based practice in many physical therapy clinics, inspired me to step into the research field. As a clinician she was able to have a part in health improvement of many patients, as a scientist she was able to help establish proper methods of care. Immediately after receiving my Bachelor’s degree I moved to U.S.A to pursue higher education. She has started a PhD program in Rehabilitation Sciences at University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC) in August 2004 where I worked with stroke patients to help them gain balance with evidence-based training.  A year later, she transferred to Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, and pursued PhD in Kinesiology with emphasis on human motor behavior. Transferring to Louisiana State University, Department of Kinesiology, allowed me to work with Parkinson’s patients who suffer from movement complications due to degeneration of specific areas in the brain. By working with experts in the field of movement disorders (Dr. Daniel Corcos), motor learning (Dr. Richard Magill) and motor control (Dr. Jan Hondzinski) she was able to develop a rehabilitation program for Parkinson’s patients with different levels of disability which became the primary focus of my dissertation. She has completed her PhD in December 2009 and currently she is a post-doctoral fellow at Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM).  As a post-doctoral fellow at BCM, she had the opportunity to pursue my interest in evidence-based practice by working with Dr. Marcia O’Malley (Department of Mechanical Engineering, Rice University) and Dr. Mary Newsome (Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, BCM) where research effectiveness of robotic rehabilitation for persons with spinal cord injury and stroke.

Biography :

Dr. Sudan completed his pre-medical education at Delhi University in Delhi, India in 1975, he then was selected to join the Armed Forces Medical College in Pune, India. Soon after training, 1979, he left India and went to Nigeria to serve as a medical officer in a community medical center. Upon completing his commitment in Nigeria, Dr. Sudan immigrated to the United States.
Dr. Sudan trained with Nobel Prize nominee, Dr. Leland Clark at the Children’s Hospital in Cincinnati. As a Fellow in Neurophysiology, he was involved in the development of in vivo glucose sensors. Dr. Sudan then pursued a residency in Psychiatry and completed his training in Adult Psychiatry at Wright State University (WSU) in Dayton, Ohio and subsequently in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Columbia University in New York. Dr. Sudan then began his residency in General Surgery at Wright State University.
After residency, Dr. Sudan decided to specialize in Bariatric Surgery as this field combines the technical expertise of surgery with many elements of psychiatry. He developed a Bariatric Surgery program at the University of Nebraska and later at Creighton University Medical Center which has become the flagship for the hospital. His area of special interest is the application of the da Vinci robotic system to complex surgical procedures. Dr. Sudan performed the first bowel resection robotically in 2000 and that same year performed the first duodenal switch using the da Vinci system. He now has the largest series of robotically performed bilio pancreatic diversion with the duodenal switch. This operation results in faster resolution of diabetes than the roux en y gastric bypass. He has also demonstrated the feasibility of complex urologic procedures robotically such as total cystoprostatectomy with ileal conduit. These techniques have been published and he has given several national presentations.
Education is a passion of Dr. Sudan’s. He briefly served as the Clerkship Director and Associate Program Director for Psychiatry at Wright State University. During his tenure at Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, Dr. Sudan was the Director of the Bariatric Fellowship Program, Director of the General Surgery Residency Program and Associate Chair of Medical Education.
In 2008, Dr. Sudan joined the faculty at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina as Associate Professor of Surgery and Psychiatry, Vice Chair of Education in the Department of Surgery, Medical Director, Surgical Grand Rounds, and Medical Director, Surgical Education Activities Laboratory.

Dr. Mufti Mahmud was born in a small north-western town of Bangladesh. Dr. Mahmud completed his Bachelor and Masters degrees in Computer Science from University of Madras and University of Mysore on 2001 and 2003, respectively under the Cultural Exchange Programme (CEP) scholarship from the Government of India. He completed yet another Second Level Masters in Nano and Micro Electromechanical Systems (Bio-NEMS/MEMS) from University of Trento, Italy in 2007 followed by a PhD in Bioengineering from University of Padova, Italy in 2010. At present he is serving as an Assistant Professor at the Jahangirnagar University, Bangladesh, and also as a Postdoctoral fellow at the NeuroChip Lab of University of Padova, Italy. In his diversified career, Dr. Mahmud worked in the Indian software industry as a software engineer, at university as a lecturer of computer science & engineering, also as a staff scientist at a Biotech company. His fields of research are high resolution brain-chip interface, neuronal signal processing, brain-machine interfacing including robotics, intelligent system development for neuroscience applications.

Paulo Santos received his PhD degree in electrical engineering from Imperial College, London, UK in 2003, working on the development of a spatial reasoning system for mobile robots. He was a research assistant at the School of Computing, University of Leeds, UK from mid-2003 to 2005 where he was part of a team of researchers that conceived and developed a computer vision system that was awarded the British Machine Intelligence Price in 2004. Dr Nicolas Christian BUCHS, MD, is Faculty and Swiss Board Certified Surgeon at the Department of Surgery, University Hospitals of Geneva, Switzerland. He received his medical degree from the University of Geneva and completed his General Surgery Residency at the University Hospital of Geneva, Switzerland. He received his medical doctorate in 2007 with his work on the vascularisation of the pancreas and its surgical importance for treating pancreatic cancer. He also worked as attending surgeon in the Emergency Department of the University Hospital of Geneva, before arriving in Chicago, USA, in 2009. He joined Professor Giulianotti’s team, pioneer in the field of robotic surgery. He did a research Fellowship in the Division of General, Minimally Invasive and Robotic Surgery at the University of Illinois at Chicago. When he returned to Geneva, he was promoted Faculty Surgeon and Head of the Multidisciplinary Center for Surgical Teaching - Centre Multidisciplinaire d’Enseignement Chirurgical (CMEC) at the Department of Surgery, University Hospitals of Geneva. Over the last 6 years, Dr Buchs has published more than 50 scientific papers concerning mainly surgical oncology with a special interest in new technology for pancreatic and colorectal surgery. He is especially interested in the minimally invasive and robotic approach and its applications in general surgery.

Ngai-Fong Law received the BEng degree with first class Honours from the University of Auckland, New Zealand, in 1993 and a PhD degree from the University of Tasmania, Australia, in 1997, both in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. She is currently an associate professor in Electronic and Information Engineering Department, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong. Her research interests include signal and image processing, wavelet transform, image enhancement and compression. Dr. Law has published 56 research papers, 27 of which appeared in archival international journals, such as IEEE Transactions on Image Processing and Pattern Recognition. Recently she has also extended her study into a new area on bioinformatics, working on gene expression and DNA sequence analysis. Novel results for gene expression data analysis and efficient biclustering algorithms have been achieved and published in recent issues of international journals with good attention from peers, such as a recent paper in 2008 has been classified as a ‘highly access’ article in BMC Bioinformatics journal which has an impact factor of 3.49.

Ho-Sheng Lin, MD, FACS is a Professor at the Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery at Wayne State University School of Medicine, leader of the Multidisciplinary Head and Neck Tumor Team at Karmanos Cancer Institute, and chief of Otolaryngology at the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center. Raymond H. W. Lam is currently working as an Assistant Professor in the Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering Department in City University of Hong Kong since Sept. 2011. He holds a first honor B.Eng. degree (2003) and an M.Phil. degree (2005) in Automation and Computer-aided Engineering from Chinese University of Hong Kong, and a Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After graduation, he worked as a postdoctoral fellow in Mechanical Engineering Department in University of Michigan from Sept. 2010 to Aug. 2011. Beside the achievement on academic publications, he obtained various awards including the champion of Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) graduate student paper contest for the Asia-Pacific region in 2005, and the Croucher Foundation Scholarship for 2005-2008. In addition to his role on the faculty at Olin College, Dr. Bennett is responsible for developing the SCOPE program, establishing the strategic corporate partnerships that support it and directing the student/faculty SCOPE teams. He has more than 20 years of R&D experience developing novel robot systems for land, water and air use. In 1985-86 Dr. Bennett worked at the Stanford Department of Mechanical Engineering on a novel robotic all-terrain vehicle. From 1991-97 he worked on a variety of autonomous underwater vehicles at the MIT AUV lab, including the Sea Squirt, Odyssey I, Odyssey II and the WHOI Autonomous Benthic Explorer. From 1997-98 he worked on control systems for underwater vehicles and SSTO rocket systems at the Charles Stark Draper Laboratory. From 1998 to 2000 he worked for Walt Disney Imagineering Research & Development where he helped create a full-sized walking quadruped robot technology demonstrator and several ride effects currently installed in Disney’s Animal Kingdom. From 2000-08 he was Director of Research and the Division Technology Officer (DTO) for iRobot’s Government and Industrial Robotics division where he oversaw all research and technology development and related activities. At iRobot he was also the Program Manager in charge of developing the PackBot mobile robot system under the DARPA Tactical Mobile Robotics (TMR) Program. From 2008-10 Dr. Bennett was the VP for Research & Development at Scientific Systems Company, Inc. of Waltham, MA where he oversaw technical direction for a variety of cutting edge control and sensor development programs. Dr. Bennett served on numerous advisory boards, including the medical advisory board to the Joint Improvised Explosive Device Defeat Organization (JIEDDO) and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). He hold a professor chair in robotics at Lund University from 1987-2010. Research interests include robotics in general, but more specifically industrial robotics and service robotics. Research related to industrial robots has been to develop areas related to programming, simulation and control of robots targeting to tasks and work processes, e.g. grinding, welding or general manipulation. In such areas, sensor feedback is important, which has included vision and force feedback, but also process specific sensing for control of monitoring purposes. Biography :

I am a reader (associate professor) in adaptive systems at the school of Computer Science, the University of Hertfordshire. I am also a member of Adaptive Systems Research Group. I coordinate the Accompany and SCRIPT projects funded by the framework 7 programme of the European Community. I am a former member of the THINKlab, at University of Salford, UK, 2006-2008 where I held the position of Technical Director and was a member of Centre for Rehabilitation and Human Performance Research (CRHPR). Prior to that, I worked as a Senior Research Fellow at Centre for Rehabilitation Engineering Studies (CREST), Newcastle University, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK, where I was involved with the i-match project, working with Prof Garth Johnson, 2003-2006. From 2000 to 2003, I worked as a Research Associate at the school of Cybernetics, the University of Reading, UK, where I worked with Prof Harwin and a pan-European team of researchers in developing the GENTLE/s robot for neurorehabilitation. Prior to these, from 1990-1999, I have been involved in different software/hardware engineering capacities, varying from hardware technician (1990) to junior programmer, senior programmer, system analyst and senior system analyst(1999). I am a member of IEEE – Institution of the Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and involved in Engineering in Medicine and Biology, Robotics and Automation, Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Societies. I am also a member of IET – Institution of Engineering and Technology. In addition, I am a member of KT-Equal network, European Robotics Research Network (Euron), Health Technologies KTN, Electronics, Sensors and Photonics KTN and on the steering committee for the special interest group in Autonomous Systems in this knowledge transfer network (EKTN).

He has more than 15 published papers in indexed national and international journals and is on Editorial Board of Austin Journal of Gastroenterology. He is an active reviewer for several peer reviewed international indexed medical journals. He has also presented papers in many national conferences and won awards.
