 Biography :

Professor Raffaele Savino graduated in Aeronautical Engineering from Naples University in 1988. In 1993, he completed a PhD in Aerospace Engineering and in 1995, he was awarded a Research post at the same university, a post he held until 2000. Prof. Savino was an Invited Lecturer in 1997, on Microgravity Sciences at the International Space University at Strasbourg and contributed to the publication of the International Space University Core Book, published by McGraw-Hill. In 1998, he co-authored two volumes of Aerodynamics. From 2000 to 2006, he was Professor of Aerodynamics at the University of Naples “Federico II” and at the Italian Air Force Academy in Pozzuoli. In addition, in 2003 and 2004, he was Professor of Hypersonic Aerodynamics and Space Experimentation at the Naples University. Prof. Savino has worked as the Scientific Head of Research Programs in collaboration with Research Centers and Space Agencies (ASI, CIRA, ESA, NASA). He has also participated in numerous national and international research endeavours since 1989. His memberships include the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA), the International Astronautical Federation (IAF), the Italian Association of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIDAA), the Italian Association of Applied and Theoretical Mechanics (AIMETA), the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), the Committee on Space Research (COSPAR).

Modelling of fluid and material science experiments, surface tension-driven flows, fluid dynamic modelling of residual acceleration and g-jitter, numerical and experimental analysis of thermovibrational convection, coalescence and wetting modeling, fluid dynamic modelling of crystal growth, boundary layers, hypersonic flows, aerothermochemistry, atmospheric re-entry, two-phase flows.

 Biography :

Dr. Ramin Sedaghati is a full professor in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, at Concordia University. He received the B.Eng. and the M.A.Sc degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Amirkabir University of Technology , Tehran in 1988 and 1990 respectively and his Ph.D degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Victoria , British Columbia in 2000. After completing his Ph.D., Dr. Sedaghati was awarded NSERC Post-Doctoral Fellow and worked in the Canadian Space Agency , Spacecraft Engineering Branch, Saint-Hubert, Quebec before joining Concordia University in August 2001. Dr. Sedaghati is currently a registered professional engineer (PEO), fellow of the Canadian Society of Mechanical Engineering (CSME), fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), senior member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and serves as the associate editor of the Journal of Intelligent Material Systems and Structures (JIMSS).

Dr. Sedaghati’s main areas of expertise are: Smart materials and structures specially Magneto-rheological (MR) and Electro-rheological (ER) fluid based adaptive structures; vibration analysis and vibration control using smart materials; passive and semi-active energy absorption systems; structural design optimization and computational mechanics (finite element method).

 Biography :

Y.-S. Ma is currently a tenured Associate Professor and registered Professional Engineer with the Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, University of Alberta, Canada. He teaches capstone design projects, engineering economics and manufacturing processes. His main research areas include feature-based product and process modeling, CADCAM, and product lifecycle management. Dr. Ma received his B.Eng. degree from Tsinghua University, Beijing in 1986, M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from UMIST, UK in 1990 and 1994 respectively. Before joining U of A, from 2000 to 2007, he had been an Associate Professor in the school of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He is currently an associate editor of IEEE Transaction on Automation Science and Engineering, and editorial board member of Journal of Advanced Engineering Informatics (Elsevier), International Journal of Electronic Business Management (IJEBM) and Journal of Software Engineering (ISRN). Dr. Ma actively serves the engineering informatics research community. He started his career as a Lecturer from Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Singapore in 1993, and then from 1996 to 2000, he was a Senior Research Fellow and Group Manager at Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology (SIMTech).

Dr. Omid Gohardani holds a doctorate in Aerospace Engineering from Cranfield University, United Kingdom and dual Master of Science degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Arizona, United States and Master of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden, following a visiting scholar position at the University of Florida, Florida, United States.He is a United States Wakonse teaching fellow, holds more than 15 national/international scholarships/awards and speaks six different languages fluently. He currently serves as a reviewer and editorial board member of several scientific journals and as a judge for the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics student contests. In 2008, Dr. Gohardani was bestowed the title Honorary Citizen of Tucson, Arizona, United States and upon completion of a distinctive teaching program in Learner-Centered Education, awarded a College Teaching Certificate from the University of Arizona (summa cum laude).

 Biography :

I have served in the engineering educational profession for forty-four years. Faculty member in the Department of Engineering Mechanics at the University of Kentucky for twenty years (1967-1987) and promoted through the ranks there. Department Head of Engineering Mechanics at the University of Alabama (1987-1989). Distinguished Visiting Professor of Engineering Mechanics at the US Air Force Academy in Colorado (1989-1919). Returned to the University of Alabama in 1991 and except for a two year appointment as a Senior Scientist (1997-1999) at Eglin Air Force Base, I have been here ever since. Appointed as the James R. Cudworth Professor in 2001 and as the Department Head in 2006. Author or co-author of more than 150 research papers and three books.

 Biography :

Loc Vu-Quoc received the Diplôme dIngénieur in Structural Engineering with Highest Honors (Avec Les Félicitations du Jury) from the Institut National des Science Appliquées, Lyon, France, in 1979. After a brief stint (Summer 78, Summer 79) at Engineering Systems International (ESI), Rungis, France, he joined the Centre Technique des Industries Mécaniques (CETIM), Senlis, France for two years (1979-81), and worked on the development of a finite element code for use in the French nuclear engineering program and in other small to medium mechanical industries. In 1982, he received a M.S. degree in Structural Mechanics from the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago then at the University of California at Berkeley, he was conferred in 1985 a M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and in 1986 a Ph.D. degree in Structural Engineering and Structural Mechanics . After two years of postdoctoral work at Stanford and Berkeley, he joined the University of Florida in 1988, and is currently Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. In 1990, he received the NSF Presidential Young Investigator award. His current research interests are in applied/computational electromagnetics/mechanics, and in power electronics simulation. In 1996, Dr. Vu-Quoc was bestowed with a Teaching Improvement Program Award for excellence in teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses.

 Biography :

Dr. S.A. Sherif is a tenured Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and is the Founding Director of the Wayne K. and Lyla L. Masur HVAC Laboratory. He is also the Director of the Industrial Assessment Center and the Co-Director of the Southeastern Center for Industrial Energy Intensity Reduction at the University of Florida. He served on the faculties of the University of Florida (1991-present), University of Miami (1987-1991), and Northern Illinois University (1984-1987). He holds a Ph.D. degree from Iowa State University (1985) and B.Sc. (1975) and M.Sc. degrees (1978) from Alexandria University, all in Mechanical Engineering. Dr. Sherif is a Fellow of ASME, a Fellow of ASHRAE, an Associate Fellow of AIAA, a Member of Commission B-1 on Thermodynamics and Transfer Processes of the International Institute of Refrigeration, and a Member of the Advisory Board of Directors of the International Association for Hydrogen Energy. He is a past chair for the ASME Advanced Energy Systems Division, the K-19 Committee on Environmental Heat Transfer of the ASME Heat Transfer Division (2003-2007), the Coordinating Group on Fluid Measurements (1992-1994) and the Fluid Applications and Systems Technical Committee (2008-2010) of the ASME Fluids Engineering Division. He is also a past chair of the Steering Committee of the Intersociety Energy Conversion Engineering Conference (2001-2003), ASHRAE’s Standards Project Committee 41.6 on Measurement of Moist Air Properties (1989-1994), and ASHRAE’s TC1.1 Committee on Thermodynamics and Psychrometrics (2012-2013). He also served as a member of the ASME’s Energy Resources Board (2001-2003) and was the Board’s representative to the ASME’s International Mechanical Engineering Congress Committee (2003-2006). He was the Head of the Refrigeration Section of ASHRAE (2004-2008), the Technical Conference Chair of the 2008 ASME Summer Heat Transfer Conference, a member of the ASME Frank Kreith Energy Award Selection Committee (2005-2011), and the General Conference Chair of the 2013 ASME Summer Heat Transfer Conference.  Biography :

Prof Adhikari is the chair of Aerospace Engineering in the College of Engineering of Swansea University. Currently he is a Wolfson Research Merit Award holder from the Royal Society. He received his PhD in 2001 from the University of Cambridge and MSc (Eng) from IISc Bangalore (1997). During his PhD he was the Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Trust scholar at the Trinity College. He was a lecturer at the Bristol University and a Junior Research Fellow in Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge. He was a visiting Professor at the Carleton University, University of Johannesburg and a visiting scientist at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. He has published about 150 journal papers and 100 conference papers in these areas. He was an Engineering and Physical Science Research Council (EPSRC) Advanced Research Fellow and winner of the Philip Leverhulme Prize (2007) in Engineering (given to an outstanding scholar under the age of 35).

 Biography :

Professor Allen obtained a BSc from the Department before moving to Rolls-Royce military engines in Filton, Bristol. After a brief period there, he left to obtain an MSc in fluid dynamics from the Department of Mathematics at Bristol, before returning to the Department to undertake a PhD in computational fluid dynamics. He was awarded a PhD in 1993, and subsequently worked in the Department as a Research Fellow until August 1999, when he was appointed Lecturer in Aerodynamics. In 2003 he was promoted to Reader in Computational Aerodynamics. Later in 2003 he was awarded a five-year EPSRC Advanced Research Fellowship, in the field of rotary-wing aerodynamic simulation, and a Royal Academy of Engineering Global Research Scholarship to fund a long-term collaboration with FOI Stockholm. In 2007 he was awarded a Personal Chair in Computational Aerodynamics. His EPSRC Fellowship ended in March 2009. Prof. Allen is a member of two DARP (Defense and Aerospace Research Partnerships) programmes, the PUMA (Partnership in Unsteady Methods for Aerodynamics) group and the Rotorcraft Aeromechanics group, and a member of the UK Applied Aerodynamics Consortium for supercomputing in aerodynamics. He collaborates with many international research institutes including FOI Stockholm, UTIAS (Toronto), Caltech, and US Air Force Research Labs. Prof. Allen is Chair of the University,s High Performance Computing (HPC) Executive Committee, and a member of the HPC Board.

Prof. Allen is leader of the Computational Aerodynamics research group. His research field is the development of computational methods for the solution of the governing fluid flow equations, and the generation of computational meshes, for unsteady aerodynamics. Specific research areas include steady and unsteady flow about wings and rotor blades, grid generation and deformation techniques, aerodynamic optimisation, aerodynamic-structural coupling, unsteady incompressible flows, unsteady potential flows, high-speed combustion modelling, unsteady vortex methods, and parallel processing.

 Biography :

Alison McMillan studied her Bachelor degree in Mathematics and Physics at University College, London and Masters in Applied Mechanics at Cranfield Institute of Technology, researching Boundary Element Method under the late Dr Ali el-Zafrany. She undertook her Doctoral degree in the Physics Division of Staffordshire University, developing models for the impact of composite panels. She undertook Post-doctoral research at the University of Oxford, Department of Engineering Science, on structural optimisation for vibration response, and in the Mathematics Department at Keele University, modelling friction driven self-excited vibration. In 1999, she was awarded an EASD-ANIV "Special Mention" for this work. Following this, Alison moved to work in industry and spend nearly 15 years at Rolls-Royce in Derby, UK, where she initially worked as a stress engineer. Later she moved into research project management, and strategic capability acquisition. Always very active in research herself, she developed capability in computational mechanics, impact, and modelling of composite materials.

 Biography :

Ifiok Otung received a PhD in Satellite Communications from the University of Surrey, United Kingdom in 1995. He also holds the degrees of BSc (First Class Honours) and MSc in Electronic & Electrical Engineering from the University of Ife Nigeria. He is currently Professor of Satellite Communications at the University of Glamorgan, United Kingdom where he teaches Satellite and Digital Communications courses, conducts satellite link measurements on the Glamorgan campus, runs an MSc program in Mobile and Satellite Communications, and has successfully supervised 10 PhDs and around 80 MSc’s. Professor Otung is the author of over 110 publications, including articles in leading Journals as well as several textbooks such as the 664-page Communication Engineering Principles, which is used in leading Engineering Departments around the world.

Ifiok’s research interests are in Satellite Communications and Signal Processing, including characterisation and prediction of propagation impairments on earth-space paths, design of fade mitigation techniques for EHF satellite communication systems, development of bandwidth-efficient modulation and coding schemes, data analysis and signal processing in communication systems, capacity optimisation for wireless communication networks, and performance of smart antennas in realistic propagation scenarios.

 Biography :

Dr. Dimitris Drikakis is Professor of Fluid Mechanics and Computational Science, and Head of the Department of Engineering Physics.
He has been honoured twice (2008 and 2012) with the William Penney Fellowship by the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE)in recognition of his research in Computational Fluid Dynamics and Compressible Fluid Dynamics. Professor Drikakis is a member of the Fluid Dynamics Technical Committee of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics; Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society; Fellow of the Institute of Nanotechnology; Chartered Engineer; Life Member of the American Physical Society; Life Senior-Member of AIAA; Member of ASME.
He has been the principal investigator of several research projects funded by EPSRC, European Union and industry. He has over 130 Journal publications, 12 book chapters and 180 conference papers.He is also the co-author of the book: D. Drikakis and W. Rider, High-Resolution Methods for Incompressible and low Speed Flows, Springer 2005.
He is the Associate Editor of The Aeronautical Journal, ASME Journal of Fluids Engineering (2004-2012), Journal of Computational and Theoretical Nanoscience, Encyclopedia of Aerospace Engineering, International Journal of Aviation Technology, Engineering and Management; and member of editorial boards in 12 technical journals.  Biography :

Dr. C. Poon received his BS, MS and PhD in mechanical and aerospace engineering from University of Missouri-Columbia in 1975, 1976, and 1979, respectively. Before he joined the Aerospace Engineering Department of Ryerson University as Professor in 2004, he was Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Toronto (1979-1981), Senior Structural Analyst at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft of Canada (1981-1984) and Senior Research Officer at the Institute for Aerospace Research of the National Research Council Canada (1984-2004). Dr. Poon has published 38 journal paper, 74 conference papers, 67 NRC technical reports, 1 book chapter, 1 book, 2 co-edited conference proceedings, and 1 patent. He has extensive collaboration with aerospace companies, notable examples are the research on high temperature fatigue of braided composites with Pratt & Whitney Canada and Rolls Royce, fiber metal laminates with Bombardier Aerospace, laser welding with Bombardier Aerospace and qualification and acceptance testing of the composite arm booms of the International Space Station Remote Manipulator System (CANADARM_2) with Spar Aerospace (now MD Robotics). In addition, he was responsible in the development of robotic laser welding facility at the Aerospace Manufacturing Technology Center of NRC in Montreal.

Prof. Xin Wang obtained his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, from University of Waterloo, Canada in 1997. After he worked in industry for three years, in 2000, he joined the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada. On July 1, 2011, he was promoted to the rank of Full Professor. Dr. Wang is a member of various international professional organizations such as ASME, ASTM and serves on the ASTM-E08 committee on Fatigue and Fracture Mechanics. He has served on the organizing committee or international scientific committee for several and international conferences. He serves on the editorial board for two international scientific journals and regularly as a peer reviewer for over 10 international scientific and technical journals. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the province of Ontario, Canada.

Dr. Wang’s main research interest and activities are in the area of fatigue and fracture mechanics for engineering materials and structures. The research projects involve solid mechanics, finite element methods, structural integrity assessment and material characterization. Research has enabled laboratory testing to better predict the fatigue and fracture properties of actual full-scale engineering structures in aerospace, pressure vessel, pipeline and offshore industries.

Dr. Chun-Yi Su joined the Concordia University in 1998, where he is currently a Professor of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering and holds the Concordia Research Chair in Control. He received his PhD degrees in control engineering from South China University of Technology in 1990. From 1991-1998, he was with the University of Victoria. Dr. Su’s research covers control theory and its applications to various systems including aerospace systems. He is the author or co-author of over 300 publications, which have appeared in journals, as book chapters and in conference proceedings. In addition to his academic activities, he has worked extensively with industrial organizations on various projects. Dr. Su has served as Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology, and Journal of Control Theory & Applications. He is on the Editorial Board of 12 journals, including Control Engineering Practice and Mechatronics. Dr. Su has also severed for many conferences as an organizing committee member, including General Co-Chair of the 2012 IEEE International Conference on Mechatronics and Automation and Program Chair of the 2007 IEEE Conference on Control Applications.

Mike Lipsett is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alberta and Ernest & Gertrude Poole Chair in Management for Engineers. Prior to 2006, Dr. Lipsett held various technical and leadership roles with Syncrude Canada Ltd in operations and in research for twelve years and he was a research engineer with Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. Dr. Lipsett studied robotics at Kyoto University in Japan, and holds a PhD from Queen’s University. His research interests are the reliability and sustainability of integrated oilsands operations, including advanced inspection and diagnostic methods for oilsands equipment and new technologies for bitumen production processes and tailings. He has research collaborations with the NRC, Canadian Space Agencv, MacDonald Dettwiler, Freeport McMoRan, and other companies on systems reliability and mining automation. Dr. Lipsett has served on a number of national research committees, and on boards of two not-for-profit technology organizations. Mike Lipsett is a registered professional engineer in Alberta.

 Biography :

Dr. Seyed M. Hashemi is a Professor at Ryerson University, Department of Aerospace Engineering. His research revolves around developing novel analytical, semi-analytical and numerical models and mesh-reduction techniques in order to achieve higher convergence rates in the dynamic analysis of intact and defective, flexible, composites and which structural elements. Prof. Hashemi has a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Sharif University of Technology (SUT), Tehran/Iran (1990) and a Diplôme D’Études Profondis (DEA) en Mécanique from the Université de Lille I, Flandre Androit, Lille (1992), France. He received his Doctor of Philosophy in 1998 from Laval University, studying numerical modelling of blades and rotating beam-structures. In particular, this work focused on developing a highly convergent Dynamic Finite Element (DFE) method, with applications to the vibration analysis of rotary blades and beam-structures. Later, Dr. Hashemi worked as a research associate in the Department of Mechanical Eng., Laval University and subsequently joined the University of Waterloo, where he worked on a variety of topics related to structural vibration analysis/modelling/control, including vibration control of a turbo-Prop engine, tall buildings. Dr. Hashemi also collaborated with the Kinesiology Department of the University of Waterloo on several projects, namely passive/active vibration control of Parkinson tremors. Prof. Hashemi joined Ryerson University in September 2001, where he continues his research work on Finite Elements, DFE and other numerical methods in structural vibration, design, analysis and modelling. To date, he has (co-)authored over hundred publications, including over thirty journal papers, ten chapters in books and edited volumes and over seventy conference papers on DFE applications in the areas of structural dynamics, vibration, composites and which structures, and the modeling of MEMS devices. Dr. Hashemi is also an Adjunct Professor at the Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Eng., University of Waterloo, Waterloo (ON), Canada, a licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Ontario, Canada and a senior member of American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA).

Dr. Piotr Czarnocki obtained his M.Sc degree from the Faculty of Power and Aeronautical Engineering, Warsaw University of Technology, Warsaw, Poland in 1974. The Thesis concerned modeling of 2D nonlinear flatter of wings. He obtained his Ph.D degree from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Ont. Canada in 1986. The Thesis concerned strength analysis of adhesive joints. In 1986, He became a university teacher. Also, since than he participated in several industry project concerning design of prototype airframe composite components. In 1990-1991, he was a post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Waterloo. Since 1992, he has been lecturing on airframe design at the Warsaw University of Technology. In 2006, he finished his habilitation. The monograph was on delamination of laminates with polymeric matrixes. Currently he is serving as a professor in the Faculty of Power and Aeronautical Engineering, Warsaw University of Technology, Warsaw, Poland and a professor in the Institute of Aviation Warsaw, Poland.

Dr. Satchi Venkataraman is currently an associate professor in the department of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics at San Diego State University (SDSU). Dr. Venkataraman obtained his doctoral Degree in Engineering Mechanics from University of Florida in 1999. He was a research engineer at AeroChem Corporation from 1999-2002. He joined the aerospace engineering faculty at SDSU in 2002. Dr. Venkataraman’s research specializes in the optimum design of lightweight aerospace structures, use of advanced composite materials in engineering and using bio-inspiration to create novel structural designs. At SDSU, Dr. Venkataraman teaches undergraduate and graduate level courses in structural mechanics. Dr. Venkataraman’s mission is to inspire and educate the next generation of outstanding aerospace engineers. Prof. Kang Ping Chen received his B.S. in Mechanics in 1982 from Peking University, China and Ph.D. in Fluid Mechanics from the University of Minnesota under the guidance of Prof. Daniel D.Joseph. He was on the faculty of Clarkson University from 1990 to 1991 and moved to Arizona State University in 1991, where he is currently an Associate Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering in the School for Engineering of Matter, Transport and Energy. Prof. Chen’s research interest include multiphase flows, drag reduction, airplane de-icing, interfacial instabilities and flow in porous media. He has published extensively in highly reputable journals and his works have been frequently cited in the literature. He served as a Guest Editor for a special issue of Theoretical and Computational Fluid Dynamics. Dr A. Benaissa received his Bachelors degree in Physics from Algiers University of Science and Technology in 1982. He entered the Institute of Mechanics and Statistics of Turbulence (France) in 1990 and obtained his Doctoral degree in 1993. During this time, he worked on conditional linkage between small scale turbulent structures and coherent structures in boundary layers. He developed new algorithms in analysing the conditional correlation between a passive scalar and its dissipation in boundary layers and jets. After different post-doc positions in France and Canada, he joined the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department at RMC as an Assistant Professor in 1999 and since 2002, as an Associate Professor. His research involves scalar mixing for gas turbine applications and pollutant dilution in the environment. He also works on transitional Reynolds flows, particularly boundary layers on airfoils at low angles of attack.

 Biography :

Qing Hao received his BE degree in Thermal Engineering from Tsinghua University, China, in 2001. He then obtained his MS degree from the University of Texas at Austin in 2004and his PhD degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2010, both in Mechanical Engineering. Under the supervision of Prof. Gang Chen, his PhD thesis focused on developing nanostructured thermoelectric materials for applications in refrigeration and electric power generation. His work on high-performance nanostructured bismuth antimony telluride bulk alloys not only produced a co-first authored Science paper but also won him the 2008 R&D 100 Award as a team member. After his PhD, he spent a year as a postdoctoral research associate in Prof. Gerbrand Ceders group at MIT, primarily working on novel Na-ion batteries. From Aug. 2011, he became an Assistant Professor in Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Arizona. His research interest is nanoscale energy transport and its applications in advanced materials and nano-electronic devices. His current research efforts include heat transport inside Li-ion batteries, thermoelectrics, measurements and engineering applications of graphene.

 Biography :

Raf Theunissen obtained his MSc degree from Delft University of Technology (TUD) in the Netherlands in 2003 while conducting his research on optical flow measurements at the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics (VKI) in his home country (Belgium). In 2004 he received his Research Master degree at the VKI for research on pulmonary lung flows using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and Particle Tracking Velocimetry (PTV). His work on adaptive sampling and windowing interrogation methods in Particle Image Velocimetry earned him his PhD in 2010 in a collaborative framework between TUD, the VKI and the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). Before joining the Aerospace department at the University of Bristol, Raf worked as a gas turbine development engineer for nearly two years at Alstom Ltd in Switzerland. As of September 2010 he is a lecturer in Experimental Aerodynamics in the Aerospace Engineering department of the University of Bristol.

Dr. Yu Gu earned a BS degree in Automatic Controls from Shanghai University in 1996, a MS degree in Control Engineering from Shanghai Jiaotong University in 1999, and a PhD degree in Aerospace Engineering from West Virginia University in 2004. Upon receiving his doctorate, Dr. Yu Gu joined the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at West Virginia University as a Research Assistant Professor. Dr. Yu Gu’s main research interests are in the areas of sensing and control, with applications to Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (SUAVs). Dr. Yu Gu is currently a Senior Member of AIAA and a Member of IEEE. He has published 37 technical papers and managed 12 funded projects as the Principal Investigator (PI) or as a Co-PI. Dr. Gu also led the development of five generations of SUAV avionic systems, a family of four unmanned research aircraft and over 450 flight testing experiments.
