Naotaka Furuichi's lab is concerned with elucidating the mechanisms of plant hypersensitive cell death of host plants. The lab devotes into the recognition receptors for PiP elicitor and suppressor of the defense reaction in plant cells. Current studies are examining to analyze the interaction of Ca2+-dependent protein kinase, NADPH oxidases(Active Oxygen Generating Enzyme) and suppressor of Phytophthora infestans in a single molecule analysis level in the infected host cells by using the Fluorescent cross correlation (FCS) LSM. Each of projects aims a future bridge between basic science and applied physiological and molecular plant pathology.

He is a Bachelor on Biological sciences (June, 1999), by the University Autonoma of Madrid (UAM)(Mark: 2,7 over 4).He has focused on Botany and Plant Ecology. He has finished his postgraduate period in the Botany Unit of UAM, under the PhD program of Biodiversity and Evolutive Biology. He accomplished his postgraduate research project under the supervision of Prof. Gamarra with the presentation and defense of the work entitled “Study of distribution of Orchidaceae (pro parte) in the Iberian Peninsula and Balear Islands. Analysis of populations and conservation measures proposed for the species that inhabitate the Comunidad Autónoma of Madrid”, having obtained an A mark, obtaining this way the Researche Sufficiency (Sep. 2001). Ascribed to UAM and under Prof. Gamarra supervision, he accomplished his PhD at CIEMAT (Center for Research on Energetics, Environment and Technology), directed by Dr. B.S. Gimeno. His PhD thesis title was “Effects of tropospheric ozone on the relative yield of mediterranean wheat and barley crops. Modulation by environmental factors”, having obtained the mark of Sobresaliente cum laude (A with honors) (May, 2004). He enjoyed a collaboration grant as undergraduate student during my last academic course (5th course, 1998-99) supported by the Education Ministry; afterwards he enjoyed a postgraduate grant supported by UAM during 1999-00 course. Both grants were at the Botany Unit. His PhD was possible thanks to a Research Fellow Grant at CIEMAT along four years (2000-2004) and a Marie-Curie Fellowship at Newcatsle University for four months (Feb.-June, 2003). He was contracted as Scientist Researcher at CIEMAT (Feb. 2005-Sep. 2006), as a continuity of my PhD period. He got his first professor position at the University of Salamanca, School of Biology, Ecology Department, as Teaching Student (Sep. 2006-Jun. 2008). Afterwards he got a Full Professor (temporary) position at the Politechnical University of Madrid, School of Agronomy, Plant Biology Department (Jun. 2008-Ago. 2011). Since Sep. 2011 he have transformed his contract to full time Associate Profesor at the same University and Department.

He has done excellent work on Laser Induced breakdown spectroscopy which in one of the most reliable, quick and eco-friendly technique. Research interests are in the epidemiology and management of rice diseases. Research activities center on sheath blight, bacterial panicle blight, narrow brown leaf spot, blast, the seedling disease complex and other diseases important in Texas and other southern states. Studies are conducted to better understand disease incidence and severity in response to changes in population genetics of pathogens, rice varieties, environmental conditions, cultural practices, and fungicide use. Current research projects include evaluating and identifying disease resistance, exploiting beneficial microorganisms and cover crops for biocontrol of diseases, and evaluating the impacts of fungicides on disease epidemics and grain yield and quality for main and ratoon (second) crops. The ultimate goal of my basic and applied research program is to develop effective disease management tools and to provide economically and environmentally sound disease management recommendations for rice production.

The main goal of my lab is to develop molecular and candidate gene markers, mapping of important QTLs such as fiber quality, flowering, earliness, natural leaf defoliation and resistance to biotic/abiotic stresses in cotton using molecular markers, and localization of mapped QTLs on the chromosome. Furthermore, we are exploring Uzbek cotton germplasm collection with molecular markers to exploit the genetic and agronomic diversity existed in the collection using LD-based association mapping strategy. These all are to facilitate marker-assisted breeding programs in cotton. DNA barcoding of commercialized varieties of Uzbekistan are being performed using “molecular marker technology” to protect intellectual property rights of Uzbek breeders and cotton germplasm collection. We are characterizing the flowering genes in cotton and studying their functions using RNAi gene-knockout technology in cotton tissue culture via somatic embryogenesis. We also are working on cloning and annotating of micro-RNAs from various cotton tissues, including, roots, ovules, and pathogen infected ones. Molecular mapping and characterization of disease resistance (nematode and wilt) genes of cotton is another ongoing research field and interest in my lab. Beyond genomics research, we also are conducting cotton proteomics research to profile a major proteome of cotton with agronomic importance.

She is a population geneticist and my research interests lie in the field of evolutionary and landscape genetics.She like to research and understand which factors, external or internal to the species, influence its genetic make-up. During her PhD,she has worked on conservation of Animal Genetic Resources (AnGR) in Vietnamese remote areas.she used phenotypic and genotypic descriptions to characterize local domestic breeds on five domestic species (cattle, swamp buffalo, goat, pigs and chickens). She highlighted the importance of fine scale sampling approaches for enlighten admixture and hybrids processes. In addition, she has demonstrated that ethnological social structure strongly influences the genetic pattern of local domestic breeds. Her current research aims to use population genetics tools to increase our understanding in dispersal pattern and adaptive capacity of alien invasive species. Despite a founding effect, and therefore a limited standing genetic variation, alien invasive species have successfully established. Understanding such process could provide key knowledge for conservation of small population size as well as for pest control. Model species of this research include two out of three of the world’s worst invasive birds: the Common myna (Acridotheres tristis) and the Common startling (Sturnus vulgaris).
