As a post-doctoral fellow at NIH, He studied under Lothar Hennighausen, a world-renowned mammary gland biologist. His experiences and qualifications gave him a niche from training in three separate fields: 1) programmed cell death, 2) transgenic and embryonic stem cell technologies, and 3) reproduction. His research program at the University of Kentucky is focused on the effects of programmed cell death in reproductive tissues using transgenic, knockout, and tissue-specific knockout mouse models within the mammary gland, testis, and ovary.

Dr.George Perry is dean of the College of Sciences and professor of biology at The University of Texas at San Antonio. Perry is recognized in the field of Alzheimer's disease research particularly for his work on oxidative stress. Perry received his bachelor's of arts degree in zoology with high honors from University of California, Santa Barbara. After graduation, he headed to Scripps Institution of Oceanography and obtained his Ph.D. in marine biology under David Epel in 1979. He then received a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Cell Biology in the laboratories of Drs. Bill Brinkley and Joseph Bryan at Baylor College of Medicine where he laid the foundation for his observations of abnormalities in cell structures.

Dr. Hossam M Ashour was born in Cairo, Egypt. He got his B.Sc. in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the Faculty of Pharmacy, Cairo University, Egypt. He ranked the first in his class of a thousand students. He was then appointed as Assistant Lecturer at the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Cairo University. After spending two years at Cairo University and based on his accomplishments, he was offered a graduate research fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas, Texas, USA. Thus, he joined University of Texas Southwestern Immunology program and got his MS degree in 2004 followed by his PhD in 2006. He was then appointed as a tenured faculty member at the Faculty of Pharmacy, Cairo University, Egypt. After spending a year of research and teaching at Cairo University, he was offered a research fellow position at the prestigious National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland. After finishing his research fellowship, he was offered an Assistant Professor position at Wayne State University, in which he established an active research laboratory that he currently maintains. Dr Ashour has remarkable high-impact publications and is a distinguished editorial board member and reviewer for many scientific journals. He is also a member of the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Society for Clinical and Translational Science (SCTS), Belgian Immunological Society, the World Association of Medical Editors, and other prominent organizations. He has received numerous awards, and has been invited to participate in various scientific conferences and workshops in the US, Europe, and Australia.

Takashi Adachi-Yamada is a Professor of Life Science in Gakushuin University (Tokyo, Japan). He was graduated from Hokkaido University (Sapporo, Japan) and obtained PhD from Nagoya University (Nagoya, Japan) by study of gene and expression of a metamorphosis-regulating neuropeptide, prothoracicotropic hormone (PTTH) of silkworm Bombyx. In Aichi Cancer Center (Nagoya, Japan), he changed the research area to stress responses mediating p38/JNK using the model organism Drosophila and focused on tissue and organ homeostasis in response to abnormal morphogen signaling. After a visiting research in Mike O’Connor’s lab in University of Minnesota, he obtained research grants from Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) as an associate professor in Kobe University (Kobe, Japan) during 2001-2009, and has been in the present position since 2009.

Dr. Paulo Fontes was the Director of the leading, world-renowned liver transplantation program of the Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Institute (STI), University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) for almost a decade. It is one of the world’s leading liver transplantation programs, performing over 7,000 procedures during a 30-year period.  Under Dr. Fontes’ supervision, the program has achieved its highest one-year patient survival rate of 88%. He is a recognized leading academic surgeon, researcher, and educator who has devoted his entire career to organ transplantation. As the Medical Director of the Organ Referral Center (ORC) at UPMC he supervised the center’s activities for more than seven years gaining a unique expertise in organ procurement and allocation, and additionally in the utilization of expanded criteria donors (ECD).  In 2009, the ORC at UPMC was the country’s leading organ referral institution receiving over 9,000 organ donations from throughout the US  Earlier, in 2007, it reached an all-time record 840 transplant procedures from an offering of over 5,000 possible donations.

Dr. Hui Zhang is an Assistant Professor of Pathology at the Johns Hopkins University.  Her research focus is in the development of high-throughput technologies to isolate and identify protein modifications by developing affinity reagents and chemical immobilizations to target protein glycosylation, phosphorylation, and acetylation. To analyze these protein modifications, she is developing technologies for high-throughput quantitative mass spectrometric analyses. She is also applying these technologies to understand the mechanism of protein modifications on disease development and determine protein modifications associated with disease progression for early detection and monitoring therapeutics. Dr. Zhang earned her PhD in biochemistry and molecular biophysics from the University of Pennsylvania, and joined New England Biolabs and Cell Signaling Technology to develop affinity reagents and proteomic methods. Later, she developed proteomic technology to study protein glycosylation when she worked with Dr. Ruedi Aebersold at the Institute for Systems Biology.

Dr. Kaïs H. Al-Gubory graduated from the University of Baghdad in 1973 with a first class honours degree in Zoology and Microbiology. He worked for seven years in the same university as an academic assistant. He has received a PhD at the University of Rennes (France) in 1987. He spent the
next 2 years as a post-doctoral researcher at the Animal Physiology Department of the French National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA). I obtained my Bachelor of Science (Genetics and Molecular Biology) from the University of Malaya, Malaysia in 2001. My honours project was on plant cytogenetics. I then won a scholarship (Post-Graduate Scheme) and furthered my research on the polymorphism of an immune gene called MICA (Major Histocompatibility Complex Class I Chain-Related Gene A) and was awarded Master of Medical Science by the same university. In 2002, I was awarded a Gates Cambridge Scholarship (Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation) and an Overseas Research Studentship to investigate genome-wide transcriptional regulation of chloroplast signalling pathways using microarray technology for my PhD at the University of Cambridge, UK. I then worked briefly for a project from a pharmaceutical company before joining Division of Cardiovascular Medicine for my post-doctoral research. I am interested in genome-wide transcriptional regulation of cardiomyopathy. I have authored more than ten international peer reviewed articles. Dr. Aimin Liu is an associate professor at the Pennsylvania State University, USA. He obtained his PhD from New York University Medical Center, studying the roles of fibroblast growth factors in midbrain and cerebellum development. Lee Niswander and Kathryn Anderson at the Sloan-Kettering Institute and made the discovery that the primary cilium regulates Gli transcription factor activation and proteolytic processing in the mouse. Dr. Wei-Yi Ong graduated with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery degree from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 1985, served as a Dental Officer in the Singapore Armed Forces from 1985-1987, and obtained a PhD in Neuroscience from NUS in 1991. He did his postdoctoral training at the Laboratory of Neurobiology, National Institute for Medical Research, London, U.K. from 1990- 1992; and joined the Department of Anatomy, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, NUS, thereafter. His research interests include: neurochemical changes during excitotoxicity; role of lipids and free radicals in neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric diseases; orofacial pain; health effects of engineered nanomaterials; and applications of electron microscopy and ion beam techniques in medical science. He is currently Deputy Director of the Electron Microscopy Unit, and Chairman, Committee on Water and Nanotechnology at Spring Singapore. He has published more than 150 papers in International Journals and several book chapters.

My research has been focussed on neurochemical changes in the brain after excitotoxic brain injury. This is the pathological process by which nerve cells are damaged and killed by excessive stimulation by neurotransmitters such as glutamate, leading to death of the neuron. My research is focussed on unravelling the complex and changing neurochemical scenarios during the days and weeks after excitotoxicity, with the view of achieving a greater understanding of the evolving milleau in which surviving neurons find themselves, after the initial neuronal injury.

Biography :

Dr. Fusao Hirata received his M.D from Tokyo Medical and Dental University, Japan, and obtained Ph.D. in Biochemistry at Kyoto University. During his tenure as Assistant Professor at Kyoto University, he discovered indolamin-2,3-dioxygenase, a novel enzyme that mimics the anti-tumor action of gInterferon. He moved to National Institute of Health, Bethesda, where his research was focused on modification of signal transduction by steroids. He is co-discoverer of annexin A1 as a second messenger of anti-inflammatory action of steroids. In the Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, he discovered that annexin A1 is phosphorylated by oncogenic tyrosine kinases in signal transduction of growth factors. In Wayne State University, he recently found that nuclear annexin A1, a biomarker of cell transformation, is a helicase with high affinity for damaged DNA and that it is involved in DNA damage induced mutagenesis. Dr. Hirata’s expertise in the field of annexin A1 is documented in over 60 publications.

Dr. Qi Wan research intersts includes the excitatory glutamate receptors and the inhibitory GABAA receptors are ligand-gated ion channels that play essential roles in the central nervous system. My research is focused on understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying the modulations of glutamate and GABAA receptors by intracellular signals in both physiological and pathophysiological conditions. My study aims at determining how these mechanisms mediate the regulation of synaptic plasticity under physiological conditions and why dysfunctional regulations of these receptors contribute to neuronal death and/or neurodegeneration in pathological conditions, and thus providing molecular basis for the development of neuroprotective strategies for the treatment of patients suffering from stroke, traumatic brain injury and neurodegenerative diseases. To realize these goals, we have been employing multiple approaches (i.e. electrophysiology, molecular biology and protein biochemistry) and various preparations (i.e. cell lines, primary neuronal cultures, brain slice and in vivo brain tissues) to test our hypotheses.

After obtaining my M.D. in China, I went to UK to pursue a Ph.D. in neuroscience. I entered the field of retinal degenerative diseases and repair as a post-doc working with Professor Ray Lund PhD, FRS, at the Institute of Ophthalmology, UK. Our main research projects were to (i) understand the underlying pathology of retinitis pigmentosa and age-related macular disease; (ii) develop more effective and early diagnosis of these conditions; and (iii) develop therapeutic approaches to ameliorate these blinding diseases. In 2001, I moved with Professor Lund to the Moran Eye Center, UT, and was promoted as assistant professor later. In 2006, I moved to Casey Eye Institute as faculty. I established an independent research program and was award with NIH grant. Now as faculty member, I am working at Regenerative Medicine Institute at Cedars-Sinai medical center. We have recently awarded with DOD grant using stem cells to treat traumatic optic neuropathy, and grant from CIRM as part of the disease team. The outmost goal of our research is to use stem cell therapy for treating vision loss.

The primary focus of my research work is on the histone demethylase GASC1(Gene Amplified in Squamous Cell Carcinoma 1) in human cancers. I originally cloned the GASC1 gene when I was a PhD student at the Tokyo Medical and DentalUniversity in Japan. Shortly thereafter, as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Michigan Cancer Center, I carried out research aimed at better understanding of the genetic basis and molecular mechanisms for the development and progression of human breast cancer. Now at the Karmanos Cancer Institute and WayneStateUniversity, I have extended my research to study the involvement of genetic and epigenetic alterations, specifically histone demethylase GASC1, in human breast, prostate and esophageal tumorigenesis. Using various cancer model cells, we demonstrated that over-production of GASC1 induces alterations in epigenetic histone methylation and affects the expression of key genes that are implicated in carcinogenesis and stem cell properties in human cancer. Furthermore, GASC1 represents highly promising anti-cancer therapeutic targets; a number of GASC1 inhibitors have been identified and reported. My lab, collaborated with others, are current test these GASC1 inhibitors in breast and prostate cancer in vitro and in vivo, and ultimately develop GASC1 inhibitors as new epi-drugs for the treatment of cancer.

Dr. Caifu has had 26 years of biotech R&D and academic research experiences in molecular genetics and qPCR technology/application development. He is currently Vice President of Genetic Applications R&D and responsible for qPCR and Sanger Sequencing new application development at Life Technologies. Prior to re-joining Life Tech, Caifu was VP of Molecular Biology R&D at Pall Corporation focusing on rapid microbial detection for process monitoring in BioPharm, Food & Beverage, Water, and Medical Research. Caifu joined Applied Biosystems in 1998 where he held positions from Scientists to Sr. Director. He has invented a number of novel assay technologies including TaqMan MicroRNA and CastPCR assays for expression profiling, rare mutation detection and single cell analysis. He and his team have developed a wide range of TaqMan qPCR assays for genomic research, diagnostics and applied markets. He established broad & productive collaborations with academic institutes and biotech companies in microRNAs, stem cells, cancer, SNPs, and CNVs. Before joining the company, he received his postdoctoral training at Harvard Institute of Human Genetics and Ph.D. in Genetics at University of Missouri-Columbia. Caifu is an active member of professional organizations including ASHG, AACR, PDA, and IAFP and the author of 50 peer-reviewed papers, 8 book chapters, holder of 27 patents or patent publications, invited speakers for scientific conferences including AACR, Keystone, qPCR, ABRF and ESHG, invited reviewer for scientific journals, member of the MicroRNA Journal and WJSC editorial board, and winners of numerous awards including the ABRF Best Poster Award, the Best Inventor Awards at Applied Biosystems, the NIH Fellowship, the GOM Meritorious Graduate Student Award, and Research Fellowship & Excellence Award from the Japanese Matsumae Foundation. The data sets I work on include knowledge-based biological data sets, gene expression data, genetic epidemiology data such as GWAS, and next generation sequencing data. Specifically, I divide my current research into three areas: (1) network-assisted identification of candidate genes for complex diseases; 2) network pharmacology approach to the discovery of drug off-targets; (3) Co-regulatory network approach to identifying major regulators.
