Research Interest :

Dr. Yidong Wei focuses on interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, prevention of cardiovascular disease and cardiovascular epidemiology. Especially, he has been interested in clinical trial of interventional cardiology and calcium channel function of cardiac myocytes for basic research. Calcium is key point in progress of heart failure and effects excitation-contraction coupling. He attempts to investigate the mechanism in aging related changes of embryonic ventricular myocytes via patch clamp, calcuim imaging, laser confocal technic and molecular biology. It is identified that the regulated mechanisms of calcuim channel current following aging related changes of embryonic ventricular myocytes. Thereby, it is revealed the mechanism of cell electrophysiology in the progress of heart failure.

Drug metabolizing enzymes regulate metabolism of drugs and toxins, and are critical to the survival of mammalian species. Alterations of these enzymes can lead to impaired metabolism of drugs, leading to adverse drug reactions which can have deleterious consequences in terms of human health. Our long-term goal is to increase the efficacy and safety of drugs by characterization of these enzymes at a molecular level. Our current research focuses on investigating the role of inflammation, infectious diseases and obesity on drug metabolizing enzymes and pharmacokinetics and hepatotoxicity of candidate drugs. Biochemical assays, molecular biology techniques and transgenic animal models are utilized in our studies. The knowledge gained from these studies will have significant impact on developing novel strategies to maximize therapeutic efficacy of drugs and reduce incidences of drug-induced liver disease.

Biography :

As a translational researcher, he has focused his efforts on developing new therapies for patients with leukemia or lymphoma. He has been a member of the Combined International Bone Marrow Transplant Registry Lymphoma Writing Committee and is a member of the ALLIANCE (formerly CALGB) Leukemia Core Committee. He has served as chair or co-chair of multiple ALLIANCE lymphoma/ leukemia trials. He has led a team’s novel approaches for the care of patients using non-myeloablative allogeneic therapy to optimize a less toxic regimen for transplant of patients with hematologic malignancies using haplo-identical, as well as matched donors. This work is currently being extended with post-transplant graft manipulation studies focused on manipulating Natural Killer cell activity. He has led the development of anti-stromal therapy in lymphoma using new antibodies targeting the stromal protein, tenascin, and other early stage clinical studies. Further, He has served on various NIH/NHLBI grant review committees and the ASH sub-committee on Government Affairs. He oversees the development and conduct of all clinical trials in adults with hematologic malignancies conducted in the Duke Cancer Institute. In recognition of this leadership and success in our clinical research efforts, he was fortunate to receive the NIH ‘Clinical Investigator Team Leadership Award’ in 2010 and was awarded by the fellows the ‘Wendell Rosse Teaching Award’ in 2009.
