Fei Yuan received the B.Eng. degree in electrical engineering from Shandong University, Jinan, China in 1985, the M.A.Sc. degree in chemical engineering and Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from University of Waterloo, Canada in 1995 and 1999, respectively. During 1985-1989, he was a Lecturer in the Department of Electrical Engineering, Changzhou Institute of Technology, Jiangsu, China. In 1989 he was a Visiting Professor at Humber College of Applied Arts and Technology, Toronto, Canada, and Lambton College of Applied Arts and Technology, Sarnia, Ontario, Canada. He was with Paton Controls Limited, Sarnia, Ontario, Canada as a Controls Engineer during 1989-1994. Since 1999 he has been with Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Ryerson University, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, where he is currently a Professor and the Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Ryerson University.

Biography :

Neil Collings was born in Stalybridge, England, in 1949. He received a B.A. Honours degree in Natural Sciences from Cambridge University in 1971, and a Ph.D. degree in Physics from Salford University in 1977. He was appointed Principal Research Engineer at STC Technology Ltd. in 1985, where he was responsible for programmes to build optical correlators and to develop ferroelectric liquid crystal SLMs. He moved to the University of Neuchâtel, Switzerland in 1990 to take charge of NSF programmes in Optical Neural Networks, and Nonlinear Semiconductor Devices. He worked on two European collaborations, one to construct an optical correlator with photorefractive memory, and the second to construct systems based on optical MEMS. He later took responsibility for a Swiss industry/university collaboration in Liquid Crystal Devices for Optronic Systems. In 1999 he took up his current research position in the Engineering Dept of the University of Cambridge, working on Liquid Crystal Device development and Optical System design, with particular emphasis on SLMs, optical switches, and 3D display. Dr. Collings is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics.

Biography :

Dr. Yao-Chun Shen obtained his BSc, MSc and PhD in Electronics at Nanjing University, in 1986, 1989 and 1992 respectively. Subsequently, he joined the Department of Biological Science and Medical Engineering, Southeast University, first as a postdoctoral researcher, and then as a faculty member. After that he held various research fellowships at Heidelberg University, Heriot-Watt University, and Cambridge University. Dr. Shen joined the Department of Electrical Engineering and Electronics, University of Liverpool as a Senior Lecturer in 2007. Before this he has been working on terahertz-related technology for many years, first as a Research Associate (2001-2004) at the Cavendish Laboratory, University of Cambridge, and then as a Senior Scientist (2004-2007) at TeraView Limited, Cambridge. His research is focused on the development of novel sensing and imaging technology, and on commercial and industrial applications of such technology. In particular, he has an outstanding track record on research into terahertz (THz) imaging technology, and on the applications of such technology in a range of industry sectors. His past research has led to 8 patents, 3 book chapters and over 80 peer reviewed journal/conference papers that are highly cited with an h-index of 23.

Dr. Minghui (David) Li is a Lecturer in the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at the University of Strathclyde in the United Kingdom. He received his PhD from the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Nanyang Technological University Singapore for work on super resolution array signal processing and systems. Over the past 10 years, Dr. Li has undertaken a wide range of research activities and acquired extensive knowledge and expertise on phased array system modeling, design and processing through investigation of various projects on modern radar, mobile communications, underwater sonar, sensor networks, medical ultrasound, and non‐destructive evaluation (NDE), covering adaptive beamforming, direction‐of‐arrival (DOA) estimation, radar signal processing, deterministic and arbitrary beamforming, array design and synthesis, spatial‐temporal coding and processing, MIMO, coded waveforms, bio‐inspired algorithms, and evolutionary computation and optimization. Dr. Li has developed significant international reputation in these areas and has authored over 40 research publications. His algorithms have been successfully applied to practical problems, and prototype systems have been developed. Since joining the Centre for Ultrasonic Engineering (CUE) at the University of Strathclyde, Dr Li’s research activities have centered around the conception and development of new ultrasound imaging systems with applications to underwater sonar, industrial nondestructive inspection, material characterization, and medical ultrasound imaging.

Arkady Major received his BSc in engineering physics from Vilnius Gediminas Technical University in 1997 and MSc in laser physics and nonlinear optics from Vilnius University in 1999, both in Lithuania. In 2002 he got the PhD in laser physics from the University of Strathclyde, United Kingdom. After this Dr. Major was as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Toronto (2002 – 2007) where he worked on various nonlinear optical spectroscopy and laser microscopy projects. Dr. Major joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Manitoba in 2007 where he is now an Associate Professor. His current research interests are in laser photonics and biophotonics. In particular, his efforts are focused on development of advanced laser sources and optical laser technologies for multiphoton imaging and spectroscopy of biological and other systems.

Patrick Siarry was born in France in 1952. He received the PhD degree from the University Paris 6, in 1986 and the Doctorate of Sciences (Habilitation) from the University Paris 11, in 1994. He was first involved in the development of analog and digital models of nuclear power plants at Electricit de France (E.D.F.). Since 1995 he is a professor in automatics and informatics. His main research interests are the applications of new stochastic global optimization heuristics to various engineering fields. He is also interested in the fitting of process models to experimental data and the learning of fuzzy rule bases and neural networks.

Ugo Reggiani received the Laurea degree (with honors) in electrical engineering from the University of Bologna in 1969. He was appointed Assistant at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Bologna in 1971, Assistant Professor in 1976, and Full Professor of Electrotechnics in 1980. He was Head at the same University of both the Institute of Electrotechnics from 1989 to 1995, and the Department of Electrical Engineering from 1995 to 2001. He was coordinator of the Doctorate in Electrical Engineering from 1988 to 1998. Since 2002 he is Chairman of the Board of professors of the Electrical Engineering Courses. His main research interests concern electromagnetic field theory, analytical and numerical methods for the analysis and synthesis of electromagnetic and electromechanical devices, analysis of switched networks, high-frequency modeling of wound components, electrical characterization of renewable energy sources and currently electromagnetic compatibility. The research activity of Prof. Ugo Reggiani has begun with a theoretical-experimental study on hydrogen-oxygen fuel cells in 1970. Afterwards his scientific interests has concerned frequency control of induction motors, electromagnetic field theory, analytical and numerical methods for the analysis and synthesis of electromagnetic and electromechanical devices and apparatus, modeling and analysis of switched networks, high-frequency modeling of wound components, electrical characterization of renewable energy sources (fuel cells and photovoltaic modules). During the last years his research activity has been mainly focused on electromagnetic compatibility (EMC): electromagnetic shielding, conducted disturbances in ac motors supplied by inverters, compact environments for EMC testing, radiated emissions from cables and printed circuit boards, analysis of electromagnetic interference (EMI) source mechanisms, conducted and radiated disturbances from switching converters, modelling of electrical and magnetic properties of dispersive materials for shielding effectiveness prediction, electromagnetic coupling inside metallic enclosures.

Lucian Baia (born in 1971) received the license degree in Engineering from the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, Romania, in 1995, and the license degree in physics from the Babes-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca, in 1998. He earned the master’s degree in physics of the oxide materials in 1999 from the Babes-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca and his PhD degree in 2003 at the Julius-Maximilians University Würzburg, Germany. Xudong CHEN received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in electrical engineering from Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China, in 1999 and 2001, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA, USA, in 2005. Since then he joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, National University of Singapore, Singapore, and he is currently an Associate Professor. He has published more than 90 journal papers on inverse-scattering problems, material parameter retrieval, and optimization algorithms. He was the recipient of the Young Scientist Award by the Union Radio-Scientifique Internationale (URSI) in 2010. Dr. C.W. Qiu received the B.Eng. degree from the University of Science and Technology of China in 2003, and the Ph. D. degree from the Joint Ph. D. Program between the National University of Singapore, Singapore and SUPELEC, France in 2007. He was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Physics Department of Massachusetts Institute of Technology till the end of 2009, and in December 2009, he joined ECE Department of NUS as an Assistant Professor. He was the recipient of the SUMMA Graduate Fellowship in Advanced Electromagnetics in 2005, the IEEE AP-S Graduate Research Award in 2006, the ISAP Young Scientist Research Award in Japan in 2007, URSI Young Scientist Award in 2008, and NUS Young Investigator Award in 2011. Dr. Changyuan Yu has been an asst. professor at Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering, National Univ. of Singapore since 12/2005. He is also a joint senior scientist with A*STAR Institute for Infocomm Research. He received B.S. in Applied Physics and B. Economics in Management from Tsinghua Univ., China in 1997, M.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the Univ. of Miami, USA in 1999, and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the Univ. of Southern California, USA in 2005. He was a visiting researcher at NEC Labs America in 2005. His research focuses on photonic devices, subsystems, and optical fiber communication and sensor systems. Dr. Yu has authored/co-authored 5 book chapters and over 130 research papers on the peer reviewed journals and the prestigious conferences. He serves as a technical program committee co-chair/member for a few international conferences. He won IEEE/LEOS Graduate Student Fellowship Award in 2004.

Hyunsoo Yang earned the Ph.D. degree in the electrical engineering department of Stanford University in 2006. From 1988 to 2001 he worked at a circuit and system design company, earning a patent award. He worked on long-wavelength photonic devices at Stanford university during 2001-2004. From 2004 to 2007, he worked in the IBM-Stanford Spintronic Science and Applications Center. He was awarded the fellowship in the conference on Magnetism and Magnetic Materials for 2005 and the American Physical Society (GMAG) outstanding dissertation award for 2006. Dr. M. Mofazzal Hossain is an associate professor in electronics and communications engineering department at East West University, Dhaka, Bangladesh. He received his B.Sc. Eng. degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, Dhaka (BUET), and Masters and Ph.D. from Kanazawa University (Japan) in 1993, 2000 and 2003 respectively. He started his career as a Lecture at Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology since April 1994, and served there as an Assistant Professor till April 2008. Dr. Hossain worked at Tokyo Institute of Technology (Japan) as a visiting postdoctoral research fellow from November 2005 to November 2007. Dr. Hossains research interests include modeling and simulation of induction thermal plasma for high performance materials processing, mixed-gas induction plasma. Recently Dr Hossain has been working with loss prediction in dielectric material at microwave frequency and Antenna Engineering. He has published significantly in conferences and journals. He is a member of IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, USA) and IEB (Institute of Engineers Bangladesh).

Dr. Nezamoddin N Kachouie is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Florida Tech. After completing his PhD in Systems Design Engineering, he joined Division of Health Sciences and Technologies at Harvard-MIT as a Postdoctoral Fellow developing micro-engineering and high throughput analysis methods for applications to stem cell research and tissue engineering. Dr. Kachouie then joined Harvard School of Public Health and Dana Farber Cancer Institute developing statistical methods for feature detection in noisy observations with applications to genomic data analysis as well as global warming.

He has attended a number of Information Assurance and Cyber Security related research and education workshops including NSA IA CAE principals meeting, NIST Cryptographic Key Management workshop, Colloquium for Information Systems Security Education (CISSE), and other NSF funded workshops. His research focuses on computer and network security. He has authored/co-authored 15 publications and made numerous professional presentations during his tenure as professor at Hampton University.

Guangbo Hao earned the Bachelor Degree of Engineering, Master Degree of Engineering, and Doctor Degree of Engineering all from Northeastern University (NEU), China, in July 2004, March 2007, and July 2008, respectively. In September 2011, he was awarded the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Mechanical Engineering after a three-year fully funded studying in Heriot-Watt University (HWU), UK. He then directly joined Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University College Cork (UCC), Ireland, as a permanent full-time Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering in November 2011. Yuliya Semenova is a graduate of Lviv Polytechnic National University, Ukraine of 1992. She received her PhD Degree in Physics of Liquid Crystals from the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences in 1999. Between 1997 and 2001 she worked as a researcher at the faculty of Electrophysics at the Lviv Polytechnic National University. Since 2001 she has been with the School of Electronic and Communications Engineering at the Dublin Institute of Technology. She is a lecturer and senior researcher in the DIT’s Photonics Research Center. Her research interests include photonics, fiber optic sensing and optics of liquid crystals. Lun-De Liao received his B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from Chung Yuan Christian University, Taiwan in 2006, an M.S. degree in engineering science from National Cheng-Kung University, Taiwan in 2008 and a Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from National Chiao Tung University (NCTU), Taiwan in February of 2012. He was a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Brain Research Center (BRC) in NCTU. He proposed the world first bio-inspired dry EEG sensors and their corresponding circuit to intelligent image the human brain under the guidance of Prof. Chin-Teng Lin (FIEEE) at BRC in NCTU. He is the co-founder of MINDO Company for products in wearable and wireless EEG device. He is currently a Research Scientist and leading the Neurovascular Imaging Laboratory in Singapore Institute for Neurotechnology (SINAPSE) at National University of Singapore. He is an author of Relativistic Molecular Dynamics Simulation of Ultrafast Laser Ablation, published by VDM Verlag, Dr. Müller, 2008, ISBN 978-3-639-01252-1. He has published over 45 peer-reviewed SCI journal papers, including Nature: J of Cerebral Blood Flow & Metabolism, Proceedings of the IEEE and Neuroimage journals and 10 issued patents. He was selected/nominated for more than 30 international awards since 2004, including 2005 Best Paper Award from National Society of Engineers, Taiwan; 2009 SID Travel Fellowship; 2009 IEEE Intermag Travel Fellowship; 2009 the Best Paper Award from the Symposium on NanoDevice Technology; 2010 Honorable Design Award from National Embedded System Design Contest by Ministry of Education; 2010 Best Paper Award from International Symposium on Biomedical Engineering. In 2011, he also won the 1st place of Young Investigators Awards from the world association for Chinese biomedical engineers for his contributions on medical imaging & bioelectronics domain. He was also selected as an Outstanding Research Award of 2012 from National Chiao Tung University, for his outstanding research performance.
