Dr. James W DuMond, Jr.is the Dean of the School of Science at Marist College and prior to heserved as associate dean of academic affairs for the College of Science and Technology at Texas Southern University (TSU), where he developed the Department of Environmental Sciences and the university’s Proteomics and Functional Genomics Facility. Dr. DuMond received his PhD in environmental health sciences/environmental toxicology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1999, MS in industrial hygiene from Montana Tech, and BS in biology & minor in geology from Eastern Montana College. Dr. DuMond’s current research focuses on the effects of chemicals on genomic stability. This is accomplished by assaying a chemical’s ability to perturb cell proliferation, cell cycle kinetics, and disrupt DNA repair, which lead to developing a biomolecular model that assesses the ability of chemicals to produce genomic instability at both the genomic and epigenetic levels.

Research Interest :

For the last two decades, my research focus has been on how environmental conditions and contaminates are able to perturb the process of DNA repair, which can lead to genomic instability. To date, my research has examined the effects of various chemicals such as environmental estrogens, nicotine, alcohol and heavy metals on genomic stability in addition to examining the effect of simulated microgravity for the same end point. Fundamentally, the process of DNA repair is time dependent and has a distinct preference to repair areas of active transcription over areas that are not being actively transcribed. Hence it is reasonable to conclude that actively dividing cells are more susceptible to genotoxic agents then cells that are at rest. Based on this deduction, it can be further postulated that any condition that “temporarily” perturbs the process of DNA repair during cell division could result in an increased rate of mutation and that inactive areas of DNA will be the most susceptible for mutations. This increase rate of mutation could ultimately lead to the loss of genomic stability through perturbation of gene expression and eventually to the induction of cancer. This is of course a rather simplistic view of mechanisms the involved, which are inherently more complex. However, research to date is in support of this hypothesis. For the future, my research will continue to identify additional chemicals and combination for their ability to perturb genomic stability and shall be expanded to focus on prevention through potential gene therapies whereby DNA repair is up regulated, which is postulated to increases a cell protection against potential mutations.

Mohamed Abdel-Rehim is a Professor in analytical and bioanalytical chemistry with more than 25-year experience (R&D) in analytical and bioanalytical chemistry, having strong background and theoretical knowledge of separation sciences and state-of-the-art instrumentation related to chromatographic separation and mass spectrometry techniques. Dr. Abdel-Rehim received his Ph.D. from the Department of Analytical Pharmaceutical Chemistry at Uppsala University. 1996-2011 he worked as Senior Scientist at Research &Development at AstraZeneca in Sodertalje, Sweden. In 2003, he was appointed as a Professor in analytical chemistry at Karlstad University, Karlstad, Sweden. In 2007, he was appointed as a Visitor Professor at the National Research Centre of Egypt (NRC). In 2011 he was appointed as a Professor in the Analytical Chemistry at Stockholm University. The main focus of his research is inventing of highly automated and integrated sample preparation techniques for the isolation of drugs and metabolites from complex matrices. Screening and determination of drugs, metabolites and biomarkers in biological samples. He has published over 200 publications (scientific papers, proceedings, patent, etc.).

Research Interest :

The main focus of my research is invent of the highly automated and integrated instrumentation for the isolation of drugs and metabolites from complex matrices and the subsequent separation, identification and determination of these analytes. • Analysis of small and large molecules in biological fluids. • Screening and detection of biomarkers in CNS and Oncology diseases. • Quantification of drugs and metabolites in blood, plasma, urine and saliva. • Development of sample-preparation methods for bioanalysis including liquid-liquid extraction (LLE), solid phase extraction (SPE), protein precipitation, solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and microextraction by packed sorbent (MEPS) for plasma and urine samples. • Development of new methods and validation of the methodology for determination of drugs and metabolites in biological fluids using GC-MS and LC-MS/MS. • Improvement of the separation and detection limits for gas chromatography –mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS-MS) by using interactive gases as carrier gas (GC) or as nebulizer gas in electrospray ionization with MS. I have published over 200 publications (peer-reviewed papers, proceedings, book and encyclopedia chapters, AstraZeneca internal research reports, patent, etc). I have supervised more than 18 M.Sc and Ph.D degrees. I have presented my research results in different international conferences as oral and poster presentations. Also, I have been as session chairman in different international conferences.

William Nelson is an organic chemist, and has been involved with Green Chemistry since 1995. Growing up within a military family, Bill (as he prefers to be called) has been able to see many parts of the world, which heightened his commitment to preserving the natural environment and promoting sustainability through chemistry. He earned a doctorate in organic chemistry from The Johns Hopkins University, during which time he studied the synthesis and photobiology of analogs of the environmental carcinogen benzo[a]pyrene. Bill has worked in industry as a research chemist, in government (both state of Illinois and US EPA) in environmental protection and pollution prevention, and in education (teaching and directing research.) He currently is an Adjunct professor in the Chemistry Department at the University of Illinois, while he consults and writes in the areas of green and sustainable chemistry. When not working, Bill enjoys swimming, running, skiing and biking.

Anton Amann is the Director of the Breath Research Institute of the Austrian Academy of Science. Singhal Head Analytical Spectroscopy Section of Analytical Chemistry Division of Bhabha Atomic Research Center, India is responsible for development of analytical spectroscopic techniques for the measurement of traces of various elements in different environmental matrices and samples originating from different chemical processes involved in the nuclear fuel fabrication and other allied fields. He has passed BARC Training School (32nd Batch) from Chemistry stream. He has obtained his master degree in chemistry from I.I.T. Delhi and Ph.D. (Chemistry) from Mumbai University in 1996. Dr Singhal contributed significantly in studying the impacts of natural nanoparticles in the migration of environmental level of transuranic and other trace metals in aquatic subsurface environment. He has also worked for one year in the European Commission Project on "Thorium Cycle as waste management option (EC-contract F141-CT95-011)" at Institute de Physics, Orsay, University of Paris, France. Most of the research work conducted by him is concerned with various aspects of impact assessment of controlled releases from nuclear facilities and concentrates on Environmental Chemodynamics i.e the fate and transport of contaminants and pollutants ( Radioactive and None Radioactive) within the environment. Dr. Sarker is the inventor of the technology and product entitles: “Method for converting waste plastics to lower – molecular weight hydrocarbons, particularly hydrocarbon fuel materials and the hydrocarbon material produced thereby” (US and International Patent Pending). In 2010, Dr. Sarker has received, the International Renewable Energy Innovator of the year Awards 2010 at Washington DC and presented by Association of Energy Engineers (AEE), USA. Currently Dr. Sarker serve as a President of AEE-CT Chapter (Association of Energy Engineers, CT Chapter) since 2012.

Saugata Datta's research expertises are in: hydrogeology, low temperature geochemistry, water resources, envrionmental sciences. Dr Datta studies trace element (nutrient and toxins) and oxyanion migration and contamination in the environment, especially in groundwaters and surface waters, urban air particulates, underground subway microenvironments, and unproductive soil environments using hydrological, geochemical and modelling tools including synchrotron spectroscopy and synchrotron aided material science studies. Dr Datta's expertise is also in geochemical implications of CO2 sequestration studies. Dr Datta studies environmental problems in USA, Australia, Argentina and in other developing countries like India and Bangladesh.

The main goal of research is electrochemical sensors (development and application). New analytical methods are developed based on new types of electrochemical sensors (potentiometric), basically for the determination of some drugs, dyes and surfactants in various samples using plastic, coated wire and chemically modified carbon paste electrodes. In addition, various compounds or complexes are utilized in designing new electrodes for determination of some metal cations and anions exploiting the relevant properties of such materials for the specific aim. Some examples are electrodes for copper, chromium, lead and mercury.

Shanthi Kuppusamy was born in Kancheepuram, India, in 1962. She received the B.Sc degree in Zoology in the year 1982 and M.Sc degree in Environmental Toxicology in the year 1985 from the Madras University, India. She also received the M.Phil degree in Microbiology and Ph.D. degrees in Environmental Science from the Bharathiar University, India, in 1992 and 2004, respectively. In 1986, she joined the Department of Environmental Science, PSG College of Arts and Science, as a Lecturer, and in 2004 became a Reader, became an Associate Professor in 2006. She is having 26 years of teaching experience and 20 years of research experience.Her current research interests include bioremediation of chromium using bacterial species, nanoparticles synthesis, biopolymer production from bacteria, application of RS and GIS in ground water quality and solid waste management. She is a Life Member of the Indian network of soil contamination research, Association of Microbiologists of India, Journal Nature Environment and Pollution Technology, Indian Science congress, National Solid Waste Association of India, Asia-Pacific Chemical, Biological& Environmental Engineering Society (APCBEES). She is member in board of study for Environmental Science in various universities. She is also a member for doctoral Committee for various universities. Her area of specialization is Environmental Microbiology and Biotechnology, Water pollution and soil pollution, Bioremediation and Phytoremediation, Solid waste management, Environmental Biology, Remote sensing and GIS.
