Biography :

Dr. Robert FH Dekker is Director of the Biorefining Research Institute at Lakehead University (Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada), and Senior Ontario Research Chair in Biorefining Research. He holds Adjunct Professorships at Lakehead University in the Dept. of Biology and Dept. of Chemistry (Faculty of Science) and Faculty of Natural Resource Management. Dr. Dekker graduated with Honours in Biochemistry in 1969 from the University of Western Australia (Perth). He then moved to the tropical city of Townsville (Queensland, Australia), where he graduated with a Masters (1972) and PhD (1975) degrees in Microbial Biochemistry/Enzymology/Carbohydrate Chemistry from James Cook University. A two-year post-doctoral term was spent at Albert-Ludwig University of Freiburg in Germany (1975-76) where he studied the biosynthesis of bacterial cell-wall polysaccharides. In 1976, he worked in academia at the University of Natal (Pietermaritzburg, South Africa) teaching Biochemistry, and returned to Australia in 1980, where he worked with Australian industry (Sydney) in Biotechnology (1980-81). In 1982, Dr. Dekker joined the CSIRO of Australia (Melbourne) to develop a program of research on plant biomass conversion (now referred to as biorefining). It was at the CSIRO that he developed the steam explosion technology as pretreatment for the enzymatic saccharification of lignocellulosic materials. Upon termination of the program in 1990, Dr. Dekker worked at various academic centers around the world (Murdoch University, 1993-96; Universidade Estadual de Londrina (Brazil), 1999-2002 and 2004-2006; Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha (Ciudad Real, Spain), 2006-2008) before taking up his present position at Lakehead University in Canada. Dr. Dekker has spent more than 40 years in research (academia, government and industry). He has held Visiting Professorships in Australia, Brasil, Chile, France, Spain and Turkey, has consulted for Australian industry on biotechnology and the United Nations (United Nations Development Fund in Chile, 1982). He is the author of 100 research and review publications, has presented 200 research papers at scientific meetings; national and international, and holds 3 patents on botryosphaeran.

Biography :

Francisco Carrau is Professor and head of the Enology Section of the Food Science Department of University of the Republic. He has also a deep relation with the wine industry as a part time R&D director and Head Winemaker of his family owned Winery in Uruguay. Castel Pujol winery is one of the leaders of the emergence of exports of Uruguayan quality wines in the last two decades. He was graduated in Biological Sciences at the University of the Republic Uruguay, Faculty of Sciences, in 1987 (specialized in Fungal Genetics).  In 2003 he obtained his PhD in Chemistry in the same University at the School of Chemistry in a joint project with the Head of Wine Microbiology at the Australian Wine Research Institute (Dr. Paul A. Henschke) in a topic related to yeast wine aroma compounds and nitrogen metabolism. He had directed 6 Masters and 3 PhD thesis in Wine Microbiology and Aroma Compounds since 1998.  He conducts the first post grade course of Uruguay in Wine Biotechnology in collaboration with invited Professors. Participates or conduct of more than 10 projects about grapes and wine together with the main Institutions of the field in Uruguay (University, LATU, INIA INAVI, IIBCE, etc.). He has more than 40 original articles published and more than 70 research works presented at international meetings about wine.  Since April 2011 is leading the Enology and Biotechnology Group of the CSIC I+D programme of University of the Republic, UdelaR, Uruguay (2011-2014).

Marco Gobbetti is full professor of Applied Microbiology at the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Bari. Biography :

Yu Hong Wei is a Professor of Graduate School of Biotechnology and Bioengineering at Yuan Ze University in Taiwan. His contributions to the academia and bioindustry are numerous, including the fermentation processes development on biosufactants (such as surfactin), biopolymers (PHA) and biofuels (ethanol), and environmental engineering. He has authored more than 50 papers and book chapters and earned many awards and honors, including the Young Asian Biotechnologist Prize 2010, the Highest Research Performance Award in Yuan Ze University. The main contribution Dr. Wei made is in the application of molecular biology methods and biochemical engineering techniques to the production of many novel compounds. Some of these products are now developed by local industrial partners. He is also active in academia-industry collaboration and service works in our science community.

Dr. Dahman has research focus on several emerging areas of technology in the fields of Biotechnology, Nanotechnology, with special interest in Biomedical Engineering. He has commissioned a state-of-the-art research facility at Ryerson to conduct his research projects, which were funded by several agencies including Ryerson University, NSERC and Ministry of Agriculture Canada. In the past five years, Dr. Dahman has supervised nearly 20 graduate student theses projects, and published several peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and conference proceedings. His research team has participated in several national and international conferences in addition to local and regional meetings. Dr. Dahman has long experience in developing medical devices for the health care industry, such as developing and testing novel wound dressing materials for chronic wounds.  His is currently working on designing and synthesizing novel nano-structured biomaterials with focus on improving health care industry. His research activities were evolved into the production of biofuels from renewable resources such as agricultural crops and wastes. He is also actively involved in developing and testing new types of bioreactors that are mainly utilized in fermentations and other biotechnology applications.

Dr. Liu received PhD degree in Plant Molecular Genetics from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) in 1994.  Her postdoctoral research focused in biotechnology and genetic engineering. Dr. Liu has been a research molecular biologist at USDA-ARS-NCAUR since 2002. Dr. Liu’s current work focuses on microbial fermentations of various biomass hydrolysates and genetic manipulations of Gram-positive bacteria for conversion of biomass to biofuels and value-added products. Badal Saha is a Lead Scientist, Bioenergy Research Unit, National Center for Agricultural Utilization Research, USDA-ARS, Peoria, IL.  He was previously Research Scientist, Michigan Biotechnology Institute.  Dr. Saha did a postdoctoral research at the University of Maryland after earning his M.S. (1981) and PhD (1984) degrees in Microbial Technology from Kyushu University.  Dr. Saha has over 30 years of research experience in aerobic and anaerobic fermentation technology and industrial enzymology.  He has authored 160 research publications that include book chapters, review articles and 9 patents; and has given 90 meeting presentations and 45 invited seminars. Dr.S.Poopathi is an eminent scientist in the field of ‘Medical Entomology’ Has over 25 years of research and teaching experience in Biomedical research. He has several years of experience in molecular techniques including DNA-finger printing. He has several DST and DBT projects sanctioned to his credit as Principle Investigator The main themes of his research include molecular biological studies on the purification and characterization of mosquitocidal toxins, B.sphaericus resistant gene identification, identification of novel bacteria from marine resources (sea-shore) for mosquito vector control and in addition recycling the biological wastes from environment and vector surveillance. He also had international collaboration with Institute Pasteur, Paris, France. His contribution on invitro binding assays of mosquitocidal toxins from dried mosquito specimen were useful for transport of mosquitoes from remote areas. He has three Indian patents to his credit and filed another two in recent past. The technologies from patents of biological wastes (chicken feather waste) have been transferred to BioTech International Private Limited (BCIL), New Delhi, India for commercialization of product. He has many awards for his contribution in the field of biomedical research including the “ICMR-Award” for outstanding contribution in Biomedical Research (Malaria, Elephantiasis, Vector Biology, Vector Control and Resistance Management). He has received “Best Researcher Award” for excellence in Professional & Industry (Technology Achievement Awards-2014). Yanli Chen is currently a research assistant at the Department of Chemical Engineering in Auburn University. She has worked extensively in various research fields, such as systems biology, fermentation engineering, sustainable energy development, microfibrous materials manufacturing, catalyst development, and air filtration. Dr. Manoj Agrawal was born in the historical city of Patna located at the banks of mighty Ganges in the fertile northern plains of India. He was passionate about maths and science since his childhood and hence chose the engineering profession. He received his undergraduate education in Chemical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IITM). After graduation, he worked for two years as an automobile engineer for Tata Motors in India. Later, he received doctorate in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering from Georgia Tech. His research involves association of enzymes to their encoding genes and tuning of biochemical reactions in bacteria through genetic engineering. Dr. Aneli M. Barbosa held an Associate Professorship in Biochemistry and Biotechnology at Universidade Estadual de Londrina (UEL), in the state of Paraná, Brazil, from 1982 until 2010, when she retired. She is now a Research Scientist at the Biorefining Research Institute (BRI) at Lakehead University (Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada). Dr Barbosa graduated in Pharmacy and Biochemistry from UEL in 1978, then performed Masters (1984) and Doctorate (1992) degrees in Biochemistry at the Universidade Federal do Paraná (Curitiba, Brazil). She spent post-doc terms at Murdoch University in Perth, Western Australia, (1994-1995) studying enzymes involved in the degradation of aromatic and xenobiotic compounds; and Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha, Ciudad Real, Spain (2007), on yeast beta-glucosidases and their roles in wine oenology. In 2009, Dr. Barbosa was Visiting Scientist resident at the BRI (Lakehead University) studying enzymes from Boreal Forest wood-decay fungi and their applications in biorefining processes. During her activities at UEL, Dr. Barbosa supervised more than 80 students (under-graduate and post-graduate) on thesis projects. Her published research (60 research and 220 conference papers, one book and 4 book chapters), and hold 3 patents on botryosphaeran.

Biography :


Philippe Oger is a senior Scientist of the French National Scientific Research Center (CNRS) working in Lyon. He is a trained agronomist and received his PhD degree from the University of Paris XI in 1995 working on the metabolic interactions between transgenic plants and the soil microbes. The following four years he studied the co-evolution of the metabolism in a host-pathogen system. He has joined the CNRS in 2000 and is now leading a group working on the metabolism of microbes in the deep-biosphere, with an emphasis on adaptation to environmental constraints and mineral alteration in procaryotes, and applications in novel energies sources for the future.

Dr . Munish Puri  is presently  research fellow in Bio-processing, Deakin University, Australia. In 2008 he is the Visiting Professor ITRI (LIMBR), Deakin University, Australia. In 2004 – 2005 he is the  research Scientist IMB, University of Queensland (UQ), Australia. In 2003 – 2008 he is Associate Professor Biotechnology, Punjabi University. In  2002 – 2003he is the Commonwealth Fellow, University of Oxford, UK and Visiting Scientist. In 1998-2001he is the Senior Lecturer, Punjabi University, India In  1997 – 1998 he is the  National Associate, Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTECH), India.

Research Interest :

Dr . Munish Puri  research includes  protein biotechnology which includes protein chemistry, enzyme technology and bio-processing. The major goals of my laboratory are to produce and purify novel therapeutic proteins/ enzymes from variety of sources (microbes, animal and plant cell) and to improve their functional efficiency, specific activity for carrying out transformations of flavonoid/ pharmaceutical intermediates/animal cell product with health benefits. We follow molecular biology, bio-processing and protein engineering approaches for enhancing the efficiency of various enzymes (few eg: rhamnosidases, aspartase, inulinase, proteases, etc)/ proteins (ribosome inactivating proteins, macrophage proteins etc) with therapeutic benefits. We are also working on the biophysical characterization and crystallization of novel proteins to evaluate rigidity of 3D structure which is of paramount importance in immobilization and also for assigning new function to proteins.

Dr. A. Manteca obtained the Biology degree from the University of Oviedo in 2000 and a PhD-degree in Microbiology, in 2005. Panagiotis Kandylis received his BSc in Chemistry (2003), his degree in Oenology (2010) and his PhD (2009) degree in Chemistry from University of Patras. Marta Kisielewska was born in Olsztyn, Poland in 1976. She grew up there and attended the University of Warmia and Mazury. In 2001 she achieved a master degree in Environmental Science. Hereafter she was Ph.D Student at the University and started researches concerning anaerobic digestion technologies for industrial wastewater treatment.  She got a doctor degree in 2005 by defending her Ph.D. thesis entitled “Improving technological effectiveness of anaerobic dairy wastewater treatment in UASB reactors”. She started her professional career in 2006 as Provincial Inspector in Environmental Protection and Agriculture Department in Voivod of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, but her interests have taken her back to the University (in 2006). She obtained the post in Department of Environmental Protection Engineering as technical support specialist of anaerobic processes. Since then she has gained ministerial funds for investigations referring to renewable energy production by anaerobic digestion of dairy waste and wastewater. Results of her researches are published in branch magazines and journals.

Biography :

María del Prado García-Aparicio was born in Ciudad Real (Spain) on 15 December 1978.  She graduated with a BSc degree in Biology followed by a BSc Hons degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology from the University of Alcalá de Henares (UAH), Madrid, Spain.  In 2007 she completed her PhD (cum laude) in the Department of Microbiology and Parasitology at UAH. Her PhD was carried out in the Biomass Unit of Ciemat (Research Centre for Energy, Environment and Technology) and framed within a European Union Project of the Fifth Framework Programme.  The thesis focused on the optimization of the enzymatic hydrolysis of steam-pretreated barley straw for bioethanol production.  Next, she was employed as a Graduate Researcher to compile a Technology Watch Report on Biorefineries for Genoma España Foundation.  María joined the Department of Process Engineering in June 2008 as a postdoctoral research fellow funded by Post Doc. Research Fellowships (National Research Foundation and Claude Leon Foundation).

García-Aparicio research interest include in different research projects related to the field of biomass conversion and utilisation of biomass resources for bioenergy production. The research has been focused particularly on the use of lignocellulosic biomass generated as residue from different sectors (agricultural and food industry) for production of bioethanol in an enzyme-based process.

Biography :

Maulin P. Shah, currently Chief Scientist & Head – Industrial Waste Water Research Lab, Division of Applied and Environmental Microbiology Lab at Enviro Technology Ltd., Ankleshwar, Gujarat, India, received his Ph.D. (2002-2005) in Environmental Microbiology from Sardar Patel University, Vallabh Vidyanagar, Gujarat. He has served as an Assistant Professor at Godhra, Gujarat University in 2001. He is a Microbial Biotechnologist with diverse research interest. A group of research scholars is working under his guidance on the areas ranging from Applied Microbiology, Environmental Biotechnology, Bioremediation, and Industrial Liquid Waste Management to solid state fermentation. His work has been focused to assess the impact of industrial pollution on microbial diversity of wastewater following cultivation dependant and cultivation independent analysis. His major work involves isolation, screening, identification and Genetic Engineering of high impact of Microbes for the degradation of hazardous materials. He has more than 115 research publication in highly reputed national and international journals. He directs the Research program at Enviro Technology Ltd., Ankleshwar. He has guided more than 50 Post Graduate students in various disciplines of Life Science. He is an active Editorial Board Member in 35 highly reputed Journal’s in the field of Environmental & Biological Sciences. He extends his expertise in various National as well as International Reputed Journal as Editor and Editorial Board Member. He is a reviewer of more than 50 highly reputed journals. He was Founder Editor-in-Chief of International Journal of Environmental Bioremediation and Biodegradation (2012-2014) as well as Journal of Applied and Environmental Microbiology (2012-2014) (Science and Education Publishing, USA), Editorial Board Member of American Journal of Microbiological Research, Electronic Journal of Energy and Environment, International Journal of Environment and Sustainability. He is also serving as a reviewer in various journals of national and international repute. He has been an invited reviewer of Nature Biotechnology, Nucleic Acid Research, Current Opinion of Biotechnology, Biotechnology Advances”. Recently he has been appointed as an Editor-in-Chief in RESEARCH JOURNAL OF MICROBIOLOGY.
