Within the more general topic of “Landslide risk evaluation and mitigation”, the performed research activities concerned: • Slope dynamics and morpho-evolution. Surveying, mapping and analysis (with GIS) of slope instability, at local and areal scale. • Landslide activations and sinkholes triggered by either meteoric or seismic events. Effects of landslides in urbanized areas. Evaluation of hazard, susceptibility, vulnerability, and specific risk induced by slope-instability phenomena. Evaluation of conditions of imminent risk. • Geomorphologic, morpho-neotectonic analyses seismic-induced landslides. Large scale landslides, Deep-seated gravitational slope deformations, and tectono-gravitational phenomena, either at macro- or meso-scale. Effects on the environment induced by earthquakes. • Modelling and simulation (mainly through cellular automata) of the spatial-temporal development of flow-type landslides (debris flows, earth flows, debris avalanches). Calibration and validation against real cases, also with parallel computational environment, through genetic algorithms. Sensitivity analyses through genetic algorithms. Susceptibility/hazard mapping. Essentially, studies of Applied Geology and Geomorphology in the field of gravitational slope evolution were performed, by dealing with issues of geo-hydrological defence and, more in general, of civil protection. The scientific interest migrated from issues of landslide recognition and mapping toward spatial quantitative analyses of morphologic-evolutive characteristics, of possible interferences with the urban enviroment, and triggering mechanisms (mainly meteoric and seismic). More recently, the relationshps among tectonic structures and gravitational deformations were investigated, as well as issues of modelling and simulation of landslide phenomena for susceptibility mapping, through innovative and automated techniques of analysis, useful also for managing phases of environmental crisis. The researches, carried out in several study areas of Southern Apennine and Calabrian Arc (and subordinatamente abroad), refer to multi-disciplinary co-operations, involving structural geologists, engineers, physicists, mathematicians and computer specialists. Within such investigations, apart from the realization of research activities, the definition of the project line and the co-ordination of the activities of other members of the group were also looked after. In recent years, scientific contacts with national and international colleagues were also kept, aiming at favouring interactions and cultural exchanges on the research themes of interest, by: organizing conference sessions (as main convenor and/or chairman), editing the proceedings of the conferences, editing special issues in international journals (as guest editor), and in the frame of agreements of scientific co-operation (as responsible or co-responsible).

Dr. Michael E. Brown specializes in Land-Atmosphere Interactions. His Ph.D. work focused on the augmentation of severe storm environments by mesoscale processes generated at the Earth’s surface in the Mid-Atlantic, Midwest, and Southeast regions of the United States. He has worked with cloud-to-ground lightning data in order to better understand hail processes in convective storms, isolate risks to NCAA outdoor stadiums, and understand the role of “tornado-scars” in the enhancement of convection. Michael E. Brown is also involved with educating K-12 teachers in order to bring minority groups into the Geosciences. Additionally, Mike is known for his work with hazard mitigation for college campuses. He has studies the natural and man-made hazards common to higher education institutions and has given numerous seminars on how campuses can better mitigate these threats.

Desheng Liu is an Associate Professor of Geography and Statistics at The Ohio State University. He obtained his M.A. (2004) in Statistics and his M.S. (2003) and Ph.D. (2006) in Environmental Science from the University of California at Berkeley. His research focuses on understanding forest ecosystem dynamics, land use and land cover change, and human-environment systems through the integrated use of geospatial information technologies (GIS, remote sensing, and GPS) and spatial statistical methods. Dr. Leslie North is Assistant Professor of Geography at Western Kentucky University (WKU) and Associate Director of Education for the Hoffman Environmental Research Institute also at WKU. She earned her doctorate in Geography and Environmental Science and Policy from the University of South Florida, where she studied informal environmental education as it relates to karst landscapes and show cave tourism. Other research interests of Dr. North include quantifying anthropogenic disturbance to karst environments, water sustainability policy and practices, and instructional visualizations in formal and informal learning environments. Ted Eckmann received his PhD in Geography from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 2009. He then worked as an instructor and researcher at Bowling Green State University for four years, then moved to Portland, Oregon, where he has served as an Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies within the University of Portland since August 2013. Ted has also received a Certificate in College and University Teaching (CCUT) and a master's degree in Geography, both from the University of California at Santa Barbara, and a bachelor's degree in Economics with a minor in Interdisciplinary Computing and the Arts, from the University of California at San Diego. I have a Bacherlor’s Degree and a Master’s Degree in Geological Sciences at the Sapienza University of Rome (Italy) with a specialization in Environmental Geochemistry and Natural Resources Management and a PhD in Earth Sciences, at the same University, on the use environmental tracers (natural compounds or isotopes) to identify mechanisms and quantify timescales of environmental processes. For more than 15 years I have been working as a researcher and from 2005 as Associate Professor and scientific coordinator on projects, dealing with environmental geochemistry. Scientific coordinator (2000) of the research between the CNR (National Research Council) and National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology Section of Rome, for the measurement and interpretation of isotope ratios in water samples from the fields of Weyburn oil wells (Southern Saskatchewan, Canada), within the project EC WEYBURN. Scientific coordinator (2003) of the research between the CNR (National Research Council) and National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology Section of Rome, for the measurement and interpretation of isotope ratios in water samples from the seismic Aigion (Greece, Strait of Corinth), under the Agreement EC 3F-Corinth No ENK6-CT-2000-00056 in which the INGV-Rome (Dr. F. Quattrocchi) scientific partner repsonsabile for the task WP7 - Geochemical transients, fluid geochemistry. Since July 2009 I am part, as an expert, of the working group established within the III Section of the National Health Council for the examination of hydrogeochemistry and hydrogeological aspects related to the recognition of natural mineral waters. Full suite analysis of water samples is provided for a range of major and trace cations and anions as well as other chemo-physical parameters. The ICP Facility provides high quality major and trace element information on geological, environmental and biological systems, using ICP-MS methodologies. The ICP Facility has the capability to analyse a wide range of sample types including: surface and groundwaters, landfill leachates, rocks, soils, stream and marine sediments, coal, fly ash, vegetation, cement, shells and corals, filter media, hair, fingernails, and many more challenging sample matrices.

Application of the geochemistry methodologies in the characterization of environmental problems. In particular I studied the distribution of elements and isotopes in the Earth systems with emphasis on the use abundances and isotopic ratios in defining the interaction between different reservoirs (mantle, crust, atmosphere ad hydrosphere). I have also related interests in environmental geochemistry and Health. In particular I study the role of toxic trace elements (e.g. As, B and Hg), deriving from hydrogeochemical anomalies of natural origin, on water quality.

Next he attended the postgraduate program, M.Sc. course, (jointly) in the Departments of Civil Engineering, Mining Engineering and Earth Sciences at the University of Leeds, G. Britain, and received his M.Sc. in Engineering Geology and Geotechnics in 1975. He has also a diploma (five years studies) in Civil Engineering at Democritus University of Thrace.
