Dr. Viliam Makis has received his PhD from Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague in 1981. Currently, he is working as a Full Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, University of Toronto. He has successfully completed his Administrative responsibilities as the Chair of the Engineering Science Option: Manufacturing Systems at the University of Toronto in 2000.He is serving as an editorial member of several reputed journals such as Advances in Operations Research (as an Editor), Journal of Mathematical and Computational Science (as an Editor), Central European Journal of Engineering (as an Editor, Industrial Engineering), Journal of Quality in Maintenance Engineering. He has authored or co-authored 70 research articles published in refereed journals, 65 papers published in Conference Proceedings, 100 conference presentations, 3 books as the first author and 6 chapters in books. Dr. M. Omar joined Masdar Institute as an Associate Professor of Engineering Systems and Management in the Fall of 2012; before joining Masdar he served as an Associate Professor of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering at Clemson University, and as the Director of Graduate studies. Dr. Omar also served as a visiting scholar at the Toyota Motor Corporation, Research and Development Headquarters in Japan as part of the Instrumentation and Measurement Engineering Division in 2005; in addition to serving as a post-doctoral scholar at the University of Kentucky Center of Robotics and Manufacturing Systems in 2004. Dr. Anna Angela Barba got her Laurea in Chemical Engineering, summa cum laude, in May 1997, then she gained the Ph.D. degree in Chemical Engineering in 2002. Starting from 1999 she had a CNR fellowship (one year), a post-doctoral grant (2002-2004) and worked at some research projects as external consultant at the Department of Chemical and Food Engineering, faculty of Engineering, University of Salerno. In 2005 she obtained a position as assistant professor in Chemical Plants at the department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Faculty of Pharmacy. The research activities of dr. Barba, developed mainly at the University of Salerno, are focused on the field of power applications of electromagnetic field to the development of innovative methodologies and equipments for microwave assisted heating. From October 2002 to March 2003 she worked as post-doc research fellow at the Technical University of Eindhoven, TUE (NL) where was involved in research activities on pulsed plasma.
Recently, dr. Barba addressed her research activities to the transfer of Chemical Engineering processes and methods to pharmaceutical productions. Her activities, developed in different scientific collaborations and characterized by experimental and modeling actions, are based on the use of electromagnetic energy (microwaves region) in heating processes and ultrasonic energy for liquids atomization (microparticles production).

Dr. Barba was / is scientific responsible and participant of different financed projects. She is co-authors of more than 100 publications: papers on international and national journals, communications to international and national conferences, chapters in books/monographs. Dr. Gaetano Lamberti graduated in Chemical Engineering, summa cum laude, in 1997, then he gained the Ph.D. degree in Chemical Engineering in 2001. Then he obtained a post-doc grant at the Dep. of Chemical and Food Engineering, University of Salerno. In October 2003 he obtained a position as assistant professor in transport phenomena (S.S.D. ING-IND/24).
His didactic activity consisted in seminars in the frame of Principles of Chemical Engineering and Fluid Dynamics courses. He was also advisor or co-advisor for about 60 theses in Chemical Engineering.
Research activities of Dr. Lamberti was developed mainly at the University of Salerno on the modeling of the supercritical extraction and on issues related to film casting and to crystallization of polymers. Recently, Dr. Gaetano Lamberti devoted his attention to the transport phenomena which take place in pharmacology, particularly to the hydration kinetics and to the release of bioactive molecules from pharmaceutical solid systems (tablets), made up of swelling hydrogels. As usual, his research activities were both experimental, to elucidate the transport phenomena, and modeling, to describe the observed phenomena.
He was a referee for the more than twenty international journals. He produced more than 130 papers, of which about 60 are published on international journals.

Osman Taylan is an Associate Professor of Industrial Engineering at King Abdulaziz University. He received his BSc in mining engineering, MSc in Management Engineering from Istanbul Technical University and PhD in Industrial Engineering from Sakarya University, in Turkey. For over 15 years, he has been teaching courses, in statistics, industrial quality control, business forecasting, artificial intelligence and fuzzy logic, operations research and advanced optimization techniques.

Currently, he is also an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at Air Force Institute of Technology of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, USA. He received his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Louisiana State University in 2004, and his MS in 2001 and BS in 1999 in Civil Engineering from Jordan University of Science and Technology. Before joining Texas A&M University, he was a Visiting Assistant Professor at Louisiana State University and an Assistant Professor at Catholic University of America. Professor Abu Al-Rub primary research field of interest is on the development of macro/micro/nano-mechanics-based constitutive models and computational tools that can be used effectively in guiding the design of advanced materials and structural systems. He has published one book and over 200 publications in archival journals, book chapters, and conference proceedings. He has served as the principle/co-principal investigator of more than 25 projects sponsored by various state, federal, and international agencies; he is responsible for more than $10 Million. In addition, he has delivered more than 150 presentations at national and international conferences, professional meetings, and universities including many keynote lectures. Professor Abu Al-Rub is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), Society of Engineering Science (SES), the U.S. Association for Computational Mechanics, ASCE Engineering Mechanics Institute, and the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE). His research at ANL was focused on process development for nuclear waste treatment at DOE sites. Between 2009 and 2012, he also served as an adjunct associate professor in the Department of Biological Engineering at Utah State University (Utah, USA). Prior to joining, he received his Sc.B. (2000) and Sc.M. (2002) in Mechanical Engineering from MIT where he focused on System Dynamics and Control. He completed his Ph.D. (2007) at the Institute for Manufacturing within the University of Cambridge Engineering Department. This research addressed the design and evaluation of Reconfigurable Manufacturing Systems to support short product life cycles and mass-customization. In so doing, novel simulation methods were developed while completing work in over 30 industrial companies in a variety of industrial sectors. More recently, he has worked as an environment and green house gases specialist at Air Liquide Group. There he fulfilled the role of environmental manager for Air Liquides worldwide fleet of production facilities and also served as a technical policy advocate for the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme and Integrated Pollution Prevention & Control directives as applied to best available techniques in the design and operation of hydrogen and syngas production facilities. Since joining MI, he has focused ont he large-scale penetration of variable energy resources in the power and has maintained active contributions in the MIT Future of the Electricity Grid study, the IEEE Control Systems Society, and the MIT-MI initiative. Prior to his appointment at Masdar Institute, Dr. Schmidt was head of the Bioenergy & Biorefinery Program at Risø National Laboratory for Sustainable Energy, DTU. Dr. Schmidt was from 2000 to 2007 Head of the Wastewater Group, and Associate Professor at the Department of Environment & Resources DTU. He was Associate Professor in the Anaerobic Microbiology/Biotechnology Research Group, Department of Biotechnology/Department of Applied Chemistry, DTU from 1998 – 2000 and was acting head of the group during part of the period also. Dr. Schmidt is an internationally well-known researcher and has more than 150 scientific publications, book charters and conference proceedings within the area of environmental biotechnology and he is a member of the different editorial boards and international evaluation committees. His research fields include the following main areas: Principle of aerobic and especially anaerobic microbial conversion; bacterial characterization; production of biofuels from biomass and waste, pretreatment of biomass, production of biomaterials, biorefinery, anaerobic waste water treatment, removal of xenobiotic, modeling of anaerobic process. He has worked with in both national and EU financed programs about many aspects of bioenergy, biorefinery and waste(water) treatment and has a large network of collaborators throughout the world, both at university and industry level. In addition, he has been coordinator in EU-projects/national project or national coordinator and been responsible for business to business (B2B) projects.

His international experience includes technical assistance to the Portuguese National Accreditation Institute (IPAC) for construction products testing and laboratory audits according to ISO 17025, as well as research with the UniversityTransportation Center for Mobility (UTCM – Texas Transportation Institute) to develop of a short-term prediction model for commercial vehicle crossing times at the United States-Mexico border and visiting lecturer at the Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería (Lima – Perú) and Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina (Lima – Perú). He has lectured and published extensively in Europe and Latin America, including Peru, Mexico and Chile.
Dr. García is currently lecturer of wood-based products technology at Polytechnic University of Madrid, and the person in charge of the wood-based products, windows and doors Department of the Wood Technology Laboratory at the Polytechnic University of Madrid. Prior to joining the Madrid Polytechnic University faculty, he worked for eleven years for the Wood and Cork Research Association (AITIM in Spanish), a technical consulting firm for wood-based products and wood building materials. Some of his most relevant assignments include: standard for testing materials assistance; wood building materials factories auditing; windows, wood-flooring and doors factories auditing and technical assistance for wood products factories.

Dr. García is expert in data analysis and modelling. Actually he is the person in charge of researching data analysis in the Wood Technology Laboratory, both with artificial neural networks or statistical techniques.

He holds a B.S. and a Ph.D. in Wood Technology from the Polytechnic University of Madrid.

He has supervised 14 post-graduation memories (Magister). He has supervised more than 40 graduation memories (Engineer and Technician) in electrical engineering and Computing. He had an incentive award from ‘’ Centre de Développement des Énergies Renouvelables- CDER”. He was awarded for the best publication in physics in Algeria from the ANDRU agency in 2008. He is the Head of the research team: “Photovoltaic Systems & Devices”. He is reviewer in many Journals as: Solar Energy, Conversion Energy and Management Journal, Electronics Journal, International Journal of Engineering Innovations and Research, Measurement, International Journal of Electronics, Energy and Buildings and Journal of Applied Electrochemistry. He was the President of the Scientific Committee at the Electrical Engineering Department- Amar Telidji University of Laghouat for two years. He was the Vice Dean of Research and Post-graduation at the Faculty of Sciences and Engineering. University of Laghouat for two years. Biography :

Nuno Couto graduated in Energy Engineering from University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD) in 2010 among the top students in his class. During that year he also won a research grant funded by The Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). At the end of 2012 he completed his master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the same University with multiple articles in international journals and several national and international conferences. The conducted work allowed him to have the highest grade thesis in recent years. Early in 2013 N. Couto won a PhD fellowship with a final score within the top 10 in the entire country. He moved from UTAD to University of Porto where he currently attends his 4th year of PhD in Mechanical Engineering. In this short time frame N. Couto has published 19 articles in international journals and 14 international conferences becoming a lead researcher in gasification. Of these, the majority was published in major energy high impact factor journals including Energy & Fuels, Applied Thermal Engineering, Renewable Energy, Energy Conversion Management, International Journal of Hydrogen Energy and Energy, among others. His paper entitle “Syngas combustion analysis using an experimental and numerical approach” was awarded by ASME 2014 Power Conference. Just 8 studies were selected worldwide and his was the only selected from Europe. Following his personal interest and work developed in computational fluid dynamics N. Couto started to take a second master’s degree at the University of Madrid in Numerical Simulation in Engineering with ANSYS. At this point, after years working in numerical simulation his skills are among the very best of the field. Lately, the focus has been shared between assistance in several classes in UTAD and the involvement in numerous national and international research projects as team/core member. Nevertheless, contribution to the field is also a key interest having refereed dozens of peer reviewed international journals and conferences which resulted in the invitation to be a Guest Editor for the prestigious Energies Journal.

With a long-standing collaboration with Prof. Craig J.
