Biography :

Dr Azam Ali holds (BSc (hons.) & MSc) in Chemistry (Dhaka, Bangladesh) and PhD degree in Polymer & Materials Science and Engineering (USM) in the year 2000. He worked as a postdoctoral/research fellow in a numerous institutes e.g. POSTECH (South Korea) and University of North Carolina, Charlotte, UNCC (USA). Prior to his present position, he worked over 10 years in New Zealand Govt. research organisation (AgResearch) as a senior scientist, and leads biomaterials and medical devices research team at Lincoln, Christchurch, New Zealand. He is recognised as an international biomaterial scientist, have been working over 21 years in biomaterials areas, who has published more than 42 peer-reviewed articles and one book chapter. At present he holds 18 international patents and patent specifications. Dr. Azam is working as a senior lecturer and Director, Bioengineering program, and leads Biomaterials, Bioengineering and Regenerative Medicine research team in the Department of Applied Sciences, the University of Otago (Dunedin). He specialises in biomaterials (including biologic tissues), Bioengineering design, developing medical devices/technologies and nanoscience & nanotechnology. The innovative technology pioneered by Dr Azam uses low value protein sources from the New Zealand wool industry to create novel medical devices (e.g. wound care, bone implants, soft tissues, and bioabsorbable suture). Three of his chronic/diabetics wound care medical products have been commercialised and are manufactured in New Zealand for use as dressings (matrix), hydrogel, foam, particularly for chronic wounds management. They have already granted all regulatory (ISO 13485, FDA, TUV, TGA) approval and currently commercialised over 17 countries including in the USA, EU, AU & NZ. He was awarded the Bayer Year of the Innovators Awards 2010 (namely New Zealand Innovator Awards) or his significant science contribution to the Health and Science sectors.

Professor Ramesh K. Agarwal is the William Palm Professor of Engineering and the director of Aerospace Engineering Program and Aerospace Research and Education Center at Washington University in St. Louis from 1994 to 200. He was the Sam Bloomfield Distinguished Professor and Executive Director of the National Institute for Aviation Research at Wichita State University. Dr. Agarwal received Ph.D in Aeronautical Sciences from Stanford University in 1975, M.S. in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Minnesota in 1969 and B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India in 1968. Professor Agarwal has worked in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), renewable energy systems and nanotechnology. He is the author and coauthor of over 300 publications and serves on the editorial board of fifteen journals. Professor Chung obtained his B. S. in Chemistry from Chung Yuan University (Taiwan) in 1976. He spend two years as a Research Scientist at Institute for polymers and Organic Solids (with Professor Alan J.Heeger, Nobel Laureate), University of California, Santa Barbara. Between 1984 and 1989, he was a Senior Research Staff in Corporate Research, Exxon Company. In 1989 he joined the faculty of the Pennsylvania State University as an associate professor and became professor of Polymer Science in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering in 1993. He is author of more than 240 publications, including 2 books and 56 US and international patents.

Dr. Zhitao Kang is a research engineer in the Microelectronics and Nanotechnology Group at Georgia Tech Research Institute’s Electro-Optical Systems Laboratory.Adjunct Professor in School of Materials Science and Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology. Dr. Kang was employed as a faculty member in Non-Equilibrium Materials Research Institute and then a lecturer in School of Materials Science and Engineering at CSU. In 2003 he started his Ph.D. study in School of Materials Science and Engineering at Georgia Tech. After graduation in fall 2006 he continued to work as a postdoctoral fellow and soon was employed as a research engineer at GTRI.

Dr. Dimitris S. Argyropoulos is a Professor and Finland Distinguished Professor of Chemistry. The work of his group focuses on the organic chemistry of wood components and the development of new chemistry for transforming the carbon present in our trees toward producing valuable chemicals, materials and energy. Dr. Argyropoulos received his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from McGill University in Montreal, Canada where he also served as a PAPRICAN professor with the Chemistry department. His teaching is primarily related to wood chemistry, biomaterial characterization, carbohydrate, lignin and polymer chemistry. Dr. Argyropoulos is a Fellow of the International Academy of Wood Science and a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Chemistry. In addition to being a member to a number of professional societies (ACS, TAPPI, PAPTAC), Dr. Argyropoulos serves the editorial boards of five scientific journals as well the board of the International Lignin Institute and a number of International Scientific committees. He has also served as the Division Chair, and Secretary of the Cellulose and Renewable Materials of the American Chemical Society.

Recent research in his group emerges from a significant finding that wood can be dissolved in Ionic Liquids, allowing for the creation of a variety of novel processing platforms for producing new materials, chemicals and energy. In addition, his group develops new methods based on organic chemistry, NMR spectroscopy and catalysis to modulate, direct and understand the transformations of wood biopolymers during industrial transformations such pulping, bleaching and bio-processing.

Biography :

Harry Ruda is Director of the Centre for Advanced Nanotechnology, the Stanley Meek Chair in Nanotechnology, and Professor of Applied Science and Engineering at the University of Toronto. The Centre is Canada’s first nanotechnology centre. From 1984 to 1989 he was a senior scientist at 3M Corporation, developing some of the first models for electronic transport and optical properties of wide bandgap II-VI semiconductors, while being a key member of the blue laser team. From 1982 to 1984 he developed one of the first theories for electron transport in selectively doped two dimensional electron gas heterostructures while working as an IBM postdoctoral fellow. From 1979 to 1982 he worked on optical and transport properties of II-VI based infrared detector materials and obtained his PhD from MIT in 1982. Professor Ruda has published over 220 publications in international refereed journals (with over 2,200 SCI citations), has co-authored 4 books and has 14 patents.

Professor Ahmed M. Safwat received his M.Sc. from Queen′s University, where he completed his Ph.D. work in two years. He joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Queen’s University in June 2003. He is the Founding Director of the Laboratory for Advanced Wireless Networks (AWN). Professor Safwat was the Co-Chair of the International Conference on Wireless Networks, Communications, and Mobile Computing (WirelessCom) 2005. He also served as the Publicity Co-Chair for the IEEE International Workshop on Information Assurance in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNIA) 2005. He was the Co-Chair of IEEE GLOBECOM 2004 Wireless Ad hoc and Sensor Networks. In addition, he was the Chairman of the IEEE IPCCC 2004 Workshop on Energy-Efficient Wireless Communications and Networks (EWCN). He was also the Chairman of the IEEE VTC 2003 Wireless Ad hoc and Sensor Networks Symposium. He also served as the Co-Chair of the Technical Program for the Workshop on Energy-Efficient Wireless Communications and Networks (EWCN) in conjunction with IEEE IPCCC 2003. He serves on the editorial and advisory boards of many international journals and conferences, respectively. Professor Safwat has been tasked to lead cutting-edge projects in the field of wireless networks, nanotechnology, and bioelectronics. He is the inventor of many landmark technologies, including PA-VBS, Q-GSL, ECPS, E2LA, A-Cell, ACA, ECCA, MTCD, ASRS, ISRS, PIMCM, R-MIMD, X-MIMD, and E-MIMD, among others.

Sergei L. Dudarev, was born in Molodechno, Belarus, grew up in Tbilisi, Georgia, and studied theoretical and mathematical physics at Moscow Engineering Technical University, receiving MSc and PhD degrees in Theoretical Nuclear Physics in 1983. In 1989 was awarded a Moscow Komsomol Prize for outstanding scientific achievements and a Royal Society Research Fellowship in 1991. Moved to Oxford, UK in 1992, becoming a Fellow of Linacre College in 1995 and a Lecturer at Materials Department in 1997. From 1999 S.L. Dudarev is Head of Materials Group at UK Atomic Energy Authority at Culham, south of Oxford. Held Visiting Professorships at the University of Hong-Kong and at Hong-Kong Polytechnic University, and is a Visiting Professor at the Department of Physics, Imperial College London, and Visiting Professor in Materials at the Department of Materials, University of Oxford. Professor Aibing Yu specialized in process metallurgy, obtaining BEng in 1982 and MEng in 1985 from Northeastern University, PhD in 1990 from the University of Wollongong, and DSc in 2007 from the University of New South Wales (UNSW). Since 1992, he has been with UNSW School of Materials Science and Engineering. Currently he is Scientia Professor and ARC Federation Fellow, directing a world-class research facility “Simulation and Modelling of Particulate Systems”. He is a world-leading scientist in particle/powder technology and process engineering, has authored about 600 publications (including >320 papers collected in the Web of Science), and delivered many invited plenary/keynote presentations at many international conferences. Prof. Blau studied Physics and Music at the University of Regensburg, Germany. Following completion of his Diplomarbeit in 1979 and doctoral thesis in 1983 under the supervision of Prof. A. Penzkofer in the area of ultrafast laser physics and spectroscopy and period at Siemens Research Laboratories in Erlangen, he joined Prof. D.J. Bradley, FRS at Trinity College Dublin in 1983 as British Petroleum Venture Research Fellow. In 1985 he was appointed as Lecturer in the Science of Materials / Physics at Trinity and promoted to Associate Professor in 1991. Since 2003 he is Professor (Personal Chair) of Physics of Advanced Materials. From 1992-2007 he was Research Director of the Materials Ireland Polymer Research Centre at Trinity, a centre providing research and development services to Irish polymer industry. Over the years, he has participated in numerous College, national and international working groups and committees and was Head of Department of Trinity Physics from 1998 – 2003.

Dr. Miljenko Math, was born at Zagreb on 08. January, 1949. He completed the primary education as well as mathematical gymnasium in 1967 in Zagreb. That same year he enrolled the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture, University of Zagreb, and graduated in 1974 at the Design Department, course Thermo mechanics. Yong Peng joined the School of Physical Science and Technology at Lanzhou University (China) in 2010, moving from the University of Sheffield (UK) as a research associate. He is a Distinguished Professor of Lanzhou University in Condensed Matter Physics, the director of Field Emission Gun High-resolution Transmission Electron Microscope Facility of Lanzhou University. Dr. Peng received his Ph.D in Condensed Physics from the University of Salford (UK) in 2004. He has authored/co-authored over 80 publications and conference papers. Biography :

Dr. Guozhen Shen received his Ph.D. degree in Chemistry from University of Science and Technology of China in 2003. He conducted his postdoctoral research at Hanyang University, Korea in 2004 and then joined National Institute for Materials Science, Japan (2005–2007) and University of Southern California. Currently, he is a professor in Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics (WNLO) and Huazhong Univeristy of Science and Technology (HUST). He is the author or co-author of more than 130 research articles in peer reviewed journals and 7 book chapters. His most recent research interests include the synthesis and characterization of one-dimensional nanostructures and their device applications in electronics and optoelectronics. Dr. Guozhen Shen is the Executive Editor of Frontiers of Optoelectronics in China, an assistant editor of Nanoscale Research Letters, a Guest Editor for the special issue on “Nanowires” published in Science of Advanced Materials

Hyung Hee Cho was born in Korea in 1959. He received the Ph.D. degree in mechanical engineering from University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, in 1992. Since 1995, he has been with the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Yonsei University, Seoul, Korea, where he is currently a Full Professor in the School of Mechanical Engineering. He is currently a Director of the Low Observable Research Center, an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Fluid Machinery and Systems, and an Editorial Board Member of the Advances in Mechanical Engineering and the JP Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer. His research interests include macroscopic applications of nanostructured materials for heat transfer, surface modification, energy conversion, etc.
Dr. Cho is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, a Scientific Council Member of the International Centre for Heat and Mass Transfer, and an Associate Member of the Korea Academy of Science and Technology.

Guy M. Genin is Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Material Science at Washington University in St. Louis, and a member of Washington University’s Center for Materials Innovation and Center for Innovation in Neuroscience and Technology. Prof. Genin’s training includes a doctorate in solid mechanics from Harvard University under the guidance of John W. Hutchinson, post-doctoral studies at Cambridge University under the guidance of David Cebon, and further post-doctoral studies at Brown University under the guidance of Allan F. Bower. Prof. Genin also holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Case Western Reserve University, where he studied under the guidance of Roberto Ballarini.

Dr. Shi received his Ph.D. degree in Materials Science from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 2006. He then spent two years in North Carolina State University as a Postdoctoral Research Associate. Dr. Donglei (Emma) Fan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin since January 2010. She received her bachelors degree in chemistry from the Department of Intensive Instruction, an honor program for gifted youth, in Nanjing University (NJU) in 1999, masters (2003) and doctorate (2007) degrees in Materials Science and Engineering from the Johns Hopkins University (JHU). She also obtained another masters degree in Electrical Engineering from JHU in 2005. Between 2007 and 2009, she was a Postdoctoral Fellow at JHU. Dr. Fan has received several scholarships, such as a NSF Fellowship at the California Institute of Technology Summer Program, Postdoctoral Fellowship in JHU, Scholarship for Excellency several times from NJU, and early admission to NJU with Freshman Scholarship waived of National College Examination. Dr. Fans research aims at creating unique methods to bridge the fabrication of nanomaterials with their applications in electronics, biology, MEMS/NEMS, and energy devices. Extensive researches on nanomaterials have revealed that they often exhibit unique electronic, mechanical, optical and magnetic properties. In most cases, these properties are far superior to those of the bulk materials due to the Quantum Confinement Effect and large surface areas. However, the applications of nanomaterials are still largely hindered by the difficulties in manipulation and integration of them into useful devices. Dr. Fan invented a powerful and non-destructive technique, called "Electric Tweezers", for the manipulation of nanoentities in suspension by electric fields. The manipulation includes transport and rotation that can lead to separation, concentration, joining and assembly etc. This work has spurred a series of publications on major journals including Nature Nanotechnology, Physical Review Letters, Applied Physics Letters, as well as two pending patents. Her work was widely reported by the academic news media such as Nano Today, MRS Bulletin, PhysOrg.com, APS news, World Gold Council, and had been selected multiple times by Virtual Journals of Nanoscale Science and Technology.
Dr. Fan has given over ten invited talks including SPIE meeting, Washington University in St. Louis, University of California at Berkeley, Stanford University, Palo Alto Research Laboratory and the University of Texas at Austin. In her spare time, she enjoys gardening, hiking, and reading.

Wei Gao received his B.S. degree (2007) from Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST), and his M.S. degree (2009) in State Key Laboratory of Precision Measurement Technology and Instruments from Tsinghua University (THU) in China. Yugang Sun received B.S. and Ph.D degrees in chemistry from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in 1996 and 2001, respectively. He is currently a staff scientist for the Center for Nanoscale Materials at Argonne National Laboratory. Dr Sun is the 2007 recipient for The Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) and DOE’s Office of Science Early Career Scientist and Engineer Award. His current research interests focus on developing novel approaches for the synthesis of a wide range of nanostructures, including metal nanoparticles with well-controlled morphologies, single-crystal semiconductor nanostructures with mechanical flexibility, and metal/semiconductor nanocomposites with multiple functionalities. The as-synthesized nanomaterials are also explored in photocatalysis, sensing, and electrochemical energy storage.

Dr. Hussein holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering. Currently, he is an Associate Professor in the School of Chemical Engineering, Universiti Sains Malaysia.  Dr. Hussein has strong experience in the synthesis, surface modification, and characterisation of carbon nanotubes. He is a principal investigator of many research projects. He has managed to publish over 110 scientific articles, two book chapters, two patents and given talks in invited seminars. Dr. Hussein has received more than 50 national and international awards. In 2005, Dr. Hussein was awarded a Gold Medal for the project “Production of Carbon Nanotubes and Hydrogen” at the 33rd International Exhibition of Inventions, New Techniques and Products held in Geneva, Switzerland.  In the same exhibition, he received a special prize in the field of carbon nanotubes from The Technical Culture-Croatia. For his current research interest, Dr. Hussein was awarded a Gold Medal and “The World Invention Award” for the project entitled “Development of New Synthetic Composite for Injectable Bone Replacement Material” at the British Inventors Society/ The 9th British Invention Show/ 13 – 16th October 2009 in Alexandra Palace, London. Recently, Dr. Hussein was also awarded a Gold Medal for the project entitled “Synthesis of Novel 3D Scaffold for Human Skin Cells Cultivation: An Advance in Skin Trade” at the British Inventors Society/ The 11th British Invention Show/ 19 – 22nd October 2011 in Old Spitalfields Market E1. Dr. Hussein has established a vivid international research group that now focuses on injectable bone replacement materials. Currently, he is an editor for 10 international journals and nominated as Guest Editor for two international journals. He is also grant assessor and reviews articles for 24 different journals.

Dr. Kafil M. Razeeb received the B.Sc. (with honors) and M.Sc. degrees, both in Applied Physics and Electronics, from the University of Dhaka, Dhaka, Bangladesh, in 1997 and 1999, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree in physics from University of Limerick, Limerick, Ireland, in 2003. In 2003, he joined NMRC (now Tyndall National Institute) as a Post Doctoral Fellow. In 2005, he became a Research Scientist and later Staff Researcher within the Microelectronics Applications Integration group in Tyndall National Institute, Cork, Ireland. He is principal investigator of several Enterprise Ireland and EU funded projects from Tyndall and team leader of Nano-Interconnection group. Razeeb is author of over 50 technical articles and conference papers, 1 book and 6 book chapters and filed 1 patent. His current research focuses on the broad area of nanowires/ nanotubes, nanoheterostructures and nanocomposite materials, specifically on nano-sensors, nanomaterials for energy, 3D interconnection and integration techniques, nano-interconnection, thermal interface/ thermoelectric materials, electromagnetic and photocatalytic properties of novel nano-materials. Dr. Razeeb became member of IEEE in 2004 and then became senior member in 2011. He is also Chartered Physicist and Member of Institute of Physics and recipients of a Higher Education Authority, Ireland Scholarship for pursuing his Ph.D. (2000–2003). During his M.S. study (1998–1999), he received the Research Fellow award from Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of Bangladesh based on excellence in research work.

Dr. Bobby Kannan Mathan is currently the Head of Chemical Engineering at James Cook University (JCU), Australia. He completed his PhD in 2005 at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay in India.  He received a DAAD scholarship to carry out part of his PhD work at the University of Erlangen in Germany. He won the Best PhD Thesis Award from the National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE), India Section. Before joining JCU as an academic, he worked as a post-doctoral fellow at the Helmholtz Research Centre in Germany and Monash University in Australia. Salah A.M. Elmoselhy holds MS in mechanical design and production engineering, MBA in international manufacturing systems, and PhD in Mechanical Engineering. He professionally holds the titles of Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) and Certified Project Manager (CPM). He has ten years of industrial experience in CAD/CAM and robotised manufacturing systems. His research experience covers in related-diversification the four main research themes in Mechanical Engineering: design, materials science, manufacturing, and operations management. He is the innovator of the Hybrid Micro-composite E-springs, the Directional Load Ratio theory in laminated composite structures, and the Hybrid Lean-Agile Manufacturing System. Dr. Bingkun K. Chen is Assistant Professor of Medicine, Director of the Neural Component of the Biomaterials Characterization & Histology Core Laboratory, and Supervisor in Department of Neurology, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN. Dr. Chen graduated with an M.D. in China, further studied in Germany, later received his Ph.D. in Japan, and recently earned his M.B.A. in the United States. Dr. Chen focus on spinal cord injury and regeneration. He developed and optimized two axonal tracing techniques, i. e. Bidiretional axonal tracing with DiI and DiO, and retrograde axonal tracing with Fast Blue (FB). By using tissue engineered technology with biodegradable polymer scaffolds loaded with growth-promoting cells (schwann cells, SCs) to bridge the transection, it might aim to shift the balance in the injured spinal cord towards healing and functional regeneration. Dr. Chen is currently serving on the Mayo Diversity and Inclusion Committee and Mayo Research Safety Committee. Dr. Chen also serves as the Chair of Chinese Student & Scholar Association at Mayo and Chair of Chinese Mayo Employee Resource Group. Dr. Chen has authored and published more than 50 peer-reviewed articles; in addition he has served as Editor, Associate editor and Editor-in-chief for a numerous books and bulletins, and as Reviewer for a number of journals in neuroscience.
