Biography :

Professor Michael Silbermann (D.M.D.) PhD and certified specialist in oral and maxillo‑facial surgery) served for over 20 years as the Head of the Laboratory for Musculoskeletal Research, Chairman of the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology and as the Dr. Irving and Jeannette Benveniste Chair in Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine in the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, Haifa, Israel. Also served as the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the Technion and as the Chief Scientist at the Ministry of Health, Jerusalem, Israel. He has gained international reputation through multinational research projects related to bone and cartilage development, metabolism, senescence. These have been funded by Israel, U.S. and German research agencies: Israel National Council for Research and Development, Ministry of Science; Chief Scientist Office in the Ministries of Health and Commerce and Industry; NIH, USAID (MERC), and BSF in the United States; BMBF, GBF and GSF in Germany. Large financial support was obtained also from industries: Laser Industries, Israel; Teva Pharmaceutical Industry, Israel; General Biotechnologies, Israel; Diagnostic Technologies, USA; Nordisc Gentofte, Denmark; Surgical Biopolymer Materials, France; Medical Bracing Systems, Israel. He has been awarded three European Commission Grants, #70786, #71329, and #71395, and research fellowship grants by the American Association of Dental Research, The Fogarty Foundation (Bethesda, MD), EMBO, Max Planck Society, and Japan Society for the Promotion of Sciences. He has undertaken a number of senior national and international administrative duties especially in the field of biomedical research.

Biography :

Dr. Karen Jubanyik received her medical degree from Yale University School of Medicine. She completed residency training in Internal Medicine and a fellowship in Women’s Health, both at Yale-New Haven Hospital. Subsequently, she entered the first residency class for Emergency Medicine at Yale-New Haven Hospital and upon graduating, was hired as faculty for the Section of Emergency Medicine, now the Department of Emergency Medicine. She initially served as the Associate Residency Director for the Emergency Medicine Residency, and was active at the National level in developing novel ways to teach and assess the Core Competencies. Since June 2006, she has been the Director of the required Emergency Medicine Clerkship at the Yale School of Medicine. She is a member of the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine and the American College Emergency Physicians and is currently the President-elect of the Executive Board of the Connecticut College of Emergency Physicians and will be the President of the State Chapter of CCEP, beginning in October 2012. In April 2009, after a competitive search process, she was selected to be one of four Academic Advisors for the medical school and now serves as the Academic Advisor to 25% of the students in each medical school class. She serves on the Yale-New Haven Hospital Bio-Ethics Committee, has obtained additional training in End-of-Life and Palliative Care (EPEC-EM), and is the National Chair of the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine& Palliative Care Interest Group. Integrating Palliative Care and End-of-Life Care teaching to residents and medical students on all clerkships, including Emergency Medicine, has been a recent priority for Dr. Jubanyik. In addition to leading workshops in End-of-Life and Palliative Care for third year students, she is a core faculty member in the Ethics and Professional Responsibility course taught to first-year students. In the pre-clinical curriculum at the medical school, she leads workshops in Recognizing Intimate Partner Violence, Providing Culturally Competent Care, and The Patient Experience of Illness.

Biography :

Professor Murray founded and now leads the first Palliative Care Research Group based in an academic department of Family Medicine, at Edinburgh University, Scotland, UK. In 2006 he was appointed to the inaugural Chair of Primary Palliative Care at the University of Edinburgh. He chairs the International Primary Palliative Care Research Group, and is a board member of the IAHPC. He regularly visits African countries conduct training, evaluation and research. His vision is that good palliative care should be available to everyone everywhere by generalists supported by specialists.

He is also an Editorial Advisor to the BMJ, and helped launch the BMJ Supportive & Palliative Care journal in Edinburgh in 2011. He campaigns internationally for palliative care beyond cancer, early palliative care and palliative care in the community, including care homes.

Dr. Lonnie Zeltzer, is a Professor of Pediatrics, Anesthesiology, Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, Director of the Pediatric Pain Program. She is a co-author on the Institute of Medicine report on Transforming Pain in America. She has received a WT Grant Faculty Scholar’s Award, a National Cancer Institute Research Career Development Award, a 2002 Physician Excellence Award from Trinity Hospice, the 2003 UCLA Helene Brown Award for Excellence in Cancer Control Research, a 2005 Mayday Pain and Policy Fellowship, and the 2005 Jeffrey Lawson Award for Advocacy in Children’s Pain Relief from the American Pain Society (APS). Her UCLA pain program received a 2009 Clinical Centers of Excellence in Pain Management Award from APS. She is Past-President of the SIG on Pain in Childhood in the International Association for the Study of Pain and past-Secretary of the APS. Her research focuses on the development of sex differences, puberty, and the role of parents on pain vulnerability and inhibition in children. She has over 350 publications, including a book for parents on chronic childhood pain (HarperCollins, 2005), also translated into French.

 Denise Stahl is an Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist with more than 20 years of experience working in palliative care, Denise is the Executive Director for the UPMC Palliative and Supportive Institute. She is responsible for growth and development of palliative care services across the UPMC continuum of care, including acute, post-acute and outpatient services. Denise has taught in the Schools of Nursing and Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh, Community College of Allegheny County, and is a faculty member of the University of Pittsburgh Consortium Ethics Program. Denise is a board certified advanced practice palliative care nurse and is President of the National Board of Certification for Hospice and Palliative Nurses. Denise is also certified as an EPEC and ELNEC trainer for nurses and physicians working in end of life care. Denise serves on the steering committee for the Coalition for Quality at End of Life for Western PA and is actively involved, locally, regionally and nationally as an advocate for all issues related to improving care for persons with serious illness.

Barbara Jack completed her nurse training and held various clinical posts in the NHS until she moved into nurse education joining Edge Hill University in 1992. Barbara undertook a part time PhD at the University of Manchester followed by a secondment to the Marie Curie Palliative Care Institute Liverpool, to undertake research in palliative care. This included evaluating the impact of the national End of Life initiative surrounding the Liverpool Care of the Dying Pathway. Barbara was awarded a Readership in 2003 and Professorial chair in 2006 and is currently the Faculty of Health & Social Care, Head of Research and Scholarship as well as Director of the Evidence Based Research Centre. In 2006 Barbara established links with Hospice Africa Uganda and in 2010 was made a Visiting Professor. Recently she has been appointed to a THET funded project to be part of a UK Hospice Africa Faculty, to a palliative care degree.

Barbara is editorial board member of Nurse Researcher and a Royal College of Nursing Research Academy mentor. Barbara has extensive research project experience including PhD and MD supervision and has a particular interest in research mentoring.

Dr. Bailey is an Associate Professor in the Duke University School of Nursing, Senior Fellow in the Duke Center for the Study of Aging and Human Development, and Claire M. Fagin Fellow. His research program has focused on patients with serious, life limiting illnesses such as prostate cancer or chronic hepatitis C. Currently he is testing the efficacy of an Uncertainty Management Intervention delivered by a nurse via telephone to patients and caregivers as they wait for a liver transplant. Dr. Bailey’s research project sought to understand the treatment decision making processes of men newly diagnosed with early stage prostate cancer. Dr. Bailey’s research interests include aging and chronic illness, men’s health, and psycho-oncology. He is particularly interested in the development and evaluation of psychoeducational nursing interventions to improve quality of life in patients with serious chronic illness by increasing their capability to self-manage uncertainty, distress, and symptoms associated with their disease.

Dr. Nabila Bennani-Baiti is a former fellow of the Harry R. Horvitz Center for Palliative Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic, a World Health Organization Demonstration Project in Palliative Medicine, and a European Society for Medical Oncology Designated Center of Integrated Oncology and Palliative Care. She started her research career studying the molecular mechanisms of apoptosis in glioblastomas at the Brain Tumor Institute/ Cancer Biology Department at the Cleveland Clinic, developing and troubleshooting small RNA interference technology. She has later carried out translational research with animal models of glioblastoma multiforme studying the effects of different chemotherapeutic agents on these particularly aggressive tumors. Currently, Dr. Bennani-Baiti is part of Fairview Hospital, a Cleveland Clinic Health System Hospital, but will be moving to William Beaumont Hospital.

Mr. LiPuma holds both Bachelors (1984) and Masters (1986) degrees in philosophy from the University of Dayton and a Certificate of Advanced Study in Bioethics from Cleveland State University (2003). He holds the rank of Associate Professor of Philosophy at Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland, Ohio. He has been teaching course work in philosophy with a concentration in bioethics since 1991. Dana M. Chase, MD, FACOG, is a gynecologic oncologist in the Division of Gynecologic Oncology and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Creighton University School of Medicine at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, a member of Catholic Healthcare West. She is part of the Comprehensive Cancer Center and is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology. She completed a four-year fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology at the University of California, Irvine. Dr. Chase’s expertise includes quality of life during cancer treatment and survivorship, supportive and palliative care, and imaging of gynecologic cancers. In addition she is Assistant Professor of Nursing at Columbia University. Dr. Merryn Gott  was appointed as Professor of Health Sciences and Director of Research to the School of Nursing, University of Auckland, New Zealand in 2009. She did her undergraduate degree at the University of Oxford and her PhD (in gerontology) at the University of Sheffield. Merryn leads an international research programme in the field of palliative and end of life care, with a particular focus upon the needs of older people and care delivery outside of specialist palliative care settings. Dr. Fu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Palliative Care & Rehabilitation Medicine, Section of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. He has given talks at national conferences, written chapters in major oncology textbooks, and published research in the area of cancer rehabilitation.

Dr. Joan Jody Chrastek is the Coordinator of Pain and Palliative Care for Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota. The services are provided at home or where ever the child is receiving care. She was born and brought up in India and trained as a nurse in Scotland. She has worked as a midwife and hospice nurse in the UK, India and the USA with adults and children. Jody is an adjunct faculty member of Globe University in the Nursing Department. She is the co-founder of Children’s Institute for Palliative Care, offering clinical education and support. She is a board member of Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association and the Minnesota Network for Hospice and Palliative Care. Her Doctorate in Nursing Practice work focused on Pediatric palliative care. She has published and presented nationally and internationally on hospice and palliative care particularly in pediatrics.

Dr. Birgitt van Oorschot is the head of the Interdisciplinary Center of Palliative Medicine of the Comprehensive Cancer Center Mainfranken, Würzburg, Germany. She is radiation oncologist and speaker of the working group „Palliative Radiotherapy and Palliative Medicine“ of the German Association of Radiooncology (DEGRO). From (2001 – 2004) she was responsible for the project, "Patients as partners – medical decision making at the end of life“ at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena, funded by the German Federal Health Ministry to improve shared decision making in patient-physician interaction in Germany.

Dr. Gao was trained as a medical doctor with Tongji Medical University, holds a PhD degree in Epidemiology and Health Statistics from Huazhong University of Science & Technology. She has over 15 years’ postdoctoral research experience in a wide range of public health topics. In recent years, her primary research areas have been extended from preventive medicine to palliative care and end of life care medicine, pharmacoepidemiology, health service research, quality of life research and clinical trials. She has strong quantitative skills with particular interests in using linked large scale database to improve our understandings about diseases and healthcare. Dr. Ana Draper is a Consultant Systemic Psychotherapist working in the Community Palliative Care team in Hertfordshire. She has developed and clinical supported a multi-system therapeutic service working with bereaved families and has been a consultant for the Childhood Bereavement Network. She has authored information and therapeutic story books for parents and children as well as academic papers on therapeutic work in palliative care. She has spoken at the House of Commons about issues concerning childhood bereavement, as well as teaching modules and short courses at the Tavistock Mental Health Trust, KCC foundation and Kings College, London. Dr. Jemila Seid Hamid received a PhD in mathematical statistics from the Swedish University of Agricultural sciences, Uppsala, Sweden, 2005.She held positions of research associate and biostatistician at the Hospital for Sick Children and Public Health Agency of Ontario. She is currently working as an assistant professor at the department of Clinical Epidemiology & Biostatistics, McMaster University  and have a joint appointment in Pathology & Molecular Medicine. I received the “young statistician of the year” award from the Swedish Statistical Association in 2006. Her main research activity is development, validation, implementation and application of statistical methods with a special focus on multivariate growth curves, statistical methods in diagnostic medicine and biomarkers, methods for genomics including time course genomic data and methods for data integration.

Dr. Rod MacLeod is Honorary Clinical Professor in General Practice and Primary Health Care, School of Population Health, University of Auckland and Director of Palliative Care at North Shore Hospice, Auckland. He was previously South Link Health Professor in Palliative Care at the Dunedin School of Medicine, University of Otago. He was also Associate Dean (Academic and Curriculum) and Chair of the Medical Education Group. Prior to this he was Director of Palliative Care at Mary Potter Hospice in Wellington. He has a longstanding interest in education in palliative care, completing his PhD work in 2002. • Acute procedural pain management among young children I am interested in managing immunisation pain using simple non-pharmacological interventions, such as using oral glucose solutions to reduce pain behaviours (ex. Crying). This topic was a part of my PhD thesis which was conferred in March 2011. • Exploring pediatric nurses’ perception and knowledge about infants’ pain management and the use of current available non-pharmacological interventions. This topic was also part of my PhD thesis which was conferred March/2011. • Improving neonates and young children development and wellbeing • Vitamin D deficiency and it’s relation to chronic diseases (ex. Asthma, DM, Autism etc) Also, I’m interested in finding the relation between VD deficiency and its relation to genetic factors.
