Research Interests • Pharmacoklinetic/Pharmacodynamic modeling of anti-infective and anti-cancer therapy • Clinical simulation and Monte Carlo analysis • Bacterial resistance in biofilm studies • Cancer epigenetic studies • Minority health care studies Research Focus • Anti-infective translational research in relation to antimicrobial resistance: Our goal is to improve patient care by maximizing clinical outcomes and preventing the development of bacterial resistance. • Anti-Cancer translational research in relation to 3D modeling and epigenetic studies: Our goal is to optimize cancer chemotherapy and overcome/reverse the development of resistance Approach taken by my research program is defined by both bench investigations as well as clinical simulation studies: • In-Vitro Pharmacokinetic/Pharmacodynamic(PK/PD) modeling of anti-infective therapy Cutting edge in-vitro pharmacodynamic modeling techniques (for both planktonic as well as biofilm growing cells) are utilized to mimic concentration-time profile and populations encountered in patients. Our goal is to design strategies that optimize anti-infective efficacy and prevent the selection of drug resistant mutants during anti-infective therapy. • In-Vitro Pharmacokinetic/Pharamcodynamic(PK/PD) modeling of cancer chemotherapy Advanced 3D cell culture models to evaluate administration schedules for anti-cancer agents and epigenetic studies to optimize clinical outcome. • Mathematical modeling and clinical simulation analysis This translational approach involves integration of pre-clinical pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic data as well as early clinical pharmacokinetics/population pharmacokinetics data into mathematical modeling and Monte Carlo simulation routines. Our goal is to elucidate exposure-response relationship for target identification and optimal design of clinical trials.

The primary goal of our research has been to identify factors that regulate the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of drugs in different patients populations in order to optimize drug therapy . We are interested in investigating the process of absorption, distribution, transport (p-glycoprotein and other transporters),metabolism (phase 1 and phase 2 pathways) and excretion of drugs in patients. My interest is in clinical pharmacokinetics and biopharmaceutics of drugs in different patient populations that include metabolism and drug-drug interactions. Pharmacogenetic testing is an area of interest as a tool to optimize therapies. An initiative towards Informatics research withan evaluation of CPOE trends and benefits is a growing area of interest as well.

Biography :

Dr. Jean-Cheng Kuo is one of the scientists that focus on the topic of the mechanosensitivity of integrin-based adhesion, which allows cells to translate physical cues from their environment (shear force in endothelia, tumor stiffness in cancer cells, ECM organization in fibroblasts) into biochemical cues that control cell behavior, differentiation, and death. She established a systematic method with a proteomics approach and microscopy-based technology and used this method to determine how the protein composition of integrin-based focal adhesions are modulated by myosin II-generated internal force and transduced biochemical signals to drive cell migration. Currently, Dr. Kuo’s group is interested in understanding how the signals of integrin-based focal adhesions regulate osteogenic differentiation in mesenchymal stem cells and cancer metastasis.

 Biography
Research Interest :

I use a multidisciplinary approach to evaluate the effects of drugs on the brain. Much of my current research focuses on the development of new drugs for the treatment of neurological and psychiatric disorders. Recently, we developed new classes of drugs with powerful anti-cocaine and anti-methamphetamine actions in animals. Much of research is now focused on optimizing these compounds, and identifying the cellular and molecular mechanisms through which they exert their beneficial actions. In addition, we recently developed and characterized a new class of compounds that changes animal behavior and neuronal structure and function in ways that predict favorable antidepressant potential. By targeting new mechanisms of action, these compounds are expected to help individuals who do not respond to existing medications.
