Biography :

George Perry is Dean of the College of Sciences and Professor of Biology at The University of Texas at San Antonio. Perry is recognized in the field of Alzheimer′s disease research particularly for his work on oxidative stress. Perry received his bachelor′s of arts degree in zoology with high honors from University of California, Santa Barbara. After graduation, he headed to Scripps Institution of Oceanography and obtained his PhD in marine biology under David Epel in 1979. He then received a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Cell Biology in the laboratories of Dr. Bill Brinkley and Joseph Bryan at Baylor College of Medicine where he laid the foundation for his observations of abnormalities in cell structures. In 1982, Perry joined the faculty of Case Western Reserve University, where he currently holds an adjunct appointment. He is distinguished as one of the top Alzheimer′s disease researchers with over 900 publications, one of the top 100 most-cited scientists in neuroscience and behavior and one of the top 25 scientists in free radical research. Perry has been cited over 40,000 times (H=101) and is recognized as an ISI Highly Cited Researcher. Perry is Editor for numerous journals and is editor-in-chief for the Journal of Alzheimer′s Disease. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences, Microscopy Society of America,Royal Society of Medicine, Royal Society of Chemistry, Society of Biology and the Linnean Society and past-president of the American Association of Neuropathologists.He has been electedmember ofthe Spanish Royal Academy of Sciences, Mexican Academy of Sciences and Academy of Sciences Lisbon; Iberoamerican Molecular Biology Organization, Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives and won the Distinguished Professional Mentor Award from the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science, Senior Investigator Award from the International College of Geriatric psychoneuropharmacology,Senior Fulbright Fellow and the National Honor Plaque of Panama for exceptional contributions to Neuroscience.

Perry′s research is primarily focused on how Alzheimer disease develops from a biological perspective and the physiological consequences of the disease at a cellular level. He is currently working to determine the sequence of mitochondrial events leading to metabolic failure.

Dr. Ji Li finished his graduate study in Prof. Rongliang Zheng’s laboratory in 1998. He completed his molecular signaling post-doc training at Sichuan University and the National Institute on Aging/NIH during 1998-2002. He was appointed as a research faculty member in Yale University School of Medicine from 2003 to 2007. He then set up his laboratory in University of Wyoming in 2007, now he is appointed as an Assistant Professor in the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo, his group is focusing on investigating the signaling mechanisms of aging-associated cardiovascular diseases.

Biography :

Professor Michel Bourin has held the position of Professor of Pharmacology at the University of Nantes since 1985. After completing his pharmacist and medical training at Tours University he was awarded degrees in neuropsychopharmacology, clinical pharmacology and general pharmacology in Paris and completed his psychiatric training in Nantes. Since 1988, Professor Bourin has been Head of Research : Neurobiology of Anxiety and Depression. He has also served as an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Edmonton (Alberta) since 1995 and visiting Professor at University of Craiova (Romania). Professor Bourin is currently a World Health Organization (WHO) expert for drug dependency (2000-2012). He is Doctor Hononoris Causa of the University of Tartu (Estonia) and University of Craiova (Romania) Professor Bourin holded the post of treasurer of the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ECNP) and was a member of the Education Committee of the Collegium Internationale Neuropsychopharmacologicum (CINP). He has served as Associate Editor on European Neuropsychopharmacology (1992-1998) and currently serves as Chief Editor of frontiers in Psychopharmacology and Associate Editor on the Journal of Psychiatry and Neurosciences. He is a member of the Editorial Committee of International Clinical Psychopharmacology. Professor Bourin has published extensively in the field of psychopharmacology including more than 300 original papers. He has also authored more than 250 educational and review papers both in French and English.

Dr. Andrea Giuffrida is Vice President for Research and Professor of Pharmacology at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA). He received his Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Catania (Italy), and worked as postdoctoral fellow at the University of Siena (Italy) and the Neuroscience Institute in San Diego (USA) before joining the Department of Pharmacology at UTHSCSA. Dr. Giuffrida has provided important breakthroughs to the neurobiology of the endocannabinoid system, which have been published in high-impact journals, including Nature and Nature Neuroscience. His research interests focus on the role played by the endocannabinoid system in psychomotor disorders characterized by dopaminergic dysfunction, such as schizophrenia and Parkinson’s disease. Dr. Giuffrida also worked as an AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellow in the Office of Science Policy at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the Office of the Director of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.

Victor Louis Sylvia, PhD is an Associate Professor of Orthopaedics at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA). He received his PhD degree from Texas A&M University, did postdoctoral research at the University of Texas at Austin, and joined the faculty at UTHSCSA. He has authored articles and chapters on cellular signaling mechanisms of vitamin D3 and steroid hormones in bone and cartilage. He served as Chairman of the Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee and currently oversees all animal studies in the department. Dr. Sylvia is principal investigator and co-investigator on corporate-sponsored and federally-funded grants and performs bone and soft tissue engineering studies using mouse, rat, rabbit and goat models. He has over 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals. He is an adjunct professor in the Biomedical Engineering graduate program at the University of Texas as San Antonio. John J Borg received a first class honours degree as well as a master′s distinction from the University of Malta and a PhD from the University of Bristol. He is a scientist and a regulator who has worked in the industry in the early 2000s as well as a regulator of medicinal products since 2005. Biography :

Dr. Ismail Murat Palabiyik graduated from Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Ankara and obtained PhD from Department of Analytical Chemistry, Facult of Pharmacy, University of Ankara. Currently, he is working in same department. His current research is developing analytical techniques for drug analysis from dosage forms and biological fluids using with capillary electrophoresis, high performance liquid chromatography, spectrofluorimetry and UV spectrophotometry. Beside this, for investigating effects of experimental factors on analysis in HPLC and CE methods, he utilized Response Surface Methodology (RSM). Also, he is specialized in chemometry and worked one year in department of pharmacology and studied diabetes treatment. He is a Visiting Scholar, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Faculty of Pharmacy, Laboratory of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Drug Analysis and worked with Professor Jos Hoogmartens group in liquid chromatographic column characterization. During his MSc and PhD period, he took a fellowship from TÜBİTAK – BİDEB, The Scientific Research and Technological Council of Turkey. His PhD thesis was awarded by University of Ankara. He is a reviewer for journals like Journal of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Analysis and Journal of AOAC International.

Dr. Chaudhuri’s research program is primarily focused in unraveling the behavior of granular material which poses fundamental conceptual challenges. Granular flow impacts numerous unit operations pertinent to pharmaceutical manufacturing and further study is needed to better understand how it will impact these operations. Dr. Chaudhuri and his graduate and undergraduate students are involved in using fundamental knowledge of granular mechanics to understand, design, model and scale-up various unit operations such as coating, milling, drying, granulation, mixing and tableting which are key processes in pharmaceutical manufacturing."

Dr. Chaudhuri’s other research interest are in the areas of multiscale modeling of biological systems. His focus is in the development of high performance molecular modeling algorithms to gain a fundamental understanding of nanoscale transport and thermodynamics. He intends to employ numerical tools and mathematical approaches to integrate models from micro-scales to macro-scales in a seamless fashion to build quantitatively predictive models of complex biological behaviors such as transdermal drug delivery, pulmonary activity, and cancer.

His research also includes a herbal drug in BPH patients (Pygeum africanum) and a percutaneous BCG vaccine (Onco-BCG) in transitional cell carcinoma of urinary bladder. He has to his credit one of the largest clinical trial with MMR Vaccine wherein he organized and monitored the study on 450,000 children in collaboration with Ministry of Health and Population, Cairo, Egypt. Dr. Alok Nahata has completed his Ph.D. from the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Doctor Hari Singh Gour University, Sagar (M.P.), India. He has done his postgratuation in Pharmacognosy and Natural Products from the same department. Specialization in M. Pharm was on the memory enhancing and anxiolytic activity of Shankhpushpi. Phytochemcial and pharmacological investigations on all the different varieties of Shankhpushpi was done. Markers have been isolated and characterization and standardization parameters have been developed for using analytical techniques like HPTLC, HPLC and Spectrofluorimetry. In his doctoral programme, he worked on the effect of herbals on benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate cancer. Successful phytochemical investigations led to the isolation of markers from the tested plants and new leads in the prevention and treatment of BPH and prostate cancer were developed. Dr. Alok Nahata is a recipient of Ranbaxy Science Scholar Award-2009 for young scientists in the field of Pharmaceutical Sciences awarded by Ranbaxy Science Foundation,Ranbaxy Laboratories Pvt. I am currently working as a Senior Scientist in Synthonics Inc., a specialty pharmaceutical company focused on the discovery, development of drugs that incorporate proprietary metal coordination chemistry. I received my PhD from JNTU, Hyderabad, India and Post-Doc in University of Colorado, Denver, USA. My research focus includes dendrimer mediated drug delivery systems and development of novel formulations for sustained delivery of both small and large molecules. In current job, I am using metal coordination that entails attaching a pharmaceutically acceptable metal, such as zinc, bismuth or magnesium, to a known pharmaceutical agent to create a new and more effective drug by increasing solubility and absorption without altering the action of the underlying drug. I am actively involving in supervising the departmental activities for pre formulation, formulation development for pre-clinical and clinical studies including analytical and regulatory. Before joining in Synthonics, I worked in various pharmaceutical companies in India at supervising levels. I am responsible for product development activities for NCEs and generic drugs targeting regulated markets. I have authored scientific publications in reputed international journals and inventor in few patent applications. I had given oral presentations at international level conferences. I am also serving as scientific reviewer for high impact journals such as Pharmaceutical research, Molecular Pharmaceutics, Journal of Drug Targeting and Journal of Ophthalmic Pharmacology and Therapeutics.

Dr. Serels graduated Magna Cum Laude from Brandeis University in 1988 with a B.A. in both biology and economics.  He then completed his medical degree at New York University School of Medicine in 1992 where he was the recipient of the Samuel Soifer Memorial Award.  He completed his urologic residency at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center in New York.  While in residency, he studied at both Memorial Sloan Kettering hospital for urologic oncology and at UCLA for urogynecology.  He was recognized for his outstanding clinical work during this time by receiving an award from Montefiore Medical Center.
