Biography :

Professor Afghanis education, research and teaching experience in the last two decades integrate the disciplines of clinical and preventive medicine, kinesiology, nutrition, human physiology, and epidemiology. Dr. Afghani earned her PhD from a highly competitive five-year program at the University of Southern California with a dual focus in Kinesiology and Epidemiology. Since then, she has collaborated with world renowned researchers and clinicians at USC and UC, San Diego on several NIH-funded research projects with interest in the factors that influence bone acquisition, maintenance, and loss in healthy or diseased children, adults and the elderly of multi-ethnicities. Dr. Afghani has published extensively in the fields of preventive medicine, sports medicine and endocrinology in reputable peer-reviewed scientific journals and has been the editor of two books and the author of several book chapters. She also serves on the honorary editorial board of Clinical Medicine: Pediatrics and the Open Obesity Journal. Professor Afghanis teaching experience has been extensive as well both in the classroom setting (USC and UCLA) and online (TUI) where she has taught and mentored students at the undergraduate and graduate levels since 2000.

Dr. Kuroki is an Associate Professor at the University of Miyazaki in Japan. He is a board certificate spine surgeon approved by Japanese Society for Spine Surgery and Related Research. He is registered as a reviewer of SPINE and Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research. He graduated from Miyazaki Medical College (present University of Miyazaki) in 1990. After completing residency program, he started a career as a spine surgeon in 1994. He received DMSc. degree from Miyazaki Medical College in 2005. He visited US twice as a clinical observer and a research fellow. In 1998, he studied under Marc Asher, MD (Kansas City, Kansas) about the management of spinal deformity. From 2001 to 2002, he performed spine biomechanical researches in the Vijay Goel, PhD lab (Toledo, Ohio). He is now working at not only Miyazaki University Hospital as a spine surgeon but also at University of Miyazaki as a teaching staff.

Dr. Springer had completed a F32 funded postdoctoral fellowship in 1988 at the University of Rochester and joined the Department of Neurology at Hahnemann University as an Assistant Professor and was then promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in 1992. During this time, my research focused on events controlling the regulation of neurotrophic factor gene expression in the central nervous system and how this might be related to certain neurodegenerative disorders including Alzheimer’s Disease and ALS. In 1995, I joined the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology at the University of Kentucky and changed my research focus to the study of secondary injury following spinal cord injury (SCI). I currently hold the position of Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation where my role is to promote translational research and collaborative opportunities between the University of Kentucky and Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital. I have served on the editorial board of several journals and have been a member of a number of NIH study sections. My lab was the first to demonstrate and characterize the potential efficacy of riluzole as a treatment for acute SCI. A multi-center clinical trial is currently underway. We then began studies to understand cell death mechanisms and, applying research discoveries from the immune system literature, were able to identify part of the signaling pathways contributing to caspase-3 activation after SCI. We extended our studies to include the role of mitochondria as mediators of cell death signaling as well as a source of free radical production. Our current studies include examination of inhibitors of the mitochondrial permeability transition state and mitochondrial-targeted free radical scavengers as methods to reduce ongoing secondary injury and promote functional recovery.

Biography :

Dr. Candido completed his undergraduate education at Rutgers University in New Jersey with a degree in Biological Sciences. His medical education was completed at the New York Medical College, followed by an anesthesiology residency also at the New York Medical College. He completed a one-year Fellowship in Pain Management at the University Of Illinois College Of Medicine in Chicago.
Dr. Candido worked in anesthesiology and pain medicine in New York City at the Lenox Hill Hospital from 1989-1997. He returned to Chicago to academic medicine and was promoted to Associate Professor of Anesthesiology at Northwestern University Medical Center where he ran the Division of Acute Pain Management. From Northwestern, Dr. Candido became a Professor of Anesthesiology and the Pain Medicine Fellowship and Clinical Director at Loyola from 2005-2008. In January 2008 he was named Chairman, Department of Anesthesiology at the Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center and Professor of Clinical Anesthesiology at the University of Illinois, Chicago.
Dr. Candido has published extensively on clinical studies involving regional anesthesia and interventional pain medicine. His bibliography includes almost fifty original papers and fifty textbook chapters on these, and related topics.

Michael Pazianas, MD, is an osteoporosis and metabolic bone disease specialist. Dr. Pazianas′s research areas of expertise are in the pathophysiology of calcium and phosphate homeostasis. His publications include the first description of aortic stenosis as a complication of chronic uremia, identification of risk factors for radiographic hyperparathyroidism in patients with end-stage renal disease, assessment of the bones of individuals from Camelford, England after an incident in which 20 tons of aluminum sulphate were deposited into a public drinking water supply, effects of HIV infection on bone mass, the identification of a divalent-cation sensing "receptor" in the enterocytes and a number of studies on the skeletal complications of gastrointestinal/liver disorders. Dr. Pazianas′s research has been published in over 85 papers, including authoritative review articles and chapters. He is also co-author of a monograph entitled "Therapy of Osteoporosis". Dr Pazianas is a reviewer for several journals including PNAS, Blood, FASEB, American Journal of Physiology, Osteoporosis Int and Calcified Tissues Int.

Of Belgian descent, born in the Congo, after college, he began training in psychology at the University of Liege in Belgium, for soon branching out into paramedical studies and to a course of neuroscience. He undertook many post graduate courses (DEU) in neurophysiology, neurosurgery, neurology in France, Belgium (UCL), Switzerland (CHUV) and the USA (Harvard University Childrens Hospital, Boston) and the Queen Square Hospital in London. It operates from neurophysiologist at St. Joseph Hospital in Belgium in the Department of Neurosurgery / Neurology at Liege as department head of the Department of Clinical Neurophysiology. During this period, he assumed the role of tutor in clinical neurophysiology in training in neurology at the end of the cycle. In 2001, he was hired in the Department of Neurosurgery University Hospital under the auspices of Prof.. JG Villemure. At the same time, it provides business neurophysiologist Luxembourg (HVEA) and scientific consultant at various universities in cognitive research, neuromonitoring and understanding of comatose states. Similarly, there is a promoter of several theses and dissertations and actively participates in university or post graduate training. Since 2002, he participated in various clinical research in it including DBS, evoked potentials, trans-cranial magnetic stimulation, intraoperative corticographie in epilepsy and intracerebral vascular disease as well as electrophysiological animal studies . He has presented more than 140 oral presentations or poster defenses at various international conferences and written 7 book chapters neurophysiology. Fraser Henderson was foreman on a cattle station in the Outback of Australia before receiving his bachelor’s and Medical degree at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville VA. He served for with the Multi-National Peace Keeping Force in Beirut, earning the Navy Commendation Medal for preparedness of and treatment of mass casualties following the terrorist bombing attack in Beirut, Lebanon , October1983. After completing his residency under Phanor Perot at the Medical University of South Carolina, he returned to complete his active duty obligation at the National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, MD ,as Director of Spine. He was Brigade Neurosurgeon for the 4th Marine Expeditionary Brigade in Desert Shield and Desert Storm during the 1st Gulf War. He then completed a fellowship in Craniospinal surgery under Professor Alan Crockard at The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, London.
Finishing his tour with the US Navy, Commander Henderson joined Georgetown University, in Washington D.C. as Director of Neurosurgery of the Spine and Cranio-cervical Junction. He was Co-Director of the Lombardi Neuro-Oncology Division, Co-Director of the CyberKnife Radiosurgery Center, and Medical Director of the Neuroscience Nursing Units. He was Professor of Neurosurgery and Radiology at Georgetown University, where he was active in advancing CyberKnife radiosurgery for treatment of chordoma and other complex spinal tumors. He developed intellectual property for three inventions relating to spinal radiosurgery and spinal cancer, including the TPS® –Telescopic Plate Spacer- a vertebral replacement device for metastatic disease and was Principal Investigator in the translational development of a radio-sensitizing drug, and a drug to block the malignant invasiveness of Glioblastoma Multiforme.

Dr.Henderson entered private practice in Bethesda Maryland, as Director of Neurosurgery at Doctors Hospital and Director of the Chiari Center of Excellence, where he is focused on the development of the understanding and treatment of deformity induced injury to the brainstem and spinal cord in Chiari Malformation and Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. He is inventor of 11 devices and concepts relating to disorders of the brainstem and spinal cord, has published over 50 peer reviewed articles and book chapters, and given over 120 invited lectures with a focus on craniocervical disorders, Chiari malformation, cancer, radiosurgery and unusual problems of the spine. Dr Henderson lives with his wife, Becky, and three sons- Fraser, Lansdale and Landon- on a farm in Prince Georges County, Maryland.

Dr, Onifer has a broad expertise in central nervous system injury and repair specifically as it relates to traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI). After completing his American Heart Association fellowship-funded thesis project about functional, embryonic neural cells transplantation for the ischemic brain at Indiana University School of Medicine, he went to The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis at the University of Miami School of Medicine for post-doctoral training. He evaluated the fate of neural progenitor cells following transplantation into the normal and injured brain and spinal cord. Subsequently, he assisted with the development of the second, clinically relevant adult rat model of contusive cervical SCI. After being promoted to Instructor in the Department of Neurological Surgery, he used his foundation grant funding to test hypotheses about functional axonal regeneration following transection thoracic SCI. Upon joining the Departments of Neurosurgery and Anatomical Sciences & Neurobiology at the University of Louisville as an Assistant Professor, he used his NIH/NINDS RO1 grant funding and NIH/NCRR/COBRE project funding to test hypotheses about functional sensory axonal regeneration after laceration cervical SCI. He also was a founding faculty member of the Kentucky Spinal Cord Injury Research Center. As a Research Assistant and Associate Professor in the Spinal Cord & Brain Injury Research Center and Department of Anatomy & Neurobiology at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, he is using his Kentucky Spinal Cord & Head Injury Research Trust grant funding to further test a hypothesis derived from his previous NIH funding projects. It is that combining chondroitinase ABC administration, to degrade inhibitory chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans and promote sensory axon collateral sprouting, after laceration cervical SCI with forelimb rehabilitation will improve forelimb function recovery. His long-term goal is to translate adaptive plasticity treatments to spinal cord injured persons. As a faculty member, he has been the primary mentor of M.D./Ph.D., graduate, medical, undergraduate, and high school students during their research training. He annually gives presentations about a SCI research career to high school students. He also serves as a volunteer and liaison to a community-based SCI organization. He also reviews neurotrauma-related grants and manuscripts.

Dr. Gabay pursued her education in France where she received a PhD in physiology and patho-physiology at Paris VI University in 2007, following a master degree in cartilage and bone biomechanics at Paris VI University, Lariboisiere hospital.
She started her career after Medical school by conducting clinical studies in a pharmaceutical company, where she acquired a formation in pharmaceutical marketing as well in a Rheumatology Business Unit. She received a certificate in Virology in 2006 from Pasteur Institute, Paris. After a post-doctoral position in University Pierre and Marie Curie, Paris, she started to work at NIH, Bethesda, MD, as a researcher in the cartilage biology and orthopedic branch, cartilage molecular genetics. My research interest is focused on the most common disease in the rheumatology area: arthritis.
After studies on inflammation and signaling pathways involved in osteoarthritis (OA), I focused on OA and obesity, cartilage and subchondral bone under mechanical stress, and cartilage bio-engineering. I work with KnockOut or transgenic mice and am currently studying the role of the protein Sirt-1, a histone deacetylase known as a longevity factor, in arthritis. Conducting bench work is important only if you can link your work with clinical studies and diseases, and I am trying to develop a translational aspect in my research.

Dr. Stephanie Kolakowsky-Hayner is the Director of Rehabilitation Research at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose, CA. She is the Project Director of the Northern California Traumatic Brain Injury Model System of Care Follow-up Center and the Northern California Spinal Cord Injury Model System of Care Follow-up Center. Dr. Kolakowsky-Hayner holds an appointment as a Clinical Assistant Professor Affiliated in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Stanford University School of Medicine and is also a the Vice-Chair of the Brain Injury Association of California Board of Directors. In addition to being the proud mom of 5 school-aged children, she actively serves on the ACBIS Board of Governors, and the Bay Area Brain Injury Task Force, American Spinal Injury Association’s Prevention Committee and the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine’s Early Career Committee, Early Career Course Planning Committee, Policy and Legislation Committee, and is the co-lead for the conference planning subcommittee of International Networking Group. Dr. Andrew received his undergraduate education in biomedical and material science engineering at Johns Hopkins University, and medical schooling at the University of Buffalo, Dr. Cappuccino completed a residency in Orthopedic Surgery. He became Board Certified in Orthopedics, and then returned to Johns Hopkins to complete specialty training in spine surgery. Dr. Cappuccino is one of the first surgeons in the country to be certified by the American Board of Spine Surgery. During his training and continuing presently, Dr. Cappuccino has been an investigator in numerous studies and trials dedicated to improving spinal surgery outcomes and technologies. Dr. Cappuccino has been a principle investigator on international teams of doctors who have developed artificial disc replacements for the neck and back. Dr. Martin Oudega has received his PhD from the University of Leiden in Leiden, The Netherlands. He currently is an assistant Professor in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Neurobiology and Bioengineering at the University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, USA. Dr. Oudega completed postdoctoral fellowships in Neurobiology at the University of California at San Diego, La Jolla, California and at the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis at the University of Miami School of Medicine, Miami, Florida. He was an assistant professor in Neurological Surgery at the University of Miami School of Medicine and in Neurology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Oudega was the director of the Animal Injury and Repair laboratory at the International Center for Spinal Cord Injury at The Kennedy Krieger Institute, Baltimore, Maryland. Currently, Dr. Oudega is directing the Spinal Cord Repair Laboratory that investigates the efficacy of cellular transplants, alone or in combination with axon growth-supporting interventions and/or artificial and natural biomaterials, to elicit anatomical and/or functional restoration after spinal cord injury. The overall goal of Dr. Oudega’s laboratory is to develop spinal cord repair strategies for translation into the clinic.

Research Interest :

Dr. Martin Oudega research interests are in designing strategies to promote recovery after spinal cord injury using transplantation of repair-supporting cells such as bone marrow stromal cells or Schwann cells. We combine cell transplantation with interventions that decrease the naturally occurring growth-inhibition. Gene therapy and biomaterials (artificial or natural) are being used to promote repair directly and to augment the reparative abilities of cell transplants.

Dr. Malwina Czarny-Ratajczak is a human molecular geneticist. She received her Ph.D. degree at the Poznan University of Medical Sciences, Poznan, Poland. During her Ph.D. she analyzed genes involved in cartilage development in patients with bone dysplasias at the Department of Biochemistry, Collagen Research Unit, University of Oulu, Finland. She carried out postdoctoral studies with Dr. Leena Ala-Kokko and Darwin Prockop at the Center for Gene Therapy, Tulane University, New Orleans, Louisiana. Her research was focused on identification of new candidate genes for multiple epiphyseal dysplasia and osteoarthritis via wide-genome scan and linkage analysis. She is currently the faculty at the Department of Medicine, Tulane University, School of Medicine, New Orleans and at the Department of Medical Genetics, Poznan University of Medical Sciences, Poznan, Poland. Her research is focused on genetic factors causing different forms of spondyloepimetaphyseal and spondylometaphyseal dysplasias, multiple epiphyseal dysplasia as well as osteoarthtitis.

Dr. John Caridi, MD, Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery, specializes in the treatment of complex spinal diseases requiring reconstruction of the vertebral column as well as minimally invasive approaches to common spine problems. He joined the Department of Neurosurgery at The Mount Sinai Medical Center in 2011 after completing a premier orthopedic Spine and Scoliosis Surgery Fellowship at The Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. Following the completion of this program, he spent three months learning cutting edge techniques from several spine surgery masters in Munich and Carlsbad, Germany. Prior to completing his fellowship, he was a visiting professor at the University of Maryland Medical Center and at the Baltimore Veterans Affairs Medical Center where he was involved in neurosurgery resident education. After receiving his MD from Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, he completed his neurosurgery residency training at the number one trauma center on the east coast, the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center and the University of Maryland, Baltimore, where he served as Chief Resident. During his training, he learned pediatric neurosurgery with some of the leading experts at Johns Hopkins University Medical Center. Dr. Caridi has been invited as a guest lecturer to many courses on spine disease. He was also a visiting neurosurgeon at the Moi University Hospital in Eldoret, Kenya, where he was responsible for teaching local physicians and medical students, as well as providing services for the underprivileged. Currently he cares for patients with a wide range of spinal disorders, but specializes specifically in adult spinal deformity and spinal tumors. His research includes outcomes studies in patients with neurologic deficits secondary to spine pathology and studying radioactive seed implantation for metastatic spinal column tumors.

The area of research that I focus upon relates to my dedicated training and clinical practice in spinal metastases, brain metastases, and primary central nervous system tumours. My aim is to further our understanding of the application of radiotherapy for these diseases, and to develop new therapeutic strategies relating to the application of high precision radiotherapy technology. My primary research area is in technical evaluation and clinical trials specific to stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) of spinal tumours. In line with high precision treatments, I participate in the development of non-radiotherapeutic modalities for spine and brain tumors using photodynamic therapy and MRI guided ultrasound technology, respectively.
