Biography : Marco Gobbetti is full professor of Applied Microbiology at the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Bari. He has been a member of the Scientific Committee of the II International Symposium on Sourdough (Brussells, 2003), Food Micro-2006 (Bologna, 2006), Cheese Science (Sydney, 2006), III International Symposium on Sourdough (Bari, 2006), International Symposium on Gluten Free Products (Cork, 2007), IV International Symposium on Sourdough (Munich, 2009) and Cheese Science 2010 (Auckland). He is speaker at International Conferences that relate to the food microbiology. He is associate editor of the journal IJFS. He is member of the Editorial Board of the journals IDJ, IJFM and FM. He is the author of about 270 publications that relate to the microbiology of food. As reported today by ISI Web of Science, the publications reviewed were cited 2,789 times, with an average of citations for each equal to 18:59 and an index "h" equal to 33.

Biography : Marli Camassola was born in Caxias do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, in 1977is graduated in Biological Sciences at University of Caxias do Sul (1999), MSc. (2002) and PhD (2007) in Biotechnology at University of Caxias do Sul and conducted postdoctoral studies at Imperial College London (2008-2009). She is currently researcher and professor at University of Caxias do Sul. Has experience in Microbiology and Biochemistry with emphasis on biochemical processes, mainly in the following areas: production and characterization of hydrolytic enzymes and phenol oxidase, hydrolysis and fermentation of lignocellulose, industrial microbiology. Participates in the research group that has some patents about enzyme production (cellulases and xylanases) and second generation ethanol in Brazil and a PCT (USA). She has several articles in publications in international scientific journals. Coordinates projects in the production of hydrolytic enzymes and hydrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass. It is revising the national and international scientific journal.

Biography : Dr. Dahman has research focus on several emerging areas of technology in the fields of Biotechnology, Nanotechnology, with special interest in Biomedical Engineering. He has commissioned a state-of-the-art research facility at Ryerson to conduct his research projects, which were funded by several agencies including Ryerson University, NSERC and Ministry of Agriculture Canada. In the past five years, Dr. Dahman has supervised nearly 20 graduate student theses projects, and published several peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and conference proceedings. His research team has participated in several national and international conferences in addition to local and regional meetings. Dr. Dahman has long experience in developing medical devices for the health care industry, such as developing and testing novel wound dressing materials for chronic wounds. His is currently working on designing and synthesizing novel nano-structured biomaterials with focus on improving health care industry. His research activities were evolved into the production of biofuels from renewable resources such as agricultural crops and wastes. He is also actively involved in developing and testing new types of bioreactors that are mainly utilized in fermentations and other biotechnology applications.

Biography : Yanli Chen is currently a research assistant at the Department of Chemical Engineering in Auburn University. She has worked extensively in various research fields, such as systems biology, fermentation engineering, sustainable energy development, microfibrous materials manufacturing, catalyst development, and air filtration. Ms. Chen has written and published 8 papers in peer-reviewed journals. She has given several oral and poster presentations on different conferences. She is a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the Golden Key International Honour Society, the American Chemical Society and the Society of Women Engineering. Biography : Dr. Aneli M. Barbosa held an Associate Professorship in Biochemistry and Biotechnology at Universidade Estadual de Londrina (UEL), in the state of Paraná, Brazil, from 1982 until 2010, when she retired. She is now a Research Scientist at the Biorefining Research Institute (BRI) at Lakehead University (Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada). Dr Barbosa graduated in Pharmacy and Biochemistry from UEL in 1978, then performed Masters (1984) and Doctorate (1992) degrees in Biochemistry at the Universidade Federal do Paraná (Curitiba, Brazil). She spent post-doc terms at Murdoch University in Perth, Western Australia, (1994-1995) studying enzymes involved in the degradation of aromatic and xenobiotic compounds; and Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha, Ciudad Real, Spain (2007), on yeast beta-glucosidases and their roles in wine oenology. In 2009, Dr. Barbosa was Visiting Scientist resident at the BRI (Lakehead University) studying enzymes from Boreal Forest wood-decay fungi and their applications in biorefining processes. During her activities at UEL, Dr. Barbosa supervised more than 80 students (under-graduate and post-graduate) on thesis projects. Her published research (60 research and 220 conference papers, one book and 4 book chapters), and hold 3 patents on botryosphaeran.

Research Interest : Aneli Barbosa research interest focuses in applied biochemistry and microbiology on the production of microbial enzymes (xylanases, laccases, beta-glucanases, lipases, beta-glucosidases) and fungal exopolysaccharides (botryosphaeran). Her other research interests include enzyme and fermentation technology, polysaccharide chemistry, applications of fungal enzymes in biorefining processes and biotechnology.

Biography : Dr. Robert FH Dekker is Director of the Biorefining Research Institute at Lakehead University (Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada), and Senior Ontario Research Chair in Biorefining Research. He holds Adjunct Professorships at Lakehead University in the Dept. of Biology and Dept. of Chemistry (Faculty of Science) and Faculty of Natural Resource Management. Dr. Dekker graduated with Honours in Biochemistry in 1969 from the University of Western Australia (Perth). He then moved to the tropical city of Townsville (Queensland, Australia), where he graduated with a Masters (1972) and PhD (1975) degrees in Microbial Biochemistry/Enzymology/Carbohydrate Chemistry from James Cook University. A two-year post-doctoral term was spent at Albert-Ludwig University of Freiburg in Germany (1975-76) where he studied the biosynthesis of bacterial cell-wall polysaccharides. In 1976, he worked in academia at the University of Natal (Pietermaritzburg, South Africa) teaching Biochemistry, and returned to Australia in 1980, where he worked with Australian industry (Sydney) in Biotechnology (1980-81). In 1982, Dr. Dekker joined the CSIRO of Australia (Melbourne) to develop a program of research on plant biomass conversion (now referred to as biorefining). It was at the CSIRO that he developed the steam explosion technology as pretreatment for the enzymatic saccharification of lignocellulosic materials. Upon termination of the program in 1990, Dr. Dekker worked at various academic centers around the world (Murdoch University, 1993-96; Universidade Estadual de Londrina (Brazil), 1999-2002 and 2004-2006; Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha (Ciudad Real, Spain), 2006-2008) before taking up his present position at Lakehead University in Canada. Dr. Dekker has spent more than 40 years in research (academia, government and industry). He has held Visiting Professorships in Australia, Brasil, Chile, France, Spain and Turkey, has consulted for Australian industry on biotechnology and the United Nations (United Nations Development Fund in Chile, 1982). He is the author of 100 research and review publications, has presented 200 research papers at scientific meetings; national and international, and holds 3 patents on botryosphaeran.

Post-doctoral specialization on Biotechnology at the University of Milano (Italy). Since 1998: contract professor on Dairy Microbiology, University of Pisa, Italy. Research Interest : Dr . Munish Puri research includes protein biotechnology which includes protein chemistry, enzyme technology and bio-processing. The major goals of my laboratory are to produce and purify novel therapeutic proteins/ enzymes from variety of sources (microbes, animal and plant cell) and to improve their functional efficiency, specific activity for carrying out transformations of flavonoid/ pharmaceutical intermediates/animal cell product with health benefits. We follow molecular biology, bio-processing and protein engineering approaches for enhancing the efficiency of various enzymes (few eg: rhamnosidases, aspartase, inulinase, proteases, etc)/ proteins (ribosome inactivating proteins, macrophage proteins etc) with therapeutic benefits. We are also working on the biophysical characterization and crystallization of novel proteins to evaluate rigidity of 3D structure which is of paramount importance in immobilization and also for assigning new function to proteins.

Biography : Dr Charles U. Ugwu undergraduate thesis was focused isolation of pathogenic fungi from tobacco. His masters and graduate works were centered on development of photobioreactors for microalgae cultures, as well as operation of fermentation processes for production of useful metabolites (supervised by Professors Hideo Tanaka and James C. Ogbonna). He did my first postdoctoral studies at the University of Florence in Italy (under supervision by Prof. Mario Tredici). He also conducted my postdoctoral studies at the University of Tsukuba, Japan from 2005 to 2007 (supervised by Prof. Hideki Aoyagi). In course of my research stay in the University of Tsukuba, He worked with Dr. Yutaka Tokiwa (distinguished scientist in biopolymer researches), who co-supervised my work at AIST Tsukuba, Japan. Afterwards, He worked for DIC Lifetec Co. Ltd (a company which embarks on commercial production of Spirulina) from 2007 to 2009. He had been working with Okinawa Industrial Technology Center since 2009 as a senior researcher.

Dr. A. Manteca obtained the Biology degree from the University of Oviedo in 2000 and a PhD-degree in Microbiology, in 2005. After a postdoctoral stay at the University of Southern Denmark, working in quantitative mass spectrometry, he returned to the University of Oviedo as a postdoctoral researcher in 2011. The main research line of Dr. Manteca is focused in the study of Streptomyces biology and differentiation. Streptomyces is a gram positive bacterium characterized by a complex developmental cycle, which is the evolutionary origin of some of the eukaryiotic signalling protein domains (apoptotic ATPases, kinases, caspases, nucleases, etc.). In addition, it is a very important industrial bacterium producing around two thirds of clinically relevant secondary metabolites. A. Manteca was pioneer in the application of new experimental methods to the analysis of Streptomyces biology. Dr. Manteca has published more than 26 works in the most important microbiological and proteomic journals.

Biography : Dr. Grzegorz Kłosowski is an graduate (1990) of the present University of Technology and Life Sciences in Bydgoszcz (Poland), Faculty of Agriculture and Biotechnology. He began the scientific career with the position of the assistant and then assistant professor in Institute Of Agricultural And Food Biotechnology in Warsaw (1990-2005). He got a doctor′s degree in 2003 at West Pomeranian University of Technology in Szczecin (Poland), Faculty Of Chemical Engineering. From 2005 he is an academic lecturer and researcher at Kazimierz Wielki University in Bydgoszcz (UKW), Faculty of Natural Sciences. At present he is performing a function of Vice-Director of Institute of Experimental Biology (UKW) as well as head of Department of Biotechnology. He is an author and co-author of numerous publications in the field of white biotechnology (especially technology of the alcoholic fermentation) in national and international journals (BITE, EMT, JBB, JOFE ), speeches and announcements on conferences and patents. Reviewer in FUPROC, PRBI, BITE (Elsevier).

Research Interest : Grzegorz Kłosowski research interest include Optimization of bioethanol production technology from starchy raw materials (improvement of the ethanol productivity, costs reduction, energy saving). Improvement of the technological methods used for the enzymatic degradation of polysaccharides. Impact of raw materials contamination and quality on fermentation yield and formation of alcoholic fermentation volatile by-products (quality of raw spirit and alcoholic beverages). Screening and selection strategies of degrading cellulose filamentous fungi. Characterization, purification and concentration of cellulose degrading complexes of enzymes obtained from filamentous fungi.

Dr. Arbakariya B. Ariff is currently a Professor at the Department of Bioprocess Technology, Universiti Putra Malaysia. He was born in 9 September 1961. His field of specialization is Fermentation and Bioprocess Technology. Since 1987, he has involved with many research programmes and examples of them were; (a) Production of organic acids (kojic acid, lactic acid and citric acid) of enzymes (cellulase, glucoamylase, lipase, pullulanase, CGTase and α-amylase) by fermentation process using bacteria and fungus, wild and recombinant strain (b) Design of impellers for shear sensitive biological system such as plant cells and algae, (c) Biosorption of heavy metals by microbial biomass, (d) Isolation and characterization of microorganisms from petroleum reservoir, (e) Saccharification of lignocellulosic materials to fermentable sugars, (f) Large scale cultivation of probiotic microorganisms for human and aquaculture, (g) Direct fermentation of sago starch to solvent (acetone, butanol and ethanol) by C. acetobutylicum, (h) Optimization of bioprocess using statistical approach such as response surface methodology and aritificial neural network, and (i) Development of biomanufacturing process for production of pharmaceuticals such as interferon and epidermic growth factor. He is actively involves in postgraduate studies program. To date, more than 20 PhD and 51 MSc students have been graduated under his supervision. He has published more than 165 papers in refereed journal. His experience and expertise were sought after by the scientific communities and he was responsible in setting-up Fermentation Technology Unit, at Institute of Bioscience, Universiti Putra Malaysia in 1999, which involved in research and development, contract production and training.

She completed her M.Sc. in microbiology from Botany Department, Faculty of Science, Mansoura University, Egypt, 1993. She is presently employed as Researcher (assistant professor) in Bioprocess Development Department, City for Scientific Research and Technology Application, Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Research Institute, New Borg Al-Arab city, Alexandria, Egypt. She acts as a reviewer of the journal “Applied Biochemistry and Biotechnology”. Member of the "Egyptian Society of Applied Microbiology ". She is serving as an editorial board member for the Journal of Microbial & Biochemical Technology.

Research Interest : Dr. Noura El-Ahmady El-Naggar research interest include, Isolation and identification of bacteria belonging to Actinomycetes, the development of industrial process using different types of microorganisms. These include production of enzymes, organic acids, antibiotics, single cell oil and Bio-Fuel.
Extraction, purification and analysis of antibiotics produced by Actinomycetes,Purification of the enzymes and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis.
