Clelia Dispenza is the Chair of the BioNanomaterials and Composites Research Unit of the Dipartimento di Ingegneria Chimica, Informatica, Gestionale, Meccanica dell’Università degli Studi di Palermo, Italy, and Associate Researcher of the Istituto di Biofisica, UOS Palermo, Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, Italy. She received her Laurea (Hon.s) in Chemical Engineering from Palermo University, Italy in 1993 and a Ph.D. degree from the same University in 1997. Her PhD project was undertaken in collaboration with the Composite Science Research Group of ICI Materials, Wilton, UK.
Design, synthesis and characterisation of polymeric, composite and bio-hybrid materials. Different aspects of polymer science and technology have been considered, such as the development of strategies for the compatibilisation of immiscible polymers, or for the toughening of high performance epoxy resins as matrix of fibre composites and structural adhesives; the synthesis and evaluation of functional polymers, including polymeric surfactants, stimuli-responsive polymers and gels, conductive polymer nanoparticles and their composites and, more recently, mesoscopically-structured hydrogel-based photonic crystals, bio-hybrid gel nanoparticles and in-situ forming gels for drug delivery and as scaffolds for regenerative medicine. In her research activity, radiation chemistry and radiation processing have been often electively chosen as tools for the synthesis of novel, greener or more performing materials.
